I love the idea of using the word excited instead of nervous. In a dance audition, one girl started too early, and I will never forget how well she handled the situation. She quickly returned to her spot and said "Sorry, I was just so excited." Everyone laughed and she ended up making the team. Great attitude. Also, I think judgment, or worrying most about what people will think of me, is what makes me so nervous. So I love the idea of shifting the focus from me and what others will think of me, to them and what I can do to connect and help them. Great tips! Thank you so much!

Fabulous tips Riaz. The turning point for me was the aha that a speech is just a conversation with people I (usually) hadn't yet met. Thinking of it in that way released all the anxiety around the concept of giving a speech.

Thanks for the great tips! I find it helpful when I focus on one person in the room who seem to relate and support me when I am speaking, rather than looking around too much. I won't be staring at this person, but I find it powerful to feel that person's presence. I pick up small social cues, like a nod, or a soft facial expression, or something, and decide that this person likes my speech.

Excellent tips Riaz - much appreciated. I find as you said, that practicing out loud in front of friends and family totally helps with my confidence level. I have them ask me any questions that might be asked of me during an interview. I also love your comment on saying you're "excited" rather than nervous!. Thank you.
