why are some people so envious , it is his money and in a free society he can buy as many bananas or guitars as he wishes, he is taking a very good care of these fabulous instruments and even shares them with the public, thank you Mr. Gere

+TheMusicOfToday I heard Robbie Krieger of the Doors play a $100 Yamaha acoustic for "Love me two times babe" and it sounded phenomenal and proved that in most cases we don't need a multi thousand dollar guitar but why not have 1, or 50 Les Pauls like Slash? Who cares? Do I have to be Mario Andretti to own a Ferrari? That's just ignorant and malignant thinking!

When I was a kid, the Sears catalog had a Silvertone f-hole acoustic guitar with case for about $40. When I ask my dad if I could get it, he said we'll get you a "good" guitar. So he took me to Yeager's on Eastern Ave. The salesman took us upstairs to the stock room and sold my dad the worst POS guitar you could imagine. I eventually got the Silvertone which I loved. Fast forward a number of years, decided to give the Silvertone to my young kids. They destroyed it in about two days. Lesson learned: if you want to give your child one of your nice old guitars, wait until he/she is about 60 years old.

When they say "there is no right way to play guitar" I was at first thinking it was a bullshit statement. Of course there is a right way and a wrong way to play. I have had lessons at an early age and was all the time being corrected by my teacher. But as I grew older, I began to realize that as long as the notes come out and it sounds musical, he is right. There really is no wrong way to play. Like playing golf. If the ball goes far and straight, who cares what the swing looks like? Right?

+Charlie Foxtrot The 3rd... I liked your post because I am the same way but not . I had early guitar lessons and rebelled against every guitar teacher from 9 years old to about 15 ...I kept on teaching myself for many years until I decided was bottomed out and thought I needed professional direction. At 30 years old I found a guy who was 80 something years old and played in the big band era and took lessons again . For Gods sake he started me off with Mel Bay on first lesson ? So I told him next time I will come with my electric and amp and show his what Ive learned on my own . He told me after I played that " I think people would like to hear you play but you need to learn these things" ??? Things that made no sense to me. I just love to play the blues the way I love to play the blues and thats what makes me happy ...and thats what its all about .

+Charlie Foxtrot The 3rd and baler johnson .....I think lessons are useful for the majority to avoid wrong technique with no issue and spare time . You can dream and believe you can do it yourself .....but if the greatest (C.Christian ,Django,Wes,) were widely self taught ,they were first Musical genius ! .....and learn (easily) from a very accurate and "top" environment. Exceptions are aside the rule and are built to carry on ....before the first step! I never met good ones really and completly self-taught !

Ever notice how all these very wealthy collectors says "the guitar spoke to me" so I aquired the piece. You never hear,"man that 78 Japanese LP Cortez copy spoke to me". That MIM Strat really sung so I knew I had to have it. I am torn betreen 2 emotion when watching these vids. On one hand its great the guitars are being preserved and one day after a long custody battle or reading of the will they will end up back in other's hands. But on the other its sad to see what is essentially a guitar graveyard where they spend their lives in the dark. I have around 50 and display as many as possible and try to play each at least a few times a year.

I really love great guitars too. I've had up to maybe 10 or 12 in a collection but I always feel like that guitar is looking for a better home. I think that great guitars find great guitarist and vice versa. They shouldn't be coveted by people as pieces. They are alive in some way and have the capacity to create great music if they are free to.

One can totally understand the love of finding and collecting great guitars. The rich collect rare cars, paintings etc, etc and we all drool at their wealth and good fortune but there is something really sad about the idea of these instruments living in boxes and never being played by the owner who sought them out. They were made to be played often and the more you do the better they get.

The most interesting thing I think of when I look at my guitars is, where will they be after I pass? Who will hold them, and play them regularly just as I did? Today, "Vintage" guitars are usually only about 60 years or younger. I'm only 15 right now, but when I reach an old age, I am going to head down to a music store, find a kid with hunger, passion, and talent just as I have. And give him one of my guitars. It's better then money, knowing it is in good hands and is on another journey.
