Dear lord, Richard describing how many feel love really resonates with me. My experience exactly was along with how he describes watching porn at a early age and then not fully understanding why the idea of “love” is not working well with the other sex. Pretty flawed perception that is being created. I know several people that are single not wanting to date, I’ve been in that boat for a while because finding intimacy that feels authentic is difficult. Thank you for the interview! Great conversation.

Right around the 37 min mark, Richard takes on the idea of diagnosis and its limitations. This is an important segment for non-clinicians. Personality disorders are detectable from the second a person walks in the door, and you don't have to be a psychologist to fine tune that radar. The precise diagnostic criteria met in any particular case places the person in a useful category for other clinicians and for research purposes. On a related note, I would also argue that most of us contain some personality/character flaws that click off as criterion from these sets. The key there is to know what yours are, and how sever/maladaptive they are or have been in past relationships. The essential feature of a truly disordered personality disorder is egosyntonic drive (the problems are others, not you).

The experts are saying even they are fooled by the vulnerable narcissist-they can take time and be difficult to detect-and that’s one reason they are so toxic.

One of the huge problems with a lot of PhD or other higher degrees in psychology is that they have that flat scientific varnish and they are not allowed to use humour, laughter or to throw some self deprecating humour in. In order to look academic, they must remain stiff and unaffected by anything they hear. This stuff is great for poker or when you face an opponent after the weigh in in boxing but it is not natural. This where Richard shines. He obviously knows his stuff but he operates ouside of the academic trap. He pulls his knowledge from various areas as well.

Great guest! Richard is right, you can’t read a handful of articles and gain a true understanding of personality disorders. You can, however, experience a relationship with an individual with a personality disorder and between research and reading articles and that time you’ve experienced that relationship gain a pretty solid understanding of the traits and characteristics of personality disordered individuals in a sphere you experienced.

Interesting that you bring up Facebook, I was on it briefly for around 6 months around 2006 but simply found it an exercise in narcissism. I was convinced by my sister as my family lives on either sides of the USA and Canada as a way to "keep in touch"....I prefer phone calls. I do no social media except for LinkedIn with no pictures of me- and I use it strictly for business.

I asked Mr Vaknin . When can you diagnose someone with a personality disorder. Can you pinpoint a certain age. He said fifteen. I thought it would be atleast 25 to wait for the prefrontal cortex develop. Also he said specifically npd can be diagnosed at 25 but the others can be diagnosed much younger.Which I found interesting.

I've got a couple of questions & have no intention of triggering or upsetting anyone with my ignorance. How do you approach a new relationship after being subjected to a covert narc? Are you constantly worried that the new partner is also a covert narc that you have yet to unmask or is there a part of you that actually needs that torment in a relationship for it to feel legitimate now? I've noticed that people, usually women, will seek to replicate relationships where they have been treated very poorly ...aka, like shit.

I’ve noticed that females instantly throw the out the word “narc” like a buzzword battle cry nowadays. Here’s the heavy double standard: If a women ceases communication with a man, she’s empowered and is going “no contact” However, if a man ceases communication with a female, he’s a narc and is “discarding” her. 🤔

I've really enjoyed Richard over the years but the last year or so I've really noticed a leaning towards the British alt-right in his messaging. I've already been down that rabbit hole and I have no desire to head back. He's a good content creator sure, but everything is now with a pinch of salt unless I directly resonate to what he says. His self help channel has been awesome for me and I've worked hard on it for the last year, so I'm incredibly grateful for what he taught me in that regard. Great interview though, first time I've visited to this channel but it was a great interview, so thank you.
