The aftermath arc really did capture how devastating this news could be... i’ve read of stories of families that found out that one of their family members did some horrendous stuff it is crushing, embarrassing, they get harassed by the public and media but the truth is that most of us would never expect one of our loved ones capable of such things.

And sadly the character of Gail has since been reduced to a shadow of her former self. She is not a serious person at all and is used as a crap comic relief character whose behaviour is stupid and ridiculous in a weird way. Steve and Tracy McDonald and Dev Alahan are the same: overacted gormlessness and ridiculous "humour" that isn't that funny. It's as if they turn characters daft when they run out of ideas. To look at those characters today it's unbelievable that they have all, at one time or another, been major characters with serious, hard-hitting storylines. Who would see today's Tracy with her theatrical performances with Mary and bitchy remarks and remember she was a callous, calculated murderer? Or that Steve had ties to drugs gangs (Jez Quigley)? Or that dippy Gail, who today is the butt of ridicule of her family and pining after the latest in a line of soppy husbands (Les Dennis!) was married to a serial killer?

For some reason, part one of this storyline was the only video I could get to work. I thought, screw it. Richard was chilling in how cold he was, though it is shown that in the beginning he had a lot of guilt but as time went on he was too focused on his perfect life that he convicted himself anything he did was justified then he went nuts but always was cold and calculating even then... Richard for his duality and coldness and brutality was one of Corries most notorious and famous villains Pat phelan was a thug and always was, hardened by his time in prison, and a life of organized crime, so his villainy was more understandable because he was one of the few actual mafioso types that lived on the street I still Think Tony gordon comes close to Richard but different, Tony was not a thug like phelan, but he orchestrated his best mates death out of jealousy and spite for him sleeping with his girlfriend and then after Tony felt betrayed and that everything he could have had was done for he no longer cared who he hurt or killed not even himself.
@kaysmith8992

@@darrkksupernatural9782I think the closest we got to Richard was Carla's ex Tony in 2010. Richard and Tony shared a similar sterile, Darwinian view of people. Phelan was a nasty depraved brute but also had genuine personal affection for his family. For example if Phelan's grandson Zack had been born with a deformity/disease I think Phelan would still protect him whereas Richard/Tony would recommend putting the baby out of its misery. And of course Richard/Tony ended up killing themselves for Gail/Carla. Phelan would never have killed himself for any woman.

While Audrey was right about Richard being a psychopath, I get the feeling that when he returned and tried that murder-suicide pact he was genuinely unhinged. I can't really blame Gail for not believing Audrey though - Richard managed to convince everyone Audrey was senile. Even Archie didn't believe Audrey at first and thought she was paranoid. It was Audrey's persistence that convinced Archie and even then there wasn't enough evidence until he killed Maxine and tried to kill Emily. At least he wrote that confession saying Gail knew nothing . Even Pat Phelan stopped Summer getting in the car with that stranger despite all his other crimes.

Audrey did herself no favors when she was blatantly accusing Richard in public with no evidence other than her feelings that soured and ruined her credibility with Gail and a lot of people because of that and many refused to see it because they thought it was harassment gossip from Audrey Richard was very good at manipulation but he also had a genuine charm and seemed to have a good grasp of civility and sense when he interacted with others Just to point out to people, Ted buddy, John wayne Gacy and Jeffrey dahmer were notorious for being trustworthy types who were able to lure and trap their victims and they were seen and regarded by friends, family and neighbors as normal as you could be these kind of predators are very good at hiding in plain sight and pretending to be the sheep while sharpening their fangs and waiting for the right moment.

That scene with the engine running in the garage was the worst one - horrifiying! Well this is all the sign of an excellent actor: the guy who played Richard Hillman was one hell of a great villian - I'd say the greatest villain in Coronation Street of all time! That scene when Gail threw the ring into the canal - basically the "Good riddance!" expression. Excellent 🙂👍! Edit (31/10/20): I'm not sure where to make the request but seen as at least 1 person's gone to the trouble of recording both Richard Hillman and David Platt Storylines, can I request Michelle Connor storylines please 🙂? I ask as she is one amazing actress and I don't think I'm the only one who misses seeing her in Coronation Street. She has to be one of the most feisty Corrie woman ever! Just a thought 🙂. I'm surprised Gail, Sarah or David didn't whack on the handbrake when untied. Mind you knowing Hillman, he'd have prevented one of them.

1:47:05 - When Eileen & Norris were chatting about Richard's crimes, little did Eileen know that something similar was to come her way, 12 years on with Pat Phelan. I'd say both Hillman & Phelan were equally evil, I don't think you can say one was more evil than the other.
@mckenzie.latham91
@mckenzie.latham91 Жыл бұрын
Hillman's actions were as evil, but there was genuine moments where he still had regret and guilt over time he seemed to get over it but even then he confessed to Gail because part of him couldn’t handle the lies anymore when he returns he’s had a complete breakdown where he’s gone full on suicidal and thinks dying with his family is the only future for him Whereas Pat Phelan while having some good moments in his life, was never sorry, never had any regrets and or qualms about his deeds I can’t say Hillman was totally evil because there’s evidence where he still had moments of humanity over his crimes, and in the end he went totally insane from the stress and guilt and fear... Whereas I don't think Pat ever once had a moment of guilt or regret over anything he did.
@kaysmith8992
@kaysmith8992 Жыл бұрын
Phelan was depraved whereas Hillman was coldly warped. Phelan only used Eileen whereas Hillman was obsessively devoted to Gail. Phelan seemed to have enjoyed a good life whereas Hillman knew nothing but disappointment, only getting lucky very late in life. Phelan was proud to have a daughter while Hillman was ashamed of his sterility. Comparing with other villains, I think Phelan was more like Carla's rapist ex Frank while Hillman was more like Carla's suicidal ex Tony.
@Becksnnc
@Becksnnc Жыл бұрын
@@mckenzie.latham91 Richard never had guilt. Those moment where he looks like he's regretful is because his actions never gave him the outcome he wanted. Maxine died in vain and Emily survived the attack so he never got the money for her house. He did it for nothing and so he felt "guilt" because of that. If it had all gone to plan he wouldn't have cared about them and would have been happy since he got what he wanted.

Thank you so much for this huge edit of the Richard Hillman saga. Funny enough he was the one that got me into being a Coronation Street fan in the first place back in the early 2000s and as a kid I liked him because I love well written villains like him. But I only got into this storyline as a kid towards the end so thanks to you I've been able to see his entire story play out and just delve deep into Richard's killer. I find him quite tragic more than anything and still like him though. So it was a treat to see all of it including the aftermaths of Patricia and Maxine's deaths, Richard's confession and demise
@kaysmith8992
@kaysmith8992 Жыл бұрын
Same here, we're probably the same age. And I find him more tragic/pathetic now rewatching as an adult - I don't want to say he's more 'relatable' but his whole backstory / sob story about his parents and wives is easier to picture now. He was genuinely devoted to Gail and the kids but as Gail realised, he was only devoted to them as a concept.

@@donnieallemanni8572 They were popcorn thrills though. This whole storyline with Hillman was a slow burner, it built and built over a long period of time. He was the perfect psychopath but there was elements of something admirable about him, his behaviour had a purpose it wasnt just run of the mill murder there was a stor behind it. He killed to provide for his ready made family, a family hed coveted his whole adult life,, you cant excuse his actions but you can feel a little sorry for him to some degree. He was the perfect psychology treatment whereas Phelan/Maya etc were just pointless crackpots without no real backstory and their behaviojr and murders seemed utterly pointless. They and other soaps have never been able to top this storyline and are never likely to because they havent got the patience to let a story grow organically,, they dont seem to be able to get a character to slowly build but also they cant find the right actor with the charisma to play such a role,, they seem more interested in creating short term explosive storylines not the frog in a boiling pan types. Also the characters he killed had become fan favorites like Maxine, Dougie and the attempted murders of Emily and Audrey,, fans of the show were heavily invested in those characters.

If it was real it wouldn't matter. They'd all be dead. He drive into the canal at about 50 or 60 mph. The kids weren't belted and would be launched towards the front of the car. If not dead from the crash they be KO'd and drown.

@@imogenonscreen8054think of it realistically, Richard’s car was driving between 50-65mph, David and Sarah managed to break free while David and Richard fought over the steering wheel. When the car launched into the canal David and Sarah would’ve went straight through the windshield from the force. But they most likely put their seat belts back once David realised that Richard was about to drive head on into the canal.
