Hilda left due to a broken heart, she felt the world she knew, her Street, was becoming her prison. Instead of marrying Tom, she left to take care of Dr Lowther's broken heart and to escape hers. A bittersweet exit. And she never wore her turban and rollers after the attack....the old Hilda had gone.😢 We'll always love you ❤

I can understand why Hilda went to live at Dr Lowther’s. Perhaps Jean Alexander had not yet decided to leave Coronation Street when Tom proposed. I don’t know. After the attack, she admitted to needing to feel useful which was how she had been all her life. In marriage and work. Hilda needed to be needed. After the attack she was lost. A connection had been established with Dr Lowther after the fateful night of the burglary. A positive came from a negative. She would have her reason to get up everyday without being romantically involved, a roof over her head and some income. Proceeds from the house would have provided a nice little nest egg. Hilda was a one man woman which is is so refreshing to see in these modern times where morals leave a lot to be desired. It’s not easy to tune into Jenny’s silly problems in 1988 after saying goodbye.

I said practically said the same thing on another thread. I just wish it was an exit based on happiness rather than loneliness and fear after the attack.

So sad to see Hilda go, after just 23 years in the street; but at 2:16:04 - when she spills the beans on Bet living with Mike in earlier years, she tells Alec, "She lived with him at no. 3, you know, for quite some time." If they had, they'd have both been lodging with Emily Bishop. It was no. 5 Mike owned, before selling it to Ray and Deirdre Langton in 1977.
