It's not like he was intentionally comiting the crimes due to a well thought out philosophy, but rather having time to 1- stop using the drugs and dry out, and 2- have the time to truly contemplate his actions, the nature of his experience, and the nature of humanity in general. These two things need time to reflect upon- something incarceration provided him.
