I hope they keep it off the roads before some one is killed.These old failing machines should be restricted to museums where they are kept away from the potential hazards that the general public are unaware of.How many people realise these lethal machines have a potential of boiler explosion causing death & injury?...

Hang on a moment, it was a modern car that caused this not the roller (the car decided to pull out in front of it). This machine is very well maintained by all accounts. Plus they all have to pass regular tests on their boilers too.

i dont know man that looks about as bad as it gets short of killing someone. lol. not to insult your intelligence i promise thats not my intention. and obviously i wasnt there .but a roller losing its front wheel in a public road and then the boiler aims down running all the water off of the crown sheet. suffice it to say that can be a pretty bad time. now obviously there was a good crew on it to take care of it and in terms of the life of the equipment yes this was a short amount of time. at least it happened in Europe if this had happened in the USA half the country would have lost there minds about how dangerous steam engines are and would stand in the road protesting about it.

Engines like this usually have a fused plug made of lead between the fire box & boiler. If something like this happens and the water level is becomes dangerously low the fuse will melt before the boiler does and douse the fire in the process. Of course this can also be a problem when going down a steep gradient so a good crew will always check their water level first.

Was there any information as to what happened? Was it a crash, or did the front roller break loose due to metal fatigue? It is a shame to see such a nice machine in such condition.

doubleboost I rember driving that truck when it was operated by G Lashly in sussex, 50t/m PM crane, good lifter but slow!

This relic should be scrapped, cut apart, chipped up & sent to a foundry for melting!

That is the problem with today's generation. Something like this should be fixed not thrown away. We are all too eager to throw away what can be fixed and used again.

There is no historic significance in this trash bucket! If people want to see the ways of the past, books, films & photographs are all there to see. The wealth is in the machines of the future & this old bucket of bolts will do a lot to supply the materials to build the machines of the future. I am one of those who is eager to cut this old artifact apart & see it sent to a foundry for melting. And for me, to do so pays nicely! And I will pay to employ some people to do so. There is not one steam roller, steam locomotive, ship, truck, bus, car, tractor, farm implement, building or artifact that needs to be saved. Cut them everyone apart & send them to the foundry crucible! Then, "Charge the furnace!"

What about sentimental value? That machine has probably been in his family for ages.

The band brake works off one rear roll, the only way to do a controlled descent is skotching to place a big chock in front of one rear roll , the Late Great Fred Dibnah did that to slow and bring to a skidding stop his Aveling Roller, it worked.

Silver Line 69 when I got crushed under a tractor I asked the people filming to send me copies which they did and am glad there was someone filming as I had no recollection of what had happened.

It's extremely easy if you have smooth steel wheels, a steep hill, nothing but a handbrake on the rear wheels only that must be wound on with a wheel, & a selfish impatient car driver pulling out on you without warning, simply because saving 10 seconds of his waiting time is more important than other peoples lives. Years ago when I drove a tractor & trailer filled with 5 tons of soil, I was astonished how car drivers would accellerate to pull out in front on roundabouts to avoid waiting a few seconds for me to pass. Only the rear wheels on the tractor were braked, & even with rubber tyres, I had to get out of the seat & literally stand on the brake pedal to prevent the 20 mph 10 tons all up mass from killing them. Then later wondered why I bothered to save them.. The tractor belonged to the council.. & I wouldn't have gotten hurt in the impact, I would have just felt a large bump as they passed under the front wheels. lol
