I have done multiple experiments with this style, here's my most successful. Do not preheat. Also only top layer with aluminum sheet. Sandwich your book how you prefer, (I've had better luck with magazine backing boards top, middle and bottom) set 40 lb of pressure, and press, set temperature at 215f ( I know sounds crazy but yes) time for 500 seconds. Turn off machine and let cool completely in the press... the press sould be completely cooled off before removing the book from the Press. I've had many books with spine ticks that would surely bring down a grade that have completely and permanently come out with this temperature timing and pressure... give it a try?

@@ImmaculateComics yeah Rick just to clarify, I use magazine backing boards on the top cover to complete the sandwich both on the front and back as well in the middle Staples section. I also slip in a sheet of cannon Photo Paper Plus on the inside of the front and back cover, I find going thin on the inside of the cover usually can pull out some of these ticks better than a thicker board, and there's just something really unique about using a high-quality photo paper on the inside covers.

Great analysis Rick! You're attention to detail is awesome! One factor that I noticed when pressing that seldom gets mentioned is ambient humidity. I live in an arid climate where humidity is 5 to 8% so the moisture in the paper of my books is almost non-existent. I recently sent in a book to CGC which I pressed and they noted light creases which I'm 99% positive I removed. However, it did sit at CGC in Florida (higher humidity) for a few weeks before signing/grading and I wonder if that had something to do with the return of light creases. I'm fairly certain humidity can play a factor in reversion. I'm going to follow your lead on more "cold press" time.

I used to deliver new maple kitchen tables in Alberta which is dry. The tables were made in Quebec much more humid. They were solid wood pieces and glued to each other so a 100% of them after time in a customer's home would have to be picked up and sanded down flat again as they would warp and come unglued due to the change in climate so your assessment may very well be correct. So you have to humidify where your comics are stored maybe? But then do you get a problem of mold?

I use the same press as you do at 160 degrees. I press with the aluminum pressing boards you sell and after 10 minutes I take the book right out and put it between two of your cold presses for 10 minutes. The books come out great.

Great video Rick - I use Al plates on my hot press and generally allow 4-6 hours for cooling. However up until now I have not followed up with a cold press - but I will do now, as I have experienced reversion on some of my pressings.

Hi Mark, it appears a low pressure cold press may help to prevent reversion. but many people don't have capacity to leave the books in their press for a long time!

Alum stainless steel alloy like they make marine gas tanks out of I find makes the perfect balance of heat transfer and deformation
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
Which alloy is that? Did you record the the specific heat capacity or thermal conductivity of it? Also, what is 'deformation' and how do you measure it? "Perfect" is a hard place to get to and usually takes a lot of work and data so I am eager to learn how you got there. Tell all. inquiring minds want to know!
@MT-ub8qg

@@ImmaculateComics perfect is hyperbole. Deformation is how plate warps when heated. Plate never has even heat distribution and found some thinner steel plates can warp with edges cooler than center. Also known as elasticity
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
@@MT-ub8qg I see, thanks. I work in the metals industry in oil and gas and automotive so we use different terms and it's good to get centered with observations of others. I have a tool called an Instron extensometer and other various fatigue and pressure plate tools. I've measured hundreds (and possibly thousands) of materials and test samples over the years for the elastic modulus and young's modulus at different temperatures and when vibrated. So when someone tells me they've found a new "perfect" material my ears perk up and I get excited to water-jet a cut a piece of it for testing!! Forgive my over-eagerness to learn more!

@@ImmaculateComics Deformation specifically comes from structural steel in buildings. How a structural member "deforms" under the stresses of force or temperature. Ex many I beam connections allow for movement due to expansion and contraction from temperature swings or wind loads causing building movement. also how an I-beam may sag under too much shear force or integrity reaction to a fire in the building....

Ive been doing two books a day and heres what I do and wondering what you think about it. Basically I do a book in the morning and leave it all day in the press to cool as I go to work and then throw another in when I get home from work and leave it in there until the morning. Rinse. Repeat. Probably leaving them in the press (using two of your aluminum boards) 8+hrs each in the press. Edit: Each book also gets a 25sec steam (10sec each side and 5sec concentrated on the spine from 10-12" away from steamer)
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
This sounds ideal really and I admire your perseverance. One book appears to get a longer dwell time than the other. do you notice any differences over many books? I find that a long cold press under lower press helps to prevent wavies and reversion, even thought its counterintuitive. I don't have hard data on that, its just a pragmatic observation so far.

@@ImmaculateComics Havent really noticed any differences between books. That amount of time left in the press I think is overkill as Ive taken some out at 5hrs on my days off and saw really no difference between longer times. Just how they fall on my work days. Otherwise, pull them out, lay them on the work surface to check and make sure they lay flat and then bag/board them. Daredevil 131 was the only book out of about 30 or so to give me problems. One corner of the cover kept lifting regardless of what I did even with the water trick I believe I saw in one of your videos. In the end I ended up just carefully manually rolling it back in the opposite direction until flat and then just used one of your cold press boards on it for a few days. I have a stack that Im eventually sending out and will pull them out to give them a once over before departure and will see if anything came back or not. Especially on the pesky daredevil.

For the cold press, do you add any weight on top of the acrylic? Either in the middle like a tiny dumbbell or to the 4 corners?

Another insightful vid Rick! You could do a job for Stark Tech running their applied sciences lab!! (Your equations hurt my brain😄) 5hrs looks like the golden number. Id usually heat press a book and leave for work so it has 8 hours cooled in the press. Then do a cold press although I do need to get your elite cold press board👍🏻When you heat press doyou use 1 chamfered board? Or do you also have 1 jammed in at the back cover aswell? What would the best material be for this purpose aluminum, steel or copper? I realize copper is about twice the expense but I have rewards points I can use at Home Depot and get them for free. I'm guessing the metal that retains heat the longest is best?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 11 ай бұрын
Yeah you really want to balance heat of conductivity with specific hear capacity too. Also you don't want it to oxidize at high temperature as copper will. I choose aluminum as a good balance although it scratches and mars easily.

So what I basically took away from this is that about 2.5 hours in the press and then cold press for x amount of time? 12 to 24 hours? Is that about ball park average?

Hi Rick. Instead of using aluminum I’ve been using stainless steel plates. Heavier and they retain the heat longer and I will leave it in the press usually about 12 hours before moving it to a cold press. What are your thoughts on this it seems to be fairly successful for me but I don’t know if the additional expense of the stainless steel plates is worth it
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry, I have a video on materials selection. 316 SS has a lot of structural advantages over Al but Al has a higher specific heat capacity and a higher thermal conductivity than steel per the same mass. Al does scratch easier, however. Of course if you buy enough of a mass of steel it will have a higher heat capacity. If you were to buy very thick steel it would work well, but you’d also need to get it laser cut and polished and have the edges deburred. All of which is more expensive on that material. I actually have some steel plates too, bath prefer my Aluminum ones because they are easier to work with and because I can repolish them easily if they get a scratch or dent!
@berardoferrari

@@ImmaculateComics why worry if the plate is scratched or dented, since its not in direct contact with the comic book ?

@@berardoferrari Its a good question and it doesn't matter to me at all. However this group of hobbyists can include some people who are exceptionally sensitive to appearance over function. I have more than one person who is worried about this any ink or stickers on an Aluminum pressing board making it thicker in one area over another. Makes no sense to me but since the question is asked, I answer it.
