Batman 60s--False-Face Unmasked!-- His FACE & Secrets, and TRUE Thoughts Revealed! Who was He?
The villain False-Face in the 60's Batman TV show only appeared for one episode story. Why? There was a VERY specific reason...most in part to the actor himself. This fascinating story will unmask the character and tell you the actor's true thoughts on what took place on set. You won't want to miss it Bat-fans.

@ANDREW Ashmore He totally creeped me out as a kid. Who was he..where was he, when will he appear and what crime was he going to commit? Which character in the episode will l he reveal his himself to be? He could have been anyware. A walking endless and unsolvable riddle. I had nightmares after seeing that episode and everytime after I saw that episode repeated! Lol 50 years later that mask, and the evil lurking underneath it, still creeps me out. A face that is there and not there. In the heist film 'The Friends of Eddie Coyle', starring Robert Meichim, the bank robbers used that same False Face mask in both the 1st heist scene that corresponded in real time to the hostage scene. I was traumatized all over again as a teenager! Lol...

Great video! I learned a lot! I remember seeing False Face on the show and his physical appearance was very disturbing to me because of his lifeless, emotionless and often shiny plastic masks. But also in my opinion, as a result of the masks, False Face stood out among the other villains because he was more of a threat and not just a cartoon joke. Awesome work Rick! Thank you.

I remember Malachi Throne most for his role as Noah Bain on It Takes a Thief. The series featured the adventures of cat burglar, pickpocket, and thief Alexander Mundy, who steals to finance his life as a polished playboy and sophisticate. He is in prison when the U.S. government's SIA (the fictional Secret Intelligence Agency) proposes a deal to Mundy: steal for the government in exchange for his freedom. Mundy is puzzled and asks, "Let me get this straight. You want me to steal?" In the main opening titles, his new SIA boss, Noah Bain, uses the catch phrase, "Oh, look, Al, I'm not asking you to spy. I'm just asking you to steal."

False Face was one of my favorite Batman villains. I always thought the creepy plastic mask added to the appeal. The original idea was to use Two-Face as the villain but the network mixed that idea, thus they used False Face. Eventually, Two-Face was scheduled to be the first villain of Season 4, with Clint Eastwood signed to play him. But, the show got canceled and we were denied this awesomeness.

According to Adam West's book, "Back to the Batcave", executive producer William Dozier was a big fan of a 1963 movie "The List of Adrian Messenger" in which major stars were covered with makeup so that it left the audience playing "Guess Who" as to who it really was. Dozier decided to use that approach for the False Face episode putting in the "?" where Malachi's name would have been.

False face is my favorite villain in the 60s Batman. I watched these on VHS with my Mom waaaaaay back when. And I never forgot this villain and his incredible antics. Obviously this isn't the best to watch today....but the clever way they filmed these and his incredible masks make this an amazing portrayal. I've been searching for his mask or a prop so I can finally live my dream to cosplay FF. So far.. no luck. One of my favorite scenes is the subway when he's in the vending machine smiling and laughing in his suit. But the opening...is the best. FF with a false beard on his False face. So good.

I remember being puzzled by the '?' credit for him, and I remember seeing 'Malachi Throne' at the end of Part 2, as you said. ABC ran THE KROFFT SUPERSHOW from 1976 to 1978, and its 1st season had a segment called "ElectraWoman & DynaGirl", which was like a female version of BATMAN. This segment had 8 2-part episodes over its 16 overall episodes, and Malachi Throne played 1 of the villains for an episode. His character was called Ali Baba, and he had a henchman known as The Genie. Mr. Throne was the only actor to play villains on both BATMAN and its copy 10 years later.

I always felt this was one of the better original _Batman_ TV episodes. A little darker, a little grittier - and for a kid watching in the 1960s, a little scarier - but it definitely made an impression on me. I know this is not what the producers of the show wanted, and it's probably the reason why we never got another episode like _False-Face._ It wasn't until _Batman Begins_ did we see a gritty, scary Batman story on film again.

Malachi, old school actor with INTEGRITY! He cared about every aspect of the finished product as much as he did his performance and wouldn't add his name to something that he believed to be less than. That is truly impressive considering he's NOT a household name. While he was clearly working a lot of the time, he could just as easily NOT be yet the idea of being attached to a subpar performance was greater than getting an onscreen Credit

From what I understand, the creation of False Face came about because the producers originally wanted to use Two Face as a villain. But because of the gruesome make up job that would be needed for the character, False Face was created as a less scary/more funny alternative. I also notice that at least two masks were use, one smiling, the other scolding. This allowed the character to express different emotions. And as you can see, the give him different hair styles. Personally, I thought that Malachi Throne did a good job in the role and that False Face should have returned for another battle with Batman...

As a kid, I liked things that were just a little scary and False Face fits the bill in spades. Never getting to see his face and the question mark in the credits made it even cooler. Having just one pair of episodes for him made him more special. As I recall, they had some spooky music that did not get used much outside of that episode. The truly scary moments in Batman were pretty rare - Robin getting swallowed by a giant clam while Batman was in chains seemed pretty hopeless. I was very young when Batman was in its original run and to the kids watching then, there was nothing campy about it. We liked the scary bad guys (Mr. Freeze, Frank Gorshin's Riddler, Eartha Kitt's Cat Woman) and were not nearly as enthralled with some of the milder villains (Bookworm, Marsh Queen of Diamonds, King Tut, etc.) that didn't seem dangerous at all - why would someone as important as Batman need to help the police for people like that? False Face was not funny but he was the kind of cool that appealed to kids who were too young to write letters to networks and TV stations.

Great character. Very suspenseful and no telling what or who he would look like. I had no issues with False Face except for no more episodes with him. At least one more episode would've been great.

I KNEW it was Malachi Throne! (From, It Takes a Thief). False Face, along with The Mad Hatter (David Wayne) were just two of the scariest Batman villains! The Bookworm (Roddy McDowell) scared me, too. Cesar Romero as the Joker was always a terrifying presence. Mr. Freeze, whether it was Otto Preminger (the German film Director) or George Sanders (a little LESS scary) always freaked me out, as well. Vincent Price as Egghead is priceless! What a performance! The most perilous event I can recall as a 6 year old kid was when the Mad Hatter confined both Batman and Robin in plaster! I was mortified over this and didn't even sleep that night until the resolution came on the next night after. I think they both rocked themselves forwards and backwards until they both fell over and the plaster broke around their bodies. Back then, I was CERTAIN that they would suffocate! These was some scary scenarios for a 6 year old kid addicted to the show which was broadcast on Tuesday and Wednesday nights on ABC, back in the mid 1960's. As an even younger kid in the early 60's, I was traumatized by watching the black-and-white series, The Outer Limits, also broadcast on the ABC network! We ONLY had 3 Channels at the time! NBC, CBS and ABC and that was IT! Looking back, it's amazing that we had the variety of content that was only ever filtered out to 3 national networks! I realize that Millenials will never grasp this concept, but that was ALL that we had, back then! And IT ALL WORKED, beautifully! Thankfully, my Dad was a television repairman who knew his shit and we were the first household on our cul-du-sac that had a big color television. Our neighbors would come over in the Summer to watch shows on our Color TV! They were all jealous. This was all like 55 years ago.....

I cant remember why, but for some reason I missed part 2 of that, it drove me crazy. At school I asked a kid how they got out of it, when he told me I wasnt sure if I believed him or not (this is the plaster episode)

As always, thank you for a great video full of facts and history which I always enjoy and thank you for your hard work and effort. I remember watching this episode in reruns as a kid and thought it really didn't fit in with the show overall but its still an interesting idea to explore.

I grew up watching "Batman" and saw most of the episodes two or three times over in reruns, but this one I only vaguely remember. As for the actor, wanting to appear on the show to advance his career, sadly that backfired because he was cast in a role in which no one would see his real face! That's not a very good way to make yourself more well known.

Amazing that by just wearing a clear plastic mask it makes it impossible to identify who the person is.

"False Face" was a VERY different member of the rogue's gallery of this show. Even as a kid I was kinda creeped out by the mask. But when I look at it now, this villain gave as good as he got...thru both episodes. Green Hornet and Kato would even have trouble with this guy.

I remember this episode from my childhood. It was really frightening. I always thought that the character was horribly burned under the mask.

The premise of the character reminds me of the Vincent Price movie "Dr. Phebes". If you don't remember that movie, look it up. The main character was a surgeon who lost his wife in a car accident and was severely burned in it. He than seeks revenge on people he held responsible for her death, while going through the process of trying to bring her back to life. I believe this is actually two movies, with the same character.

I first saw this episode on a weeknight in 1987 at my job at Zayre in Natick,MA but it was only brief because of a 15min.break.The Truck driving scene is what I recall best with False face at the steering wheel.

He did star in that Hogan's Heroes episode as well as the original Star Trek: "The Cage" and Star Trek: Next Generation, "Unification." I liked this Batman episode. I had heard his face was scarred in a fire so he had to have the mask. It reminded me of Dr. Phibes.
