I went on Sunday with a friend and his two kids. Got to give it to Phil Mickelson, he loved my friends daughters high flyers shirt and when he finished his round came over and asked her a bunch of questions. Ended up giving her his worn glove signed, as well as signing her shirt, getting a photo and also ended up giving both kids a ball each. For a guy worth the amount of money that he has, he didn’t have to do all that, but showed real class in doing so

I think you missed a big plus -- all the players are in the same conditions playing at the same time. No one is advantaged because they had an early tee time when the wind was light and the greens were soft or disadvantaged by a late time when the wind was howling and the greens were hard -- IMO.

I thought the music would be super annoying, but when I was there i actually enjoyed it. It adds to the atmosphere. Infact the 8 of us that went really really enjoyed the day. We didn't find the gaps between players an issue at all, but we followed groups around and would switch to another group on adjacent holes. My take away was: it's heaps better live than on TV. I personally enjoyed it more than all the DP/Euro tour events I've been to. Atmosphere was on par with a sunday at the last open I attended.. but more relaxed. I'd definitely go again as the golf was bloody great (which is why we all go to events in the first place)👍

I went to LIV on Sunday General Admission ticket. It was really busy. While there weren't any general public grandstands around the course there was a small one behind the 1st tee that I went on. Also there was quite a large general public grandstand behind the 18th that I got onto no problem to see the last 5 or 6 groups come through. Loved the music, and general chilled out atmosphere. I walked the course backwards so saw all the players and then got a space in the granstand on 18. Only complaint- not enough food stalls. The queues for the food were crazy long.

In regards to the experience of general admission fans, I went to LIV DC and the access I got to players both at the driving range and along the course was incredible. I had been to 2 PGA events in years prior, one a FedEx Cup playoff, and the access and experience I had at LIV blew those out of the water. I suppose player access depends on the course you attend but I can say for sure that LIV DC was the closest I ever got to players.

A lot of the negatives you mentioned were based on the space available at Centurion, we didn’t have that issue at Adelaide so the venue seems to have the biggest bearing on that. You nailed the atmosphere vibe: it’s as much a a party as it is a major golf event. It’s a lot of fun

I found taking a device with you where you can follow the action on KZfaq helped you keep track of the score. Maybe take a 4G or 5G capable tablet with plenty of battery helped you keep track of all the players and scores on the day. Mobile reception is generally pretty good at Centurion. Generally a really fun event. The only negative for me was getting out of the carpark on the Sunday which was really chaotic and took about an hour to get out due to lack of organisation. It's interesting, the whole 'it doesn't mean anything and you're not invested in a particular team' narrative, and I can understand that from a US or UK perspective. As an Australian, it's very easy to be invested in Ripper GC as it's the Aussie team. As for the tournament not meaning anything, I do agree. You could make an argument that the John Deere Classic doesn't mean anything either, other than players trying to qualify for majors. And therein lies the problem, ranking points and qualification for majors is needed to elevate LIV to have greater meaning. What comes next with LIV and PGA Tour is going to be fascinating

A great listen/watch. LIV is growing the game and opening the sport to new markets. No point pitching golf to the traditionalists who’ve been to 20-30+ Opens and won’t be with us in 20 years. Outside of the tradition of the majors, it’s largely about entertainment going forward. Your best point was about the shortage of players. Definitely felt this when on course at Adelaide. Solution would appear to be 64 players - sixteen teams of four which would fit comfortably onto the course and eliminate the awkward gaps in play. Two separate shotgun starts (morning and afternoon groups) would defeat the purpose of having all players experiencing the same conditions at the same time.

My son and I was there on Friday, thanks for the pic Rick. You summed up LIV perfectly here, it felt a little weird to us, much different to the Belfry the week before. But enjoyed seeing some top players that only play the open. Got lots of pics of my son with big names, just disappointed DJ disappeared after playing, but a fist pump on the 1st tee was appreciated. Also a big negative for us, Phil was very evasive at the end and desperately avoided photos and autographs from a lot of fans, obviously need to wear his merchandise to get noticed. Top marks to all the other players for taking time to pose for photos and sign autographs for many of us. Glad you enjoyed and gave others an honest opinion of your day out.

Rick, that was a fantastic assessment of the tournament. Only thing I think you’re missing on is from the perspective of a fan who has been watching now for a year. Personally, I think it does mean something as to who wins and I think the teams are more involved and excited than you may think. But I understand how it may only appear that the four or five top teams who are actually in contention for into the whole team aspect of things. Otherwise I 100% agree with you. And thank you.

Rick, I think you lost perspective talking about general admission experience verses hospitality, that's the whole point of investing in hospitality. General admission for this event was about £36. Compare that to the F1 or Wimbledon. I think we should be applauding the fact that they are making it accessible and fans get up close to the players. Another petty comment was the scoring. Is it really any harder to understand than any other golf tournament where you would likely be also watching on a phone, lets not forget LIV+ is free to watch and live. If you are going to review the LIV experience, try and remain impartial, that way it will come across far more credible.

Also agree, I think Rick feels that way because he hasn’t been invested in it.. Hello Rick. This may be lengthy so please forgive me at the start. As you were describing your experience at the LIV Golf event in London I was struck at how much it was not just a tournament, but an exhibition of golf very similar to a tournament held in Oregon from 1986-2002. The tournament was the Fred Meyer Challenge put on by Peter Jacobsen aka Peter’s Party. Like LIV they drew a field of both top notched golfers of the day (Payne Stewart, Davis Love III, Sir Nick Faldo, Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, Greg Norman, Brad Faxon, Phil Mickelson, John Daly, David Duval, etc. etc.) They also brought in some of the O.G.s Chi Chi Rodriguez, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, and Arnold Palmer. There was also a pro-am to start the first day (Glenn Frey, Huey Lewis, Hootie and the Blowfish, Kevin Bacon, etc.) It was a three day event, the first day being the Pro-Am. The second day was the tournament itself. This like LIV was a team event, but only a team of two golfers playing best ball. There was a fan village, a concert at the end (Hootie and the Blowfish played one year, but there was always a top notch performer for the concert every year) And toward the end of each day you could hear music playing throughout the course. Also like LIV, you could get up very close and hear the conversations and stories, not only between the caddies and players, but the players themselves. The spectators were so close that we could, on occasion, interact with the players as well. One of my fondest memories is of a small child, maybe 8 or 10 years old, looking up at Fred Couples as he was about to tee off on the fourth hole and ask loudly “Are you a professional golfer?” And watching the whole crowd erupt in laughter. Freddie laughed and then proceeded to hit a wonderful tee shot. The one thing the Fred Meyer Challenge had was a clinic at the start of each day of the tournament, where there were demonstrations and instructions by the professionals, ending with Peter’s impressions of some of the golfers and their swings. So many great memories. Like the LIV golf event you attended and the Fred Meyer Challenge, there was no shortage of great golf, and the fan experience was great, and while we pulled for our favorite golfers and their team, it was not the same feeling as during any of the regular PGA or LPGA Tour and even USGA events I have attended. Those events seem to have a gravity to them that does not lend itself to light banter, or casual focus of either the players or spectators. I think both have a place in golf, and I would like to see more of the Fred Meyer type events held. That said, given the choice of which would I would like to have as a regular diet of golf viewing, I would take the meat offered by the PGA, LPGA, DP World Tour. A link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Meyer_Challenge

Interesting observations, some I support some are just timing of one day/one tournament. I have been to 3 Bangkok, Adelaide and Singapore. I also go to traditional golf tournaments or the eaten out shell of these events PGAT left we Australians. You went to an odd day of team play where the players were together, I don't think this works as well as normal mixed days. That said there are teams that are massively and I mean massively in sync, inc the Aussies, the SouthAfricans, the 4 Aces, The LATAM boys, the spanish Fireballs, The Majesticks, and range goats. To be fair they are the ones with the big personalities and real team leaders. And that is the tough part to star in LIV the players have to have personality to give in a crowd that is a more active part of the event (and not just a loud mouth American screaming get in the hole on a par 5). I think it will evolve to either 54 players or 72. I think the lesser 15-20 players currently will be paid out and return to the tour. But the concept will thrive and it will be a defacto global tour. Not replacing majors or Players but being a vehicle to grow the game globally, much as 20/20 cricket has done. There will always be a place for the traditional thermos drinking oldies and the anoraks at the masters, but golf has denied the best players to 95% of the world. PGAT as an American audience corralled the best of the best with money and OWGR points, Europe was reduced to the Open, a couple of Rolex events (often as warms up to the open) and the Ryder Cup every 4 years. LIV will I think evolve into 10-12 events a year, spread over more of the year to take advantage of climate vs the congested European summer, the team will increasingly be country and region specific, and will give a boost to golf federations that were drained by the PGAT. I.e. Sunshine tour, for us in ANZ, the Asian tour etc (it will means some players can stay on and play local events to support these tours as Cam and Co did over christmas this year. With consistent events and well selected venues the tournaments will grow, but I agree they need naming rights sponsors rather than being exact replicas of each other (the organisation is very good, but they need some personality as venues and events, which the fans are already doing the crowd in Oz passionate as was Spain, all be it they were consistent to country). At the end of the day I have always done general admission, in Singapore and Thailand that got you awesome spots everywhere in front of the elevated seats, in Adelaide because of the bigger crowd there was more segregation, but general admission tickets are more like 1990's prices so you cannot complain. Driving range and the like are a function of the size of the venue. People need to see LIV/PIF as an addition to the sport not competition to the existing. I do think however like 20/20, fans will vote with their feet and wallets, and the team part and the merch sells out everywhere, I think the majors, Players and some of the other big events are safe, but LIV with more big name players, tighter teams and a fair crack at TV networks, will make a lot of the current PGAT/DP tours clear second string events, given it is shared newco that should help keep the PGAT well funded. The big names will certainly be the winners in the new world, but with that will come the need for personalities, not sure the Justin Thomas's of this world or even Rory will do as well Phil and Bubba in the media scrum. Golf like F1 is morphing from a sport only to a social media product where the personalities become as critical as the stopping power of a 6 iron........... There is a lot of cirque du soleil in the LIV product and it works.

Interesting to hear how it was in London. Adelaide had all the pros but only really two of the negatives: need more players and some of the teams don't seem to be fully in the team spirit yet. I can see the meaning thing as well, but that wasn't a big thing for me and it will come over time. Most of the negatives at London that weren't at Adelaide seem to be related to space and facilities. Lots of space in Adelaide, lots of hospitality, GA areas, good options, etc. Will be interesting to see what happens with Liv, I really hope they are smart with it and turn it into the F1 of golf!

I was lucky enough to attend LIV Tulsa and it was awesome. I did splurge on the club 54 which was expensive, but in my opinion worth it. Atmosphere was amazing. The DJ never let the vibe get boring. I've said id love to see LIV incorporate all 4 golfers for the team events. A salary cap if you will, then to add another golfer per team as a "Wildcard" amateur that plays on Thursday for their draft. Top 12 players receive a draft and captains pick player in order from their result in the last team standings. 4Aces pick first of the 12, Ripper then 2nd and Stingers 3rd. That would then make the teams standing "mean something". This would also mean the wildcard entrant score could become a part of the teams, and take a pay check from it.

As a past member at Firestone G&CC in Akron, Ohio I heard the following story. Phil was a frequent attendee at the World Golf Event - NEC Invitational held at Firestone. However, one year he could not play in the event; but, still sent a $1,000. cheque as a tip to the locker room staff! Very thoughtful.

Took the young lad on Friday. His 1st pro golf tournament, my 1st since the mid 1980's when I went to the Car Care Plan Invitational at Moortown - when the likes of Torrance, Woosnam, Faldo, Langer, Lyle and other fantastic golfers were still playing plenty of golf outside of America - and that is why I bought into the LIV project - I am sick of seeing all the best players being sucked up by the money the PGAT has offered, to very much confine them to US based tournaments - at the expense of golf fans across the globe. Centurion far exceeded my expectations - crowd was good, seeing so many world renowned players often just a few feet from us was incredible - the youth fist bumped pretty much all of them as they left the 14th green and Sergio even stopped and threw him a signed ball when he told him to "Jugar Bien" - memories that will last him a lifetime. The feeling I got as I walked round is "this is going to grow into something exciting". The product is funky, the music out on the course was great - just adding a nice vibe as we watched the players. Even got to see Rick himself as he chatted to Pete Cowen outside the Majesticks tent, and was hoping to get a photo of him with the youth but he looked busy and the chance never came - next time Rick 👍

Went to the Liv London event on the Saturday, and despite the weather had a great day! First live golf event and even non golfers came with us and had an amazing time. Plonked ourselves on hole 3, about 5 foot from the pin, saw everyone and it was top class. Would 100% go again. Just wish the cost of food and drinks was lower! £9 for a pint! Worst bit of the day, although didn’t stop me enjoying the day!

I just went to the LIV event at the Greenbrier here in West Virginia. I really enjoyed it. Loved the shotgun start..we followed 5 groups around the whole day. We saw all the players we were excited about and saw them play par 3s as well as them hitting drivers. Dechambeau is impressive with a driver in his hands, when he hits the ball it just sounds different. I thought the music was actually pretty cool..the atmosphere could not have been more different than the pga events ive been to. Overall i enjoyed the day and would def go again.

Winning on the PGA Tour actually has some merit to it, especially the bigger tournaments. LIV really does feel like an exhibition tournament. Guys on the PGA Tour have had to graft their asses off to be on it and to win an event feels like they are rewarded. Guys on LIV have just been given it on a plate essentially.

One huge reason as to why i watch liv (and even attended live on the sunday) is that it is free to watch on the app and often on KZfaq. As a newer fan of golf, having only played for around 2 years, i simply cannot justify spending around £40 a month to watch pga events. Paying £500 a year to watch golf when i can literally turn on KZfaq and watch some very high calibre players just seems ludicrous to me. Equally i can understand the opinion of those who watch pga and dont blame then for watching it, I just think those who mock people watching Liv have to understand some fans do not want to pay a £500 annual fee to watch golf when there is a free alternative.

Good summary, LIV obviously appeals to both Sports fans and Golf fans... two very different animals. I simply cannot stand idiots shouting and screaming in tournament golf ... LIV is now their natural habitat. I’m glad it works for those that both want to watch golf and are prepared to hoof it round the course and see their favourite players and also the weekend sport fans who want to shout , drink and party. So LIV is providing entertainment for all and that’s a good thing. Shortly we will have The Open, and back to cathedral quietness over the shots and respectful applause after a good shot. Ideally hope the hospitality loving loudmouths stay in their tents and allow golf fans to enjoy the The Open in peace.

I have seen gaps of play at normal PGA tour stops. Also, when they have a large field, over half of the field you are not familiar with. Plus to your point Rick, to see 120 players, you have to spend the entire day at the tournament. Long day. I think the concept of LIV is a better viewing atmosphere to see the players you care to see.

I thought you had excellent analysis. I am 73 and went to LIV Tulsa, also on Friday. I was General Admission so experienced a lot of the things you talked about. I went straight to the driving range so I was able to pick my spot behind Bubba’s sign with a good vantage point for warm ups. I feel the atmosphere is aimed at the much younger than me crowd. I love golf and have no problem with their end purpose. My purpose was entertainment. I attended the PGA and do agree it had a completely different atmosphere but being a volunteer I had much more access. Once again you were spot on with both Positives and Negatives and definitely fair. Thanks! 37:42

I’m a golfer who wants to go out and be paired with others who take the game seriously, have light chat between shots and holes, hit bad shots and continue on quizzically, etc. when I get paired with folks who play music, have a beer every green, hit bad shots and laugh or joke excessively, have no pre shot routine, etc. It’s off putting. It feels like there’s a crowd looking for entertainment and a crowd looking to admire the game and understand how the pros do it. For me, the first is liv, the latter is the pga.

I love the shotgun starts and agree that it makes the time spent viewing much easier and more convenient. As far as the "viewing" convenience and experience, that would change from venue to venue. Some clubs would offer (or have available) more room for fans to see the range and certain holes. Living in Hawaii, I've been to (and volunteered at) the Sony Open, the Champions Tour event at Hualalai and the LPGA Cup Noodle tournament at both Kapolei GC and Ko'Olina GC and it's very easy to watch the pros on the range and on most holes on the course, and especially, coming up the 18th hole.

As you said you've been on many major tournaments. When LIV in Valderrama was the only option I may have in my life to be near DJ, Bryson, and many others. When DPH was coming the field was so poor. I have been to both LIV London events and really enjoyed them. Admittedly I haven't been to a more traditional tournament, but I find this format more appealing. The shotgun start is great. Can turn up at a reasonable time without missing any golf. And 4-5 hours of play is enough, I would not want to be on the course from dawn till dusk. Sure there could be a few more players but I didn't' see this as much of an issue. What stood out more was the strong field of players that were there.
@WildElroy13

If they were to add more players, then they may need to have cut line and would last all day long. As of now LIV has no cut line and they only play for about 4-5 hours. Also they couldn't have the shotgun start with more players. So, they are back to the PGA format of play, which is long and boring.

@@WildElroy13 You can fit a lot of players into a shotgun start. we just had a tournament with a four man scramble with 120 guys. In a pro LIV event you could put two groups on the par 5s or if it is a par 5 to a par 3. you could stick two groups on the par 3, a and b. Since there are 4 guys to a team and 3 per group. You could easily add 3 more teams and 12 players. That makes it 60 players which I think is perfect. One issue with this is the driving range and practice green for 60 guys. Any more becomes a logistical nightmare
@WildElroy13
@WildElroy13 Жыл бұрын
@@philtookgrenadesforme7785 what do you mean, 60 players total or 60 more players? If they have a four some on each green right now, that's 72 players. You can't put more than 4 players per hole on a shotgun start. It won't work, no matter what you think. They will still be standing and waiting for the fairway/ greens to clear so they can play. This would cause a lot of delays and back ups.
@philtookgrenadesforme7785
@philtookgrenadesforme7785 Жыл бұрын
@@WildElroy13 No, just 3 more teams. That stops the gaps in play. My point is, every weekend there are shotgun tournaments with120+ guys on 18 holes. A&B groups. You still finish in 5 hours to 5 hrs and 30 min or so. Logistically, that many will be a problem at a pro event on the range and putting green.

I could make the same case you made on your last point but about PGA Tour events. I absolutely didn’t care who won the John Deere classic. The only reason I cared about the Rocket Mortgage was because Rickie was in contention. What gives meaning to any golf event that isn’t a major? Sure, there are a few like The Players, maybe the Memorial and Arnold Palmer Invitational. What gives it meaning to me is the quality of golf. The great putts, the sand saves, etc.
