As I'm learning more about the Ricoh Theta Z1 I find myself liking this 360 camera more and more. In today's video we'll setup a a 360 Panorama shot with the Theta Z1's Multi Bracketing Mode. We'll take 5 brackets and then import them into Lightroom. We'll use Lightroom to merge the 5 brackets to HDR, and then export the HDR to PTGui for stitching the 360 photo.
Clearly I'm only scratching the surface of all that the Theta Z1 can do. And this simple workflow is only the beginning for custom setups to produce quality HDR 360 degree panos.

I'm actually working on a full class on 360 photos with the Theta Z1. I'm building the class on Teachable and it should be available by the end of February. The class will focus on the still 360 photos, and not on the video applications of the Z1. Keep an eye on this channel for updated videos, and the announcement when the class goes live.

Thank you for taking the time to make this great tut! I was wondering if this method could be viable for making matterport styled virtual tours. Let's say if you were to make a virtual tour for a museum with big halls and maybe two or three floors, and you are trying to simulate a customer walking in the museum from point to point. Would you think that it is still viable to make all the panos using this workflow or would it just be better to give up and surrender to the restricting matterport system. Anyway, thanks for the tips Rich!

You can make some pretty amazing tours easily these days. There are many 360 image hosting services now, and you can really deliver some high end results with them. And there are some service providers who are really stepping up the game for virtual tours. For instance, Metareal can create floor plans and 3D dollhouse models from your 360s. Check out Ben Claremont's video on Metareal. I think you'll be amazed. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bJqHq5dnrZ-wf6c.html

I believe it does the bracketing as well but what I’ve read is that it doesn’t hit the same quality as the Z1. It does do a better video job than the Z1. Since I have no plans for 360 videos any time soon the Z1 made more sense for me. 😀

Try importing the jpegs with the DNG files. You will notice they have the same names. Theta stitcher needs to see the jpeg version alongside the DNG in lightroom to work properly. You don't need to touch the jpegs. Just have them in the screen base strip. Great video, all the same. I will be back.

Thanks for your video! Can you explain what is the difference of shooting with/without dualfisheye plugin?
@AZ-Drone
@AZ-Drone 3 жыл бұрын
The dual fish eye can help you generate bracketed images pretty easily in a more automated fashion. You can also produce completed HDR images with the plugin. Personally I've found that I prefer using the bracketing mode that comes on the Z1. I can see my brackets, see what their exposures look like before shooting, and make adjustments prior to taking my photos. Also I can see all of that on the iPhone app. When using the Dual Fish Eye you can't control the shooting with your app. You have to manually click the shutter on the Z1. I prefer the control I have with the app and the bracketing. The dual fish eye is still a good plugin though.

Good afternoon Jim. I know that there are a few videos on KZfaq covering the issue with the Stitcher and some installs on Mac. Not all of us run into the issue it seems. Very odd. There's also a tutorial on making the stitcher a "stand alone" application that doesn't require LR (it would be nice just to have the standalone direct from Ricoh). Here's the link to making the stitcher stand alone. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdZpYMp52JqwqoE.html Here's how I solved the issue for myself. I bought a Mac Mini M1, loaded Lightroom and the Stitcher, and it just worked....Kind of an expensive solution, and that's not the reason I got the new mini. 😀. Be sure to check out the link above to see about making it stand alone.

Good morning! I did in fact try the DNG HDR 9 setup. And yes the Z1 does process in camera for that setup. I can say it worked, but for my testing I didn't feel it worked as well as setting up the brackets myself. That doesn't mean it's a bad approach. It could be my own impatience with it as well.

There isn't a need for a plugin from Lightroom to PTGUI. In your Lightroom preferences you can add PTGUI as an editing program from Lightroom. Go under "External Editing" in your Lightroom preferences, add the location of PTGUI to your "Additional External Editor" and you can easily export from Lightroom into PTGUI.

For me I use Lightroom primarily because it is such a good image management platform. If you use keywords, custom titles, and other tools in Lightroom you'll be able to find your images quickly and easily. It's also a great editing platform for photos as well. I also use Luminar, Aurora HDR, Photomatix, Photoshop, and a few other editing programs as well. But when it comes to managing tens of thousands of photos Lightroom is where I start.

@@AZ-Drone Thank you so much Rich Charpentier for such a detailed answer. Since the comment, I decided to go for buying the Lightroom and Photoshop, and it has been a strungle to get all the workflow right. Importing, stiching, removing the tripod, etc, Raw to Tiff to Jpeg and in the end i got a loss of quality image. However your vídeo is super clear and explains the brackting very well. Thank you so much for sharing with the community. :) Now, at this very moment, I am doing the brackting acording to your video. And yes, when it comes the part to use the Theta Sticher, I got also an error: "The image that can be processed is 7296 x 3648" . At the moment of this video have ever came across with the same error? You found any solution? Or continue to go to the PT Gui? Thank you so much. Kind regards from the Azores Islands

@@BlackLensesProject I haven't gotten that particular error from the Theta Stitcher. Have you checked with Theta's support on why that one is coming up for you? I'm glad to hear the video was helpful for you. I'll be doing a few more over the next couple of weeks, as we have a new client for 360 work. So that's a great opportunity to do some more videos. It does take some practice and fine tuning in your workflow to get the results you're after. Reading that you had a loss of quality is concerning. I've been finding some good quality with the process I've been following. If I think of additional ways to help with the quality I'll be sure to post here as well.

Hey there Jim. First off, sorry for my delay. I'd seen your comment on my iPhone app and then forgot to respond. With PTGui and the Z1 I too have had a few tough stitches. You need something going on along the lens sides. If there's a lot of blank or open areas along the edges I've had problems. Furnished houses, no troubles. Homes that are empty and have a lot of empty space? Problems. So here's how I solved it. I bought a pack of Pink Post-it notes. When I have a lot of open space in a room I go around and pop up the post-its where I think the lens edges are. I promise, it really works. Worst case scenario I go in and do a few manual control points with the post-its.

Really you can use the automated 360 setting on the Z1, the automated HDR mode, or you can do DNG bracketing. The multi-bracketed DNGs will yield your best result. But there's more work to those images. No matter what mode you use, they'll work on Matterport. If you have the time, I'd suggest doing multi-bracketed DNGs for your best results.

Is really getting bad, I cannot do my job with these issues. Any suggestions on how to fix this. Thank you, ALFIO.

Unfortunately I haven't tried the Zillow app for controlling the Z1. Normally I used the Theta Z1's app connected to my iPhone. I capture my images, edit, and then upload directly to the 360 hosting site (in this case Zillow). Here's the link for Zillow's step by step. www.zillow.com/z/3d-home/360-camera-guide/ The triangle with the Exclamation point is telling you that the GPS is not calibrated well. When using the Theata Z1 with Matterport app to capture scans, what is the best recommended camera settings to set the Z1?
@AZ-Drone
@AZ-Drone 2 жыл бұрын
I actually don't use the Matterport app for my scans. I use the Theta App or the Dual Fisheye Plugin to capture the 360 images, process the images in Lightroom, then use the Ricoh Stitcher app for stitching the images. Once stitched they are ready to upload to a number of services. Normally for higher end interiors I use the Dual Fisheye Plugin. I don't run that from the Ricoh app, I run it directly from the Theta Z1 itself. With it I can create "HDR DNGs" which have a lot of room for edits in Lightroom.

Greetings, the Ricoh Theta Z1 produces both JPG and DNG files in one shutter release. When opening the DNG file to edit in Photoshop the workspace has two spheres. After applying the adjustments (white balance etc.), I am unable to save to the rectangular format used for viewing in 360 degree viewers. The original JPG file (rectangular format) can be edited and saved correctly but do not have the editing richness like the raw DNG files. Please advise how to save out the edited raw DNG files (two spheres) into a 360 degree viewable format (rectangular). Thank
@AZ-Drone
@AZ-Drone 3 жыл бұрын
In order to take the DNG file and get it to the rectangular you need to use Ricoh's stitcher or another application like PT Gui. Here's what I do: Import the DNGs to Adobe's Lightroom. I do my basic RAW workflow in Lightroom. Once I'm satisfied with the overall image I export the "spheres" to PTGui. Ricoh's stitcher is free, so if you don't have PTGui, export the edited Lightroom rendering to Ricoh's stitcher. Ricoh's Stitcher and PTGui will each render your rectangular image, and then you can save that back to Lightroom.

I may be a noob at all this but I understood that it is a good idea to have all the windows open and all lights on for 360 virtual tour photos, I wonder if turning on the lights would have saved you a bunch of work, also it is my understanding that the theta Z1 can render a blend of the HDR multi shots for you so you don't have to do the work, again saving you a bunch of time. I do know that some people like to manually set everything when it comes to their images, but if the camera does a great job of doing it itself then why double your workflow, concentrate your work on the, stills and let the 360 work for itself, they don't earn that much more than just photos. I do also realize this was made over a year ago, so things may have changed.
@AZ-Drone
@AZ-Drone 2 жыл бұрын
Having the windows exposed and turning on lights can be helpful. Sadly, houses are built to live in, not to be photographed. So often you'll run into "extreme" lighting issues that can't be fixed with lights and windows. I previous home had a huge living room with poor lighting. Big windows and a sliding door on the north side, dark living room on south side. Extreme challenge to be sure. The automatic modes on the Z1 are useful for standard walk throughs. But if you're looking to generate higher end images there's always a little extra work.

I am getting acceptable results using AE Bracketing and 5 images at 2 stops apart. What is the advantage of multi-bracket over AE? My most used method is actually the "Dual Fisheye Plugin." It brackets for me up to 9 images. Multi-bracket is a good deal of work as you're moving room from room as you noted. @@AZ-Drone Hey Rich, thanks for the reply. I am in agreement with you that multi-bracket for internal darker rooms (controlled by smartphone app) is the way forward here. However, it would seem that nobody has done a complete 'How To' workflow of the Z1 using multi-bracket, and then using the Ricoh stitcher, before then doing final cleanup in Affinity Photo. I have been able to import my HDR DNG multi bracket x 5 shots into Affinity Photo and then merge together as one HDR image (from the 5 brackets), but I can't then get it into Ricoh stitcher, which always wants to connect to Adobe Lightroom! I think Ricoh are missing a major trick here! (and so are Affinity Photo if they want new customers). Hence, might you be able to explain how this is done from 18.13 in the above video, but using Ricoh stitcher and then Affinity Photo. Many thanks, Stuart

@AZ-Drone
@AZ-Drone 2 жыл бұрын
Good morning. It sounds like you're very new to doing 360 models. Over time the process will become easier. Most likely you'll want to upload your images as jpgs to Matterport. You can have the Z1 automatically create jpgs but they won't be the highest quality. Doing HDR Multi Bracketed images, editing them in something like lightroom, and then exporting the final images as jpgs will most likely yield better results (as you learn how to edit the HDRs). Bottom line? Today you could generate jpgs automatically, but they won't be the best quality you can offer. I personally use the "Dual Fisheye Plugin" with my Z1. I take bracketed images that are merged into an HDR DNG. I edit the HDR DNG in Lightroom, then I export to jpg for the 360 hosting platform I use. As far as the "Dollhouse". That is a presentation format that shows a 3D interior of the images you captured. You upload the jpgs to Matterport, and they assemble the dollhouse for you with the images you provide. Here's and example. my.matterport.com/show/?m=iDDLAfGC7zC Here's one more dollhouse sample. my.matterport.com/show/?m=Y8soRH8yZdY&_ga=2.91203738.1464658486.1647005515-564870370.1647005514&_gac=1.85124843.1647005515.CjwKCAiAg6yRBhBNEiwAeVyL0FVkT9vAg48fuKSt1GEAwipzjjGURcjeIGIYVxxlUycifiBLg0nL6hoC-y8QAvD_BwE

@@AZ-Drone, I wish I can do jobs like you. As I mentioned, Up till now I am not sure which format I upload the images tMatterport for dollhouse as the place I am going to shoot is an office with light and darkened areas. I must do at least breaking. But Matterport says I must shoot and direct upload the images. Accumulating in any folder and then uploading is not allowed. I am stuck. If a dollhouse was required by eh client then I would have selected a different platform just for the interactive tour. Thnx for sharing your Dollhouse sample. were they just single Jpeg images that you uploaded to Matterport platform?

@@salimhabib5891 You cannot control any image settings when using Matterport. You use their Capture app to upload to their cloud for processing and that’s it. No image control whatsoever. The dollhouse view will automatically be generated by Matterport if you fully filled out the model correctly with enough scans.

I tried the dual fisheye plugin with 9 bracketed shot. Stitched and merged in ptgui. Results is not too bad but it far from DSLR. A bit disappointed with the result. I think the technology is not there yet.

Raphael Lencrerot have you tried the built in Multi Bracket mode that comes installed on the Z1? I found better results with it than the dual dish eye. Make sure each bracket you create is at the lowest ISO it can be. And I agree. Not as good as a DSLR but still pretty decent for a mid range 360.

@@AZ-Drone Yes I tried. The best result came with the 9 bracketed shot stitched and merged using ptgui plus extra work on lightroom. It's ok for real estate listings since it doesn't stay long. For businesses showroom I would prefer to provide DSLR one even if it more time consuming. Cheers

I saw the bottom of your tripod in the final shot. Do you ever get rid of it?
@AZ-Drone

Greg Daley yes there are several ways to get rid of it. You can remove it in photoshop easily with a content aware removal. Or you can put a little banner at the bottom with your business name.

I have the basic ricoh theta app downloaded on my phone but theres no option for multibracket shooting. Am I the only one having this issue?
@AZ-Drone
@AZ-Drone Жыл бұрын
Once in the Theta Z1 app go to the "shooting button" . That will put you in the mode where you can see your scene. In the upper right corner you'll notice cog / sprocket. Click on that. You'll be in the "Shooting Settings" now. Near the top you'll see an option for Shooting Method. Click in there and select from Normal shooting, Interval shooting, Interval composite, Multi bracket, and Animation photo.

My son just gave me one of these. He's a pro who shoots with a Matterport rig and this this this one got a tiny chip on one lens during a car shoot. Says he can't use it. Waiting for one of those Black Magic Rigs to get nicked, Haha! I'll end up smashing it on a mountain bike ride probably.

How bad is the nick on the lens? If it's not huge you might be able to easily edit the images, and remove the nick.

@@theantiqueactionfigure sometimes you can fix areas in your video as well. Depends on how much time you want to put into it. Just so you know, the Z1 is not a great video camera at all. Great for standard 360 images, not so great for video.

I use a ThetaZ1 for vfx work creating 360 HDRI and its great. My only issue with the device is that its initial setup is extremely clumbsy and confusing. I mean a headache of biblical proportions, They made a device that does a great job, but its interface is attrocious. You must connect the device with a separate mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet to operate the device and setup things. But once youve done so.. you come to realize that the pain of operating the device is worth the end results.

You're completely correct. Initial setup was awkward to say the least. I've gotten used to the camera now, so it's more familiar to me now. And yes, the pain of operating the devise is worth those end results. We'll be doing another interior walkthrough of a construction site on Thursday, and we'll be using the Z1 again!
