0:54 This is the bridge my late father designed (in 1979-1981) over the canal Dessel to Kwaadmechelen in Mol (Belgium - Europe). Over the bridge is a pipe which starts at Lommel and ends at the white sand processing plant of Sibelco in Mol. A very long distance for transporting white sand with booster stations along its way.

@10:19 I grew up a live-aboard on sailboats... I do find this comforting. It's the confidence of a ship (or sailboat) built to handle anything nature can throw at it. Our 60ft staysail schooner was hand-built by my father, and it was capable of going in one side of a Katrina sized hurricane and coming out the other side still under sail. I saw our entire foredeck completely engulfed by the wake of a huge Alaskan ferry. We ducked into the pilothouse and looked up through green-water over the pilothouse windows at my father hanging on for dear life to the foremast head in a bosun's chair. Knowing you are safe despite the conditions is IMMENSELY comforting.

Sailing through Category V hurricanes were my favorite experiences in my childhood too. Wind speeds above 150 knots make the spinnaker really work. And waves higher than 30 ft make a 20 ton boat surf like a board, which is IMMENSE fun ! What's more my uncle built a brigantine which could even endure a tornado. Actually one of these tornados lifted that boat from its dry dock and dropped it after a couple of miles into the sea, saving expenses for refloating. It was so sturdy that dear uncle who happened to be on the boat at that time didn't even stop sipping his tea during the ride by the tornado. His only concern was that cows lifted by that tornado and circling around his brigantine while inside the vortex would drop their manure on his beautiful craft. Especially the bulls, which are so full of bullsh..., you know :)

5:55 for those interested.... there is a very extensive documantary about this crane incident.... with estimated total damage between 50 and 100 million Euro probably one of the most expensive ones ever... it happened in a German harbour (Hannover or Hamburg) some years ago. This happened when this crane/vessel was put through it’s tests upon being commissioned.... the crane was supposed to lift a 5.000 ton(!!!!!) barge from the water when the hook ‘snapped’.... By the way the crane was rated to lift upto 10.000 tons!!!

0:55 I had a workmate who sailed his raised mast into 33KV power lines. This blew the bottom out of his boat and the brains of his girl friend, who, if she spoke to him again, never went sailing with him again. This was a guy who tried to slingshot launch his boat but braked too early and landed the boat on the ramp, with considerable damage to the boat: it fell of its keel onto the concrete.

2:39 what's happening here? I know small boats with outboards can trim the motor up and just spray water everywhere, but a ship that big... it doesn't have prop trim, does it? I thought they had bow planers that are wings underwater and not a changed angle of the prop.
@RiverRat904 Жыл бұрын
It's a jet drive. The reverse drops a gate over the nozzle and redirects the water forwards. Looks like maybe an emergency stop drill where they slammed it into reverse to stop the ship. That's my guess. It's the guy at 3:38 that's insane!!
@shaunolinger96411 ай бұрын
This is called a "crash back", or "emergency astern". It's a maneuver going from full power ahead to full power backwards instantly. If I remember right this is on one of the littoral patrol ships the US Navy is now decommissioning for major structural and mechanical faults. They are pump-jet driven, and work much the same as an AlumaWeld jet boat. It's pretty amazing how a navy patrol ship that big can stop so fast. Hell of a strain on the hull and engines though.

I must come back on the figures I just stated in my previous reactions:The hook snapped at around 2600 tonnes weight... But it was,like the crane,supposed to be able to lift 5.000 tons.... the test was with a 5.500 ton barge.... 10% overweight being the standard to approve all parts of a crane are up to the job....

@10:11 I watch videos of weather at sea like this and imagine doing this in wooden ship back in the 17-1800's. How hard was your life that you were welling to climb onto a little wooden ship and go out into this with a bunch of homeless men you hired at the pub in town? BUT THEY DID! And did it over and over again. Boggles my mind. The bones that must litter the ocean's floors. God bless 'em. Hearts of iron.
