Hi Guys, couple of points to clarify - the Q Acoustics 3030i are £329 not £299 so the fact the Diamond 12.1 have better overall soundstage clarity is very cool right - hence the comment. Secondly to better explain the Wharfedale speaker line in case I caused any confusion - its Elysian Top EVO Middle and then Diamond - but with Linton and Denton being more of a specialist speaker. Hope that helps if I confused anyone - sorry if I did :) If you would like to know more come and see my website review www.pursuitperfectsystem.com/wharfedale-diamond-12-1-stand-mount-speaker-review/

I just bought a 12.2 and love it! Thats a huge compliment as my current stable has Kef LS50, Focal chora 816, sonus faber cremona auditor. All at far higher price points. I bought it because it can give me something my other speakers cannot. A warm and relaxed sound that is tonally well balanced and not too exagerated. Sure it can’t match the accuracy and speed of my other speakers but the warm sound can keep me in bliss and listen far longer (and fall asleep on the sofa). What suprised me the most is that the sacrifices in speed, accuracy and top end air is fairly small so am really pleasantly suprised how good budget speakers are these days!.

Coming from NHT Superones, the NHT were positively natural sounding which I enjoy. I just got these 12.1’s and they are a step above. The Diamonds’ high frequency is much “airier” and smoother with no fatigue or harshness. Bass is punchy for being smaller drivers. They sound so much livelier. For those of you wondering, just get the Diamonds. Will not disappoint.

Nice summary... My only complaint (and it is not of PPS necessarily at all) is that it seem each time a new Diamond speaker is introduced it is *always* the XX.1 version that receives scores of reviews. I've always preferred the larger .2 versions but they never seem to get any press whatsoever. Would hugely appreciate if you could get your hands on a pair of those to compare.

Good old Diamonds. In the 80s you could buy a "portable" system in a flight case: Sony Discman, Naim Nait amp and Diamonds. My first pair were Wharfedale Active Diamonds, I loved them.

Just running in my new Wharfedale diamond 12.1's and they're sounding amazing off my 60w Naim nait 5si and a dirt cheap $29 DVD player until my cd transport and dac arrives. Blown away. Better than the B+W 686's I had and even nicer than the Monitor Audio silver s2,s although slightly less detailed hi's than the MA's overall amazing speakers and lovely looking too.

The Rank Corporation (aptly named) destroyed a venerable pioneering company. Driven, like many speaker manufacturers, in pursuit of unsustainable profits, they pandered to acoustic tastes in the US that best served top 40 music and rock. Nothing wrong with either genre but it brought about declining efficiency and nuance while requiring ever more watts to feed them. Hence an entire generation of Americans and others I assume who conflated the mere mention of triple and quadruple digit wattage with a well designed amp. I run my speakers (all Wharfedale 1950s/1960’s drivers) off 3watts. Couldn’t be happier. Oh, I have a pair of BIC Venturi Formula 4’s pulled from the trash that I can drive to ear shattering levels when needed. ;)

I'm glad to see they got rid of the foam surrounds on the woofer from the 11 series but I wish they would have kept the down-firing port.
@drazenbabich
@drazenbabich 3 жыл бұрын
Those foam surrounds aren't the same material used in 60es and 70es. Everyone's learned a lesson from history, including driver makers. Unfortunately the push back and the negative responses from the great unwashed made Wharfedale pull back on foam surrounds even though they're sonically a step above the rubber. Sad but true.
@drazenbabich
@drazenbabich 3 жыл бұрын
@AB CD No they're not. They proved it in the lab too, not just by the listener's ear. Plenty of it being written on this topic over the recent years. There isn't only Wharfedale that moved over the years to the downward firing port, right up to their flagships. You must have ended up with a dud, sorry it made you feel like that.

Watching this 2 years later, I wouldn't say Karl was "someone new". Maybe new to Wharfedale, but he was with Q Acoustic previously having designed the Q Acoustics 3020i and 3030i. I still love the Wharfedale Diamond series though. They are very impressive for their price point. I would probably compare the diamond 12.1 to the 3020i. That said, the 12.1 and the 12.2 have similar performance characteristics, just with a better bass extension on the 12.2, but that is expected with the bigger woofer/mid driver on the 12.2. The 12.2 is very nicely organised and has great imaging, like the 12.1.

I have the smaller Diamond 12.0 connected to the Arylic A50+ and in the room I use them they sound at their most addicting with a +1 bump in bass and +3 in treble for any accoustic performance. Truly incredible solid speakers that sound bigger than they are and deliver enjoyment. I also own the Wharfedale Evo 4.2, which has a bit more openess in the midrange (play some upright bass and there is just an extra detailed layer that most bookshelves don't craft out). But apart from that I could live with the diamonds.

Got myself a pair of these yesterday out of curiosity really. ( they will be replacing some Dali Zenzor 1’s in the bedroom if they sound ok in there ) I’ve been on a budget speaker journey since lockdown, trying to find the perfect speakers for the sitting room. Tried Zenzor 1’s , Zenzor 3, BW 606 , Kef 350, RP500, Triangle BR03 and finally decided the Triangle BR02 was best for me in that room. The first impression of 12.1’s out of the box is the bass! Wow…much tighter and lower than the triangle. Haven’t yet had time to compare anything else yet

Today I was going to pull the trigger on a pair of B&W 606s, but a last minute look at some reviews, the thing that bothered me was that they all mentioned that the treble and top end may cause listening fatigue. As someone who struggles listening to mp3s and online digital music in general For any length of time, I’ve started to doubt the 606s. I love the warmth of vinyl and mainly buy and listen to old and used albums on a retro 80s system ( rebel revolver turntable, Rotel amp, old pair of misson speakers). Started to look at a new set of speakers with a budget of up to £500, but I feel the Wharfdale diamond 12.1 maybe an option for me, despite being below my initial budget. What would be everyone’s recommendations, considerations? I plan on updating my system gradually, starting with my speakers. Might be worth pointing out that my music room is a tiny box room with about 5ft between me and the speakers!! 🙏

Same here. My ears are prone to be fatigued from high-end frequencies. I listed to the B & W 600 and 700 series and for my ears, they were just too bright. I heard the Wharfdale Diamond 225 recently, and I was floored. I think they are quite possibly the best sounding bookshelf speaker I've heard under $1,000. Also, similar to the B & W's, listened to the Focal Chora 706 and felt underwhelmed as it seemed cold and very bright. I'm probably going to purchase Wharfdale 225's or maybe these 12.1's if they ever come to the U.S.

Thanks for keeping all of us in the Wharfedale loop :) As a previous owner of the Diamond 9.1, I used to prefer them over the Usher S520's, Nola Mini's, and Energy Connoisseur C1's I also owned during the same time period. Now I own a pair of Wharfedale D320's (which I purchased due to being inspired by your video of them on the Bristol hi-fi event). It's so perplexing to me that any speaker manufacturer produce so many lines of "affordable and entry level" speakers to choose from. Is there really that much difference in each speaker line to justify and claim a distinct and improved audiophile listening experience? I wonder if the D series is simply the scrap heap or audio leftovers for Wharfedale? I do enjoy my D320's though.

I have just been discussing this as what I didn't explain correctly is how things are organised with the speakers - so Elysian Top is obvious then EVO then Diamond - where I got it wrong is for me because the sound was so good from the Diamond 12.1 I sat it in the middle of pack just below the Linton / Denton and EVO's but in the middle. That is how much impression they made on me man, def not scrap hear far far from it

@@MAudiophile Well that's simple actually... They were obviously confident in 12.1's overall sound quality and therefore Hit the Audience that simply cannot afford anything more (or even the 12.1 is a stretch) with the 12.1's and with such a good review those who can afford the 12.2s will surely upgrade. Had the review been for the 12.2s there would have been a few folks not even watching due to the cost, as well as those who did watch having to 'wonder' IF the cheaper 12.1s could possibly be as good and to what level of Bass and other aspects would be lost. So not good. Whereas all folks so impressed by the 12.1 with the cash for the 12.2s won't hesitate to get 12.2s (no questions asked). So a little Sales & Marketing 101 that not all manufacturers Think to employ (or they simply choose not to for whatever reason. Although one reason being that their smaller speaker in the line is in fact much lacking, which is often the case, but obviously not in the case of the 12.1s).

No they did send them to me for this review though I didnt buy them, and they went back after. I have created a sound demo video to back up and support everything I said about them in the video - I always do this as I think it helps with authenticity. KZfaq has blocked a few of them after they have been live for months sometimes due to the music that is used in them. Edit: No sooner had I published this comment, than you spoke directly to the challenge of carrying off a driver-specific comparison when the manufacturers are only sending a finite number of review specimens -- sorry. If the choice of a comp for a speaker under review comes down to price-appropriate vs same driver-size, personally I'd vote for same driver-size. In my experience, at least, it's much easier to critically contrast two speakers that both have the same bass driver size, than it is to critically contrast two speakers that cost the same but have differently sized bass drivers. So, what I'm saying, I think the Q Acoustics 3020i would have been a more informative comp here, rather than the 3030i, despite the price difference.

The 3030i may give the illusion of being easier to drive because of the bigger sound but I dont think they are. I turned the wharfedale up slightly more but that was more me being greedy I think. It is important to a multitude of music lovers & musicians, to have a system which is forgiving enough ( not sharply analytical in it's presentation of the music), to convey musical justice to lesser recordings. Realistically, we all love such a wide variety of music and genres. I can't imagine anyone only interested in listening to the top 20 highest quality recordings of all time. I'm looking to make a 3.1 system in a different room. Would you recommend sticking with the 220 and getting the appropiate center channel along with it, or do you think there's a big jump between the 220 and the new 12 series to warrant an upgrade and going with 12 series instead? Thanks!
@Plastpackad
@Plastpackad 3 жыл бұрын
Pardon me for jumping in. I would say a small and audiophile subwoofer would be a great upgrade for the D220. I have a the D225 and have hard time finding any better sounding speaker below £1k. One big difference between the new and old Dimonds are the base port. I think the downwards port is better but propably more expensive to produce. You can widen the space between the baseplate and cabinet to open up the sound on old Dimonds. And try bi-wiring - did a great boost on mine. Cheers.

The 12.1 is better. Wider sound stage and better separation, and instruments like strings sounds more natural. I have the 3030i, had more of a presence and bigger sound, but for classical music I would prefer the 12.1

So far I still like the Cabasse Antigua 170, not the prettiest but they look good with grills on, especially the oak cabinets. But not the easiest to find. I am not old and not young, think I need the brighter treble though, Ha !

Yeah I get that totally, can be a room acoustics thing too, it works in my room with all the treatment. I am pretty sure the cabasee website shows a dealer in London if you are UK based. It would also be worth demoing the Klipsch and EVO 4.2 if you can because then you get different takes on it and in a more normal rooms acoustics it will be a little different too :)

@@drazenbabich just because you own an 11 doesnt mean the 12 is inferior. Ive heard the 12.0, 12.1 and 12.2 compared to the 11.1 and 11.2 and nearly in all ways the 12 is an improvement. My friend was selling Klipsch R62 II at good price ( approx 700US $- new is double price in India). But I did not go for it. He upgraded to SVS Ultra towers used. He said he is getting great midrange now which was lacking earlier. I am looking for 3 way towers, even used. Which would be great upto 1000$ ? Would prefer 8 ohm, at least 87 db sensitivity. What about multiple distorted guitars (any sort of metal or post-rock) in a busy mix? My Wharfedale 230 are not that bad with in this kind of music but paper/poly cones bring some natural compression to that material. I play guitar and start to think that lossy paper/poly cones are better suited for rock music, they play it less clinical although they might be less detailed.
