Single track trails in the state of Idaho are well known to be rugged and challenging, but this trail leaves very little room for ANY mistakes.
In this video, I'll be traversing one of the deadliest single track trails in the whole state. At points this trail is suspended on the edge of a 100 foot cliff, leaving no room to make a single mistake..
In part one, I'll be riding downstream and part two I'll be riding up stream.
There's only one way in, and one way out, and I am determined to see it through..
Enjoy the video!

Idaho Viewers- If you know the trail I am riding please keep the trail number / trail name private as to prevent overuse in the area. Thank you! UPDATE: I knew going into this that I would receive a lot of flak for trying to "hide the trail from people". If you really want to find the trail, you can do some research and find it. All I was trying to do was mitigate the potential impact I could have by making a video about it. All that matters is that if you ride the trail, you respect everyone else who uses it, don't trash the area, or do anything that could cause it to get shut down like how we saw with Moab. Just be respectful please.

@kevintruax5130 hey man, major respect to you for being a trail clearer. I want to get a saw mount so I can help the early season efforts because you guys are the backbone of the single track riding community. I love this state to bits and I know how the internet can impact these areas so I want to keep them hard to find 🤙🏼

I did trail maintenance here with the Forest Service back in 1976. Steep country formed of unstable decomposed granite. The only place to sit down was on the trail itself. Lots of drilling and blasting. It was built for horse and mule traffic. Love seeing the terrain and foliage with a hint of fall color.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve ridden trails in California, Colorado, Montana, Pennsylvania & West Virginia about as challenging, many more in Alaska. I didn’t open gates or venture onto private property. Stay off of that seat and focused on the trail ahead of you when riding single track on treacherous terrain. If you must lean for balance always do it toward the wall with your bike tilted towards the drop. Happy trails.

I am an Idaho native. Born in S. Idaho and raised on a large ranch/farm. Raced MX from about the age of eight up to right after HS graduation. Three years ago I ordered a new KTM300XCW but, during Covid it took a bit to get here. I began riding single track all over the lower half of the state and rode this trail last year. Insane and like most all trails here it is beautiful. Last year I had a slow speed crash as I didn’t realize my front tire was losing air after turning around at a huge fallen log blocking the trail. Got back to the creek (normally a creek but, a raging river after three days of rain. Turned to cross the river tire peeled a little off the rim and threw me into the river. Crawled the best I could but, couldn’t get my lower parts out of the water. Was on a trail that looked like it was overgrown for years. It was a Monday and no riders or vehicles anywhere. After about three hours I was resigned to die. Then out of nowhere three guys came by and shortly thereafter life flight was there. Broke my right clavicle, every rib on my right side, punctured right lung, broken ankle in three places and a torn ligament, so much for Tech 7’s protecting my feet. “This trail” is great riding but, if you want a challenge, ride “the Tour of Idaho”! Great riding to you all 🫡🤙🤙🤙

Now that I’m 69, I mostly ride my e-bike on trails and still have a blast going fast to the point of being dangerous then back off just a bit. The good e-bikes now days cost the same as I paid for my KTM 450 I had 15 years ago. Still worth it though.

Posting this as he has is not going to lead to overuse. A) ATVs & UTVs can’t use it. B) Just as many comments have indicated, most (the few that don’t is not changing this trails situation) dirt-bike riders know and respect their limits. C) Back to “A” is what has led to 50” and wider 4 wheel vehicles overuse and abuse of trails is the real problem! Quite frankly uploads of the Alpine Loop in CO and other such trails is a bigger issue than this video. Not to mention BDRs publicity. Let’s find the bright side; the more “recreationalist” we have in the off-road world the greater number of supporters to keep its access and that we have to fight those who try to take it away……

Thats so nice of you to say! Riding in these backcountry areas is a life passion of mine. I'm 22 and have been riding for 10 years now. It began with trails, progressed into racing for years, and after all the racing injuries caught up with me, I came to love riding/exploring these remote areas. Someone else was mentioning smaller bikes for this trail too and honestly I think thats a half decent idea! I was riding a 500 in that video, but that bike has massive power and is on the heavy side. Having something lightweight and easy to manage could be smart for that trail! Thanks! I carry everyday and especially when I am out in the middle of nowhere lol. Only thing I have wondered is if I ought to bump up to a bigger cartridge because I have had my own run ins with bears before.

Awh thanks! Whats the riding like out there?? Honestly when it comes to bike selection, a lot of people like to just go for the big beefy motors but forget about the added weight. I've seen a few of those 200s around and I've heard the KDX 200 was a dream as well. All that matters is riding what is most comfortable and FUN

Hey man, wowza, thats knarly...but you rode confidently. Skills. Looked more like MTB trail. Hey, got a Q for ya. On looking for trails and adventures on the 500 or say a 650, would you say you'd be good with something like a SUV thats AWD or would you need a 4 x 4 rig say a Land cruiser or something of that nautre?? I wanted ask you cause you said you ride often and go to these places w bike on carrier... so the vehicle is important as well. What say you ?? Is an SUV enough ? With some AT tires ... V8 or V6 enough ? Etc.
@madjack_757
@madjack_757 2 ай бұрын
Suv is definitely more than enough. The biggest factors are going to be having a trailer that’s not on wheels and is suspended only from the vehicle. Then you’ll have to ensure that trailer hitch is able to handle the downwards weight of a suspended trailer and the bike.

Thanks! I actually loved the ride! Part of my passion for riding comes from two things- a love of being in places that make me feel small and setting myself into a mental state where I am only focussed on the ride and nothing else that was going on in my life at the time. I accomplished both things on that trail especially since I had it all to myself!!

@@madjack_757 In 1978, I scouted out a trail close to Mt St Helens that was open to dirt bikes. I was the trail guild for 3 other riders, all of them were way above me in ability. When we unloaded one of them asked me how he should gear his bike. (he changed the countershaft sprocket) I told him to put the lowest gearing on that he had. He looked at me over the top of his glasses, and I told him, "seriously, you will never get out of second gear today." Off they went. At every trail junction, they would be waiting, and I would point which way to go, and they were off like a shot. We had to cross a fairly deep stream, and one of them tipped over, and he hydro-locked his engine. It took us 30 minutes to get it going, and we were off again. The map showed five 180 degree switchbacks, but in fact there were 33 180 degree switchbacks. These switchbacks were so tight that going up, I would lean back and gas it a little bit and lift the front wheel and swing it down to the next section. Going back, I had to shut off the bike, get off, and drag the front end around. I was riding a Yamaha XT500 at that time. By the way, I caught all of the Hot-Shoes on this section of the trail. Their MX types of bikes were not as good as my thumper. LOL When we made it back to the trucks, all of them said that it had been years since they had had this much fun. Sadly, this trail is now covered with several feet of volcanic ash.

Even though you were probably on the heaviest bike, I bet that torque that you had from the super thumper helped so much to climb those mountains!!@@BuilderofRat

The best dual sport tire combo I've found is the shinko 216mx 90/100 cheater front paired with maxxis desert it 110/100 rear. They wear at the same rate and both last forever. Shinko 505 rear works good in slick rock but doesn't last and I can't tell difference in traction elsewhere except the extreme loss of traction at end of life and can't trust it in the rocks at speed due to the soft compound.

My issue when finding this trail was that each source I researched it had different directions for me to get there. Additionally, online it had been marked as the wrong trail numbers by different sources. It’s very off the beaten path and you gotta go look for it to find it. First day of driving was like 6+ hours and the second day was 3 hours. It’s doable on your mountain bike.

East of Kellogg in the Coeur d'Alene national Forest. You start from the junction of devil's peak trail and Independence Creek trail. It starts climbing steeply. Buddy and I got up that trail and I threw in the towel a couple hundred yards in. I knew I was going to die if we kept going. You should go and film that one, just don't go solo.
