Thank you you helped me figure something out even though I don’t need to repair the gears in the transmission. Well done.

I have this same Poulan Pro mower shown in the video and it won't move - one rear wheel goes forward and the other backwards. I was pushing it out of the shed and it just locked up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very interesting. Is there a way to check and/or change/fill the gear oil without having a hole blown in the bottom of the transaxle?
@HowToLou2 жыл бұрын
That oil is not meant to be changed. You have to split open the shell to do it.

@@HowToLou Well, isn't that great. I've had to do the same thing in the past on automatic meat slicers. At least my mower is working fine for now. Thanks for your reply!

On my peerless mtd-206, there is a rubber plug up top that you can pull out to fill it up and check it.

I image you can drill and tap a hole for a drain plug. I did it on my 2011 ford flex, a year they did not have one on the ptu. after that they had a drain and fill plug factory spec. should be a lot easier for a garden/lawn tractor.@@JRobert111111

Apparently that hose clamp cleared the gears...almost looked like it wouldn't.

Was your lawnmower making a loud noise while driving and was that how you knew thr transmission was the problem ?

They’re actually made by Husqvarna or AYP American yard products….mtd has started only making craftsmans in early 2014 late 2016

Hello. I have the same Lawnmower. Do you know why it's hard to change gears? thanks.
@HowToLou2 жыл бұрын
Check all the linkages from the shift lever to the tranny, and make sure they are all easy to move. If so, you likely will have to split open the tranny, clean it out, and put in new gear oil.

Great Vid! Thx! I have a ~2005 Craftsman DY4000. It starts jerking under load or in high gear. And makes a mild click noise. I've had the belt replaced. Read that maybe simply adding gear oil might fix? Thoughts? Thx!
@HowToLou Жыл бұрын
I suspect one of your gears lost a few teeth. The jerk/click is when the gear spins free until it hits teeth again. This is hammering away and likely breaking off more teeth. I would open the tranny and replace that gear. Here is how: Riding Lawnmower Transmission Repair kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZOYZt2EvrC-iYk.html

@@HowToLou That's what I was thinking as well. I found the schematic for my specific transmission. Where is your go to for gears/parts? You also mentioned used tranny, where are those? Ebay? Thanks for your help. Again, great video!

Craftsman’s are not made by mtd, they are made by AYP (the older ones atleast)

I go to updates every year. We won't go there. Been in the business since 1989. Husky, Poulan, and McCulloch are AYP. MTD is still a pain in the ass as always.
@kevinmurphy2426 Жыл бұрын
MTD has a variable speed forward trans. Double pulley. AYP was never that stupid. LOL
