In "Skippy & The Skipping Transmission", local yokel, Skip The Second Guess Man comes in to use Taryl's restroom facilities before dropping his mower's transmission problem on Taryl. Does your transmission skip or jerk even with a new drive belt? It could be the problem Taryl addresses in the video causing your transmission not to drive smoothly (and sometimes not even drive at all).

Thanks a million for making an easy to understand set of instructions. My trans went completely dead after 224 hours. After disassembling, I found a pump piston spring ($.83) had disintegrated, and it's pieces gouged out the surface of the pump. Replaced the pistons and springs and the unit, and to my amazement today, and delight, it works! JD wanted $1300. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.

This is an amazing teardown and tutorial on the K46, which i get is very common and econonical. But I would Really Love to see you do this for the K66, which is Tuff Torq's lowest level of ground engaging transaxle. Definately a more permanent unit, stands up to pushing snow, pulling carts, hills... etc. (i have a "Johnny Bucket" on mine, which i am shocked Taryl hasn't had given to him... rediculously helpful). Anyway, if you could do something like this for the K66, I Know many, many guys (gals?) would greatly appreciate it. TT is a Great company for being so open to their customers and owners, really different than anyone in the mechanical world. This was a super helpful video even just for basic understanding and refurbs~ ☮️

Follow up: I took my transmission out and disassembled it with your video playing on my laptop by my work bench. I carefully took photos of it as I took it apart but I messed up BIG time when I put it back together!! I put mine back EXACTLY as you put yours together, but I DID NOT refer to my photos. I installed it and when I pushed the forward pedal, it went backwards!! Took it out, looked at my photos and saw that my transmission has the large end of the wedge shaped part opposite of yours. I reversed it and it now works perfectly. I would never had the confidence to take it apart without your video and help! By the way, my transmission is a K46BT3 and it works perfectly thanks to you!! Oh, and I also downloaded a parts breakdown from Tuff Torq by serial number and it also showed how mine was supposed to be assembled. Live and learn.

The Tuff Torq K46 transmission is very common in many riding mowers. Overall, it does a good job and doesn't have many problems. Avoid heavy pulling and steep grades for longer service life. Old oil and overheating, combined with neglect and abuse is often the problem.

Love your videos !! I’m a Canadian Grass Rat ! All you did was perfect…….just want to add my 2 cents…..had issues with these budget transmissions losing drive when hot under load……was due to oil getting thin when hot and hydro pump losing pressure from that forward reverse orifice you mentioned losing too much oil though it, due to the thin oil. A fix we found was drawing out oil which is actually equal to 10w30…..or John Deere low viscosity hydraulic oil and replacing it with John Deere Hygard oil or even straight 30 weight oil for customers with lots of hills and pulling lawn rollers. Also I think wear on spider gears is probably due to loss of wheel traction and excessive spinning through differential, maybe a snow blade , snow blower or hilly terrain issue. Love your videos !! Take care guys !! P/ S I use a plastic shower curtain rod decorative cover….for seal installs…….comes in a 4 ft length, really cheap and is Plastic and snaps over axle, crankshaft, whatever, you just snip off in length you need !!

I've rebuilt a few hundred of these K-46s. Taryl has covered all the best tips and tricks how to rebuild these hydrostatic transmissions. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ As noted, some K-46s do not have check balls for the forward / reverse pressure valves. I've found IDS models with the ball, often have broken springs or the spring have lost all tension from lack of oil or overheating. They are not available individually or in sets like they used too be Other tips I would suggest regard refinishing the main power body. On some early K-46s, use a 800 wet sandpaper (soaked in WD 40 or varsol) instead of 600 because the grade aluminum has varied over the years these units have been in production. 600 can be too coarse and will gum the sandpaper quickly, creating an uneven surface finish. The power and drive piston - cylinder internal springs are often broken in the drive cylinder. Unfortunately, the springs are not sold separately by tuff-torq. I do a three step polished for the cylinders, 600 to 800 to 1,000. The result is a mirror finish that reduces future wear and stress points that generate heat. Tuff Torque recommends changing the oil every 100 hours, which nobody does on 2006 and newer K-46s. Since I refinish the cylinders using 1000 grit wet sandpaper, I've gone 300 hours between oil changes if I install the update filter magnet kit. Everyone has different opinions on the right gear oil. John Deere claims all K-46s have lifetime oil (*Koff*). John Deere spec is 10W30 mineral oil. Tuff Torque specs synthetic 20-50W. I've tried every major brand of synthetic 20W50 along with a few racing oils. All are fine. I got really silly on my personal K-46 trans and got all the gears, including the main axle spyder gears and brake drive gear, heat treated using the same vendor that I use for my race car quick change axle gears. It's not a cheap, $175.00. But I've have no wear on any of the gear teeth on any of the assemblies. Pyrometer temperature inspection after an hour of mowing shows case temps dropped by 40 to 50° F from a peak of 230° F. The transmission has 1,900 hours total time. (1,600 since heat treated replacement gearset ) Is it really worth it.. up to you. It significantly reduces gear metal wear and thus extends the life of your filters and power / drive cylinders and the main power block surfaces. The only seals that I find wearing out are the axle end seals Taryl shows. You can find those at any wheel and bearing shop or Amazon. Look for 19 x 32 x 8 mm spring loaded double lip. You should be able to find them for $5.00 to $8.00 ea. The vent cap is the real pain in the ass, they are often cracked beyond reuse. You're gonna pay $12 bucks at a JD dealer. Gear sets used to be cheap from Tuff Torque. Not anymore... Highly recommended the magnet upgrade kit Taryl talks about if you plan to keep your tractor and expect 800+ hours. I've rebuilt one customer K-46 three times 1,700 hours total time. The third rebuild required very few parts (two used power cylinder springs) and new metal brake pads along with filter and axle seals. Happy mowing / snow blower riding! Taryl Dactal gets the real job done right!!! Though I would seriously stick a Hazmat warning label on Skippy.

Doug, wow rebuilt a few hundred! Do you mind telling us what the charge is to rebuild one of these. It has to be close to the price of a new replacement I would think with parts + labor .
@DougHanchard
@DougHanchard 2 жыл бұрын
@@luuk-out-below9804 These transmissions are quirky. Some need a zillion dollars in parts while others like Taryl Dactal has illustrated require very little. I never charged a set price for a rebuild because that's not fair to the customer. You are right, if you replaced all common wear / poor design parts, it would almost as much as a new K-46. Though new ones aren't cheap anymore. Price one out from your local JD Dealer. You'll be shocked. JD had serious problems with these K-46 transmissions because JD spec'd 10-30W mineral oil and used big rear tires that stressed the K-46 to the max. As soon as JD went to a really small diameter rear tire and (finally) synthetic oil, the problems with the K-46 dramatically decreased. Cub Cadet had the same issues as did Craftsman tractors that were big tires. Owners that run them in hot weather, with hills and have large areas to cut (more than 90 minutes) hurt durability in less than 150 hours. In other words, what breaks and needs replacing, is never the same.

From what I remember a lot of the John Deere Tuff Torque K46 hydrostatic transmissions were INCORRECTLY FILLED with generic 10w30 SAE Motor oil due to a mixup of recording the Tuff Torque TL-200 requirements data sheet (restrictions on shipping if they had been properly filled before leaving Tuff Torque factory for final install at John Deere factory so it was most cost effective to fill them right before sale) which was what happened. However the K46 isn’t exactly built for ease of oil changes and customers of John Deere tractors quickly were encountering loss of power, start and stopping/surging all from accelerated wear in the hydrostatic pump and motors. Forgot which models or years it applies to but if the magnets aren’t completely clogged with powdered friction gears material you can usually just drain the oil out run a little 5w50 full synthetic to flush and top off with the same fluid. In most cases of drop in power, slippage or surging the replacement to correct oil will resolve things

Awesome video, super helpful, love your channel, your knowledge, your experience....So awesome to have a teacher you've never met teach you exactly what you need to know! I have a few questions on this K46 tranny. 1) What do you think caused all that build up in the filter? 2) Since the differential gears and all the other gears seemed ok, was it just too many hours of use without having a fluid change? I don't know why John Deere tells customers the K46 is "unserviceable" when you clearly need to change the fluid. It's really not that hard...especially if you watch your videos on the K46!....and I was able to get my tranny running again because it had a leaking axle seal and only had 1/2 a quart of oil in there. 118 hours on the x300. 3) Do you think I should flush just flush the fluid at say 200 hours and call it a day if everything is running fine? Thanks for making this video.

Hello there, great videos. I thought adding a fine mesh screen on top of the grid screen on your stand would save from fishing out any tiny parts from the oil tub. Always learning when watching, at what hour rating do you suggest a trans service? 50 hrs? Cheers.

just think of all the extra oil that would have stayed in the transmission if you hadn't pulled the pump assembly off....just goes to show how thorough a cleaning these things need to get rid of all the contaminated/metal laden oil

WoW...my exact same tractor. Been baby'n it and changing the fluid every season. Flat mow and also pull my JD 7P cart/trailer with light loads. Some say you can upgrade the K46 with K57 parts to make it more powerful. Just bought a GT275 that needs a hood....LOL. It has a K70B in it. Now that seems HD compared to the L120.

Thanks for the education. I normally do not go for the old act stupid hick comedy but you let it slip at times that you are a wise man that knows what he is doing. You are thinking about what you are working on so much that at times you sound like a shop class teacher with all the education. Anyway, thanks for your honest teaching. You are not just fooling around. I have an old JD LT155 that would get hot and barely move. A good internal cleaning and fresh 20W50 synthetic oil got it back to work.

I try to keep the oil changed on them, even though they're a pain to remove to do it. It seems that using the 5w50 they recommend makes them work better than the 10w30 that most come factory filled with.

I used 5w50 mobil1 full synthetic. Mine seems to be happy. It’s really cold blooded in the cold though. If I just started the engine and it’s cold and at idle and let out the brake the oil in the pump can stall the right so it needs some extra rpm till it’s warm. This only happens when it’s freezing or below when the oil is extra thick.

I found a "service kit" on fleabay for one of my john deere tough torques. It had filter, seals, and orings. Then tough torque told me to use 5w50 synthetic oil. Got her working again.

That one is older. It has the steel wheel spacers on the axles. Newer uses plastic. I think the rear wheels being spaced and shimmed loose may contribute to the spider gear failure. The axle c-clip deal isn't select or shim fit and the axle and spiders have a bunch of movement normally that's probably aggravated if the wheels aren't shimmed right. Just a theory after having worked on two k46.

Taylor, not a comment but, a question. I just had the pumps rebuilt in my K-46 transmission. It moved real for about mowing approximately 3 acres then it started skipping, not moving either direction. Can you give me any ideas on what to do to it now? Thanks in advance. Your videos are awesome.

Only one detail to consider. Upon refilling with fresh fluid after a complete evacuation/ cleaning. I have seen others turn the shaft to work the pump some, essentially burping the system (much like a power steering flush/fill in a car). I mean, fluid level isn't going to be significantly lower not burping the system, but just to add.
