Ahead of the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California this weekend, I joined the Enve crew for a 230km jolly from San Francisco to Monterey, and the bike I rode was an interesting prospect for the cyclist seeking all the advances of the latest modern cycling technology.

That was my experience riding in California. Beautiful riding, great routes available. You just end up riding longer because of it, 4 hour rides were common, 100+ mile rides weekly and it never felt like too much....except at the top of Pine Flat Road, that was a lot, but worth it.

Wow, David Arthur in California! I got pulled in by the video title. So fun to see the big and almost continuous smile on your face. To top it off, you were riding in my "backyard" and I am happy to see you enjoying it so much. (Glad you survived the twisty, narrow, high speed, blind corner section just south of Pacifica before you got to the Devil's Slide Tunnel bypass! Also, looks like you rode on a week day since you were on the "city" side of the Golden Gate Bridge - the views are better on that side of the bridge imho. On weekends, they put bicycles on the "ocean" side of the bridge away from the pedestrians. Still a great view, but seeing SF as you cross the bridge is fantastic.). Hope you come back for more someday!

For me the biggest disadvantage is that it is mounted in the hub. I like having two wheelsets, one for road and one for gravel. That would mean I'd need to spend more money and get two classified hubs.

It’s going to depend on the specific frame and chainring size. Enve say the Fray can fit 38mm in 2x configuration, and 40mm in 1x configuration.

I can see going with the Classified rear hub vs front mech to retain the wider clearance of many bikes in 1x config vs 2x, but still get a really nice gear range for nearly any type of ride.

@kestralrider313
@kestralrider313 Ай бұрын
The classified setup is interesting and I'd be interested if it were possible to easily switch rear wheels to go from 1X EXPLR or EAGLE to 2X classified. I expect there's limits to the differences in chain lengths preventing going between classified and eagle, but wouldn't that be cool if a simple wheel change could take a 1X mullett to a 2X road/gravel in minutes? I'm sure there are technical reasons this doesn't work and why I've never seen someone do it.

If I’m correct, by using a 1X front and a Classified hub, one ca run 40mm tires on the Fray? Guessing that would be a benefit for Classified hubs, if you need the wider tire for more of an off-road use? Plus, no mud or dirt can jam in the front derailleur. We’ll done on the ride. Bike looks good, except for the Enve price!
@davidarthur
@davidarthur Ай бұрын
Yup true, Fray is only 40mm with no front mech, only 38mm with 2x, so one good benefit of this setup right there, thanks for pointing that out
@PedroPrego
@PedroPrego Ай бұрын
How much do they measure? 35c measure 35mm? I guess the classified allows you to get the 40mm clearance (instead of the 38mm) with the 2x road. That's the benefit

A trip down memory lane. I lived in San Francisco for 15 years. I used to go for a ride to Marin county over the GG bridge every Sunday with my bike club. What I miss most about CA is the weather and the terrain/landscape. A cyclist paradise. The non-cycling part was less appealing though.

i love these new stile of allroad bikes 40c clarence is so nice to have. option to make it to what ever. but the geometry is the king feature. I would see no diference in pace/speed in how i ride, maby faster caus i would feel more comfy on it. Not trying to make my long CAAD12 in to an allroad or any other racebike for that mater. Tho i would still own other bikes to fill in the gaps.

got a question about handling, specifically at higher speeds (35mph+); will running, say 35mm tires, compared to say 30mm tires, make this (or any other bike) feel noticeably 'calmer' at high speeds? trying to decide whether the extra weight of a fatter road tire is worth it on my bike which accepts max 40mm tires (which I'd obviously never run for road riding). I miss beautiful Cali and the epic riding there.

Perhaps those who rely on Fox News for their world view feel that way the most? Even if you live in the inner part of a "big" city in CA, it's usually pretty easy to get to some fantastic part either inside or outside the city limits. Even then, the inner cities have their beautiful, human dimension to them - you just gotta open your eyes and see the hard-working, sincere, and friendly store clerk, the amazing ethnic restaurant, the warehouse with the microbrewery...

I understand the need , interest and overall appetite for all road, do it all bikes but there is no future for them, after a while they turn into an old BMW air cooled motorcycle, smart design and engineering, great performance, comfort, longevity, does everything well, hard to fault and impossible to love. There is a reason why geometry plays such a big role in the industry, there is no substitute for dedicate, specialized bikes, had the all road bikes been true than there is no better bike than Ritchey Swiss Cross. That bike is the gold standerd for do it all from the past, a bike that reshaped the industry .
