One thing about the Righteous Brothers when they recorded a song, they ‘owned’ the song, no matter who followed them with their own cover.

That song says a lot about his ability to hypnotize you, his voice is so unique and dreamy magic that melts through your heart.... All the more, for posting these two great legends...........

The song compares love to the growing-and-receding tide of the ocean. And the song starts low and slow, then builds like the tide, then goes out again, then rises again at the end. Beautiful song.

Bobbie was an unusually gifted tenor! It was a God given talent that very few could reach! I am 77 years old, so I heard this music as a teenager! And I love it now even more than then! Nobody like Bobby Hatfield!!! He died of a Cocaine overdose with his bad heart. It was really sad.

@@sandraschauf5862 I don't think it was actually an overdose as such, deliberate. He died because he wasn't used to the drug and he had a really advanced heart condition which no one knew about. Bill said he thought Bobby took the cocaine to try and energise himself for the show because he felt so bad. The Angels needed him in their heavenly choir, there'll never be another voice, with that amount of soul and emotion again, imo.

@@rubydazzler I have read comments from people that knew Bobby and said he was a cokehead. It may not have been deliberate, but he was addicted to cocaine which contributed to his heart condition. He evidently didn't go to the Doctor or he would probably wouldn't have passed away at that point. They would have put a stent in and he would have lived longer. But drugs will always kill, eventually. I was very saddened to hear that he was an addict. I just don't understand people who have everything and yet they feel the need to get high and then become addicted.

@@sandraschauf5862 I bow to your superior knowledge. I'm probably at fault in not wishing to believe my idols can have feet of clay. Maybe the years of being undervalued, known as 'the other brother' and being overshadowed by Bill, when he was so much more, led to him trying and becoming dependent on cocaine for validation? We'll never know now. People trying to put him down won't change my opinion though, he was an earth-angel, a siren, given that amazing voice to engage us all. Love and light.

@@rubydazzler It doesn't change my feelings about Bobby Hatfield. I actually feel sorry for him. He was very talented. I am not putting him down, I am only speaking the truth. Why can't people speak the truth without assuming that they are putting them down. My brother got hooked on drugs too and went to prison for it. I felt sorry for him also. But he came to know The Lord while he was in prison so it was a blessing. Deception is from the Devil. And I am not arguing with your feelings or opinion. I like to know the truth about people and things. I don't like to hide behind a mask. I miss Bobby Hatfield and I certainly believe he was more talented than Bill. I am 73 years old and they were popular when I was in High School. I always liked them always will. Bobby had a beautiful voice that can't be duplicated.

Another masterpiece by Bobby Hatfield. Doesn’t get the attention like Unchained Melody but is right up there with it. Thx for being one of the few reactors that play it. I’m still with you with all the problems you’ve had. Keep going and playing the great classics

I think he was a modern day siren. I always say if he'd sat on rocks singing, ocean going liners would have beached themselves to listen. Everyone, man or woman, just falls in love at the first 'whoa, my love' ...

@@rubydazzler I've used that same term myself to describe him a number of times. I love, love "Unchained", but "Ebb Tide" (sung by Bobby) is my favorite solo. The first time I heard it, my mom was playing it on the stereo. His voice literally stopped me in my tracks and I asked, "who is THAT?" She said, "It's the Righteous Brothers. Bobby H. is doing a solo - I've played them before; you know them". I said, "I know, but, man....!!" Anyway, even though I was a young teen deep into rock, I was in love from that moment! Much more than you wanted to know, I'm sure - sorry!

@@gibsongirl2100 I have one beef with Ebb Tide, it's just not long enough! I could listen to Bobby endlessly. I recently discovered What's the Matter Baby (cover of a Timi Yuro original) and I love that one too, although it's not romantic, in fact the very opposite.

I feel sad too, for this younger generation. Music has changed so much and not for the better. Most music today sounds same, same. Very little melody, orchestration and soul. Roy Orbison is also a great singer from the same era. I believe that kids today would appreciate something different similar to the same era as the Righteous Brothers or some Motown music. I am 73 years old and when my three girls were growing up we had a juke box in our house. My girls still love the music from the 60's and 70's. The Righteous Brothers, (Blue Eyed Soul) were in a league of their own.

You are 100% correct about where music is going. These old songs are about a much simpler time. Everything today is dark, negative and angry. I'll take the simpler time thank you. As you go back and dig into the oldies there is SO MUCH to enjoy. All the greats. The Righteous Brothers of course, Jay Black and the Americans, Gene Pitney, Patsy Cline, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Gary Pucket and the Union Gap. The list is endless.

The legend, Bobby Hatfield passed away in 2003. His “Unchained Melody” is featured in the movie, “Ghost.” Bill Medley is still alive.

Ebb Tide was not played as much on the radio and not sure why that was but I love this song and the words are very romantic. The softness lulls you in then BOOM you get the crescendo. I might be old but I feel sorry for all those that missed the life that brought these tunes to us in the fifties , sixties and on to the second star on the right. I was driving down Pacific Coast Hwy in Long Beach California when they announced Bobby had passed on, girl, I cried. Peace !

Such a great song by Bobby Hatfield. It was written in 1953 I believe. If you want to hear something incredible ,listen to Sheriff and the song is called When I'm with you. The singer holds the world record for holding the longest note.

You should hear Bobby sing My Prayer (react to it lol) or even For Your Love or For Sentimental Reasons. Bobby was the best and the life and soul of the Righteous Brothers. There will never be another like him. Thank you for doing Ebb Tide. Oh, and you should listen to Stay With Me by Bobby if you ever have the chance!

Dynamics and Great music just go together ... it creates emotion ... They also went back and covered the music of their parents, EBB TIDE was done by the Platters and Frank Sinatra before the Righteous Bros. ... White Cliffs Of Dover was a WW II era song ... and they did religious songs like "He" and " I Believe For Every Drop Of Rain"

I LOVE the Righteous Brothers, but THIS IS MY FAVORITE of all the beautiful songs they sang. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!!!! Gives me chills. Reminds me of my late husband and my marriage and relationship. 😍😍😍😍.I always tell my grandchildren that I feel so sorry for them because they don't know what good music is, and I tell my 25-year-old daughter I feel sorry for her contemporaries because they don't know what good music is and the reason why they are so angry is because of rap and hip hop music. It makes me turn into the Incredible Hulk so I think it has the same effect on people. JMHO.

Try righteous bros.and the Blossoms duo,song is titled Night time is the right time. Great fun live video. Also a song called Just once in my life. You won't be disappointed.

Ebbtide is a bobby Hatfield solo and like all of Bobby Hatfield songs. They have heart and soul and a richness of voice and range that is incomparable.

They did cover a lot of old songs. Songs like ebb tide, white cliffs of Dover and unchained melody. They may have been covers but when they recorded a song it became theirs and in my mind they turned them into something completely different that was never bettered.

Dear Jayy, I appreciate your comment about the way music has changed and not necessarily for the good. Because you aware, you are in a very special place to make changes and I hope you will. As you make those changes I’d like to make you to know that EBB is a word. It means movement of the tide out to see. Ebb is the tidewater moving away from the land. It also means to recede: the word flow is it’s opposite or coming in. This is how we get the saying, “Ebb and Flow,” or back and forth. You keep my faith alive in the younger generation. Never has there been a song more evocative of the word CLIMAX. The Patters did a beautiful job with this song, but, Bobby with Phil Spector made it so intensely, powerfully, visceral that it blew all previous versions away and gave the song it's definition. An analog for sex between lovers. Nobody before or since has done it better.

This is another beautiful classic by Bobby Hatfield, who performed the 1965 live performance of Unchained Melody--I don't know of anyone else who could match him. That's why the younger generations are still being wowed by him. Of course, he has many beautiful solos on You Tube you should check out--more beautiful love songs, inspirational ones, rock and doo wop. Enjoy !! Cathy

Thank God the Righteous Bros is part our shared Americana. Beautiful music us meant to he shared....and to inspire. The black community has awesome romantic acts: The Drifters, the Platters, the Four Tops, and many many more. They probably inspired blue eyed soul.

I have adored the Righteous Brothers since I was in my early teens. There is one voice that I think comes close to matching Bobby Hatfield, 'cause he can do the same notes and hold 'em: Austin Brown with Home Free. They're an a capella group ... everything is their voices.
