A shy smile, a nod of acknowledgement to the live audience. Everyone stays seated out of respect to those behind them. Dress code was casual, modern, clean and the singer’s code of professionalism off the charts. Hair and cleanliness in word and deed perfect. Love words without rap culture left people loving others. And a smile and slight bow of the head to the audience when it was finished.

No one has ever done this classic song better then the late great Bobby Hatfield of 'The Righteous Brothers.' This was done live in 1965 on the Andy Williams Show. This is what a trained tenor voice sounds like knowing when to go high falsetto, and when to bring it down. The song was written for a prison movie titled 'Unchained' 1955. It was written on prisoners point of view. knowing they will spend years alone in their cells for a long time. Missing the touch of their loved one, and that for a prisoner time does go by so slowly, and time could do so much. It can force one to go mad, or can make them remorseful and regretful for their actions. And just do the time and wait for the day they get out. Great reaction to one of the greatest live performance's ever...

One take, live and his parents were in the audience, on The Andy Williams Show. So he had a large TV audience. So not much pressure to get it right.... Bobby's voice was one of a kind, a 4 octave range and he sang with seemingly no effort at all. To top it off, it was a beautiful arrangement.

I loved your reaction and your genuine appreciation for this magnificent work of art. In the sixties, when they played Righteous Brother Bobby's rendition of Unchained Melody, people cried. It was so poignant for so many people because of the war in Viet Nam. Young hearts yearning...and not just women cried. Hard, trained, hard minded, elite combat units (soldiers). After safe return to base you do the shave, shower and probably mess for a meal that's hot and served on dishes. Later, at the club (beer tent), where things can get boisterous this song played and men listened and soon it went quiet.

Bobby Hatfield, RIP, is one half of the duo, The Righteous Brothers. As you can see, Bobby was a tenor and performed this song as a solo. The other half of the duo, the deeper-voiced baritone, Bill Medley, sings with Bobby in other songs, such as "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' " and "Soul and Inspiration." If you want to hear more of them, please react to those songs.

Bobby Hatfield live performance. The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965: Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song." * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof." Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.😊

For a deeper perspective of the lyrics, the song was originally written for a movie called "the prisoner". The husband is serving a long sentence and wrote this in a letter to his young wife who was having an affair with one of the prison guards and looking to leave the country with him. Makes the song so much more emotional in its meaning. With that context in mind listen to the song again, while he may be chains his love for her is not, hence unchained melody.

The song was written between 1954 and 1955. In 1955 there were 4 versions by 4 separate artist. When the Righteous Brothers got this it's been theirs, well more Bobby Hatfield's; his version is the standard that many are compared to. Both Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley had songs in US Films, Bobby's unchained Medley appeared in Ghost with Demi Moore Whoopi Goldberg, and Patrick Swayze and Bill Medley's sang Time of my life with Jennifer Warnes, Starring Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey and Cynthia Rhodes ( hell of a soundtrack ) On this live performance his Mother ( possibly dad ) is in the audience. At the end he bites his lip as he knows he nailed this song. There are thousands of covers of this song, sung by Elvis, Robson and Jerome many, many others many come close, but none beat Bobby's rendition. Basic history: from Wikipedia: They began performing together in 1962 in the Los Angeles area as part of a five-member group called the Paramours . In 1964 music producer Phil Spector came across the Righteous Brothers when they performed in a show at the Cow Palace in Daly City, CA. where one of Spector's acts, The Ronettes, was also appearing. The rest is history. "Unchained Melody" is a 1955 song with music by Alex North and lyrics by Hy Zaret. North wrote the music as a theme for the little-known prison film Unchained (January 1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century, most notably by the Righteous Brothers. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of "Unchained Melody" have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages. Of the hundreds of recordings made, the Righteous Brothers'( Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley ) version in July 1965, with a solo by Bobby Hatfield, became the jukebox standard after its release. Hatfield changed the melody in the final verse and many subsequent covers of the song are based on his version. The Righteous Brothers recording achieved a second round of great popularity when it was featured in the film Ghost in 1990. In 2004, it was Number 27 on AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema.
