I'm 73 yrs old and I will never forget when Bobby sang this song live on the Andy Williams show in 1965. He was so handsome and I fell in love with him. I was only 15 years old but I know every teenager fell in love him. Such a handsome guy and his voice was so awesome! RIP Bobby! We miss your beautful voice!

No one has ever done this classic song better then the late great Bobby Hatfield of 'The Righteous Brothers.' This was done live in 1965 on the Andy Williams Show. This is what a trained tenor voice sounds like knowing when to go high falsetto, and when to bring it down. The song was written for a prison movie titled 'Unchained' 1955. It was written on prisoners point of view. knowing they will spend years alone in their cells for a long time. Missing the touch of their loved one, and that for a prisoner time does go by so slowly, and time could do so much. It can force one to go mad, or can make them remorseful and regretful for their actions. And just do the time and wait for the day they get out. Great reaction to one of the greatest live performance's ever...

We were in Hollywood in March of '65 and had won tickets to see Bobby Hatfield at Radio Recorders, there were less than 100 people in the audience. My girlfriend started crying and said she loved Bobby. I had NEVER seen anybody since that has stuck with me like his performance. EVERY time I watch this, I think of her...and him.

I'm so happy to hear another generation enjoying the music I grew up to. Bobby Hatfield was very nervous when this was taped - his mother and father were in the audience and he still did a fabulous job.

I loved your reaction and your genuine appreciation for this magnificent work of art. In the sixties, when they played Righteous Brother Bobby's rendition of Unchained Melody, people cried. It was so poignant for so many people because of the war in Viet Nam. Young hearts yearning...and not just women cried. Hard, trained, hard minded, elite combat units (soldiers). After safe return to base you do the shave,shower and probably mess for a meal that's hot and served on dishes. Later, at the club (beer tent), where things can get boisterous this song played and men listened and soon it went quiet.

One take, live and his parents were in the audience, on The Andy Williams Show. So he had a large TV audience. So not much pressure to get it right.... Bobby's voice was one of a kind, a 4 octave range and he sang with seemingly no effort at all. To top it off, it was a beautiful arrangement.

The Andy Williams Show- Episode #4.5 Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965: Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song. *In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63. The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side. * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. Try the other Righteous Brothers singer Bill Medley singing Brown Eyed Woman. They were both so good.

For a deeper perspective of the lyrics, the song was originally written for a movie called "the prisoner". The husband is serving a long sentence and wrote this in a letter to his young wife who was having an affair with one of the prison guards and looking to leave the country with him. Makes the song so much more emotional in its meaning. With that context in mind listen to the song again, while he may be chains his love for her is not, hence unchained melody.

I sang this to my wife at our wedding in 1983. She, however she said I murdered it. I'm guessing it's not a song for a baritone, she told me I was of better sticking to my drumming. I thought it was an appropriate song as I was in the Royal Marine Commandos, I had returned from the Falkland Islands when I proposed, and now was shipping out to Sierra Leone two days later, so much for my attempt at being romantic. On the upside she liked me in my Uniform.
