I climbed 1,000,000 feet in 2015 in only 10 months (legitimate gain no iPhone Strava app or Elevation Correction which gives you more gain). I repeated 1M feet of climbing in 2016 and 2018 and 2019 I have also Everested 9X -- 29,029 feet in one single ride #everesting .
I currently hold the record for the shortest distance Everest in North and South America 29,200 feet in 78 miles.
I have been named a legendary Ultra Cyclist- a title I consistently work hard to live up to because of what it means in the small ultra cycling community.
I completed 2- Person Race Across America (RAAM) in 2007. I have finished the Furnace Creek 508 SOLO (508 miles 35,000 feet of climbing non-stop race) six consecutive years in 2006, 2007 (Fixed Gear) 2008, 2009, 2010 2011, then came back in 2013 (tandem) and 2014 (Tandem) 2015 (tandem) and 2017 as a Two Person Mixed setting the course record with Lori Hoechlin. A total of 11 Furnace Creek/Silver State 508 finishes with a PR of 28 hours 52 minutes. I was inducted in the Furnace Creek 508 Hall of Fame class of 2011.

And now that you read all of that - I am also just an everyday Joe, just like you. I own a bike shop work and 60 hours a week, have a family, have a coaching business and try to do ultra events on limited training time. I’ve never been a professional cyclist. Wow 30 day trial! That's cool! In a perfect world you should have all the rim depths and change them out based on the ride/race/event or weather conditions. I have low profile, 38mm, 46mm, 60mm and several other wheels. It's another reason why I have no desire to switch to disc brakes I mean switching to discs is NOT an upgrade anyway but that's just my opinion.

Hi George, Had the Hed Jet 6 rear and Jet 4 front Clydesdale build, too stiff and needed Valve extender for rear wheel. Also rear wheel needed to be static balanced to get rid of vibration from long stem at high speeds. Good wheelset for racing, but happy to have sold that bike and back on 30mm alloy wheels, simple 40mm stem tubes happy days:) Thank you for this video. Subbed👍

Hello NP - are you a heavier rider? Clydesdale 24/28 build can be quite stout for a light to medium weight rider. Yes it’s a nuisance to have to keep track of all the different valve stem lengths in your tool kit! 😂 right now I carry 80 mm so 1. I can service any of my wheels on the road then swap out to the appropriate length when I get home (OCD 😂) 2. I can give a tube to just about 80% of the riders stranded on the side of the road.

@@SeeYouUpTheRoad Hi George. Your video just popped up in my feed. I've been watching a few videos lately about rim depth so I guess KZfaq's algorithm picked up on it. I'm riding a 2020 Giant TCR SL2 with stock rims ー my first road bike ー and I'm considering a change in wheels. The local terrain is fairly hilly and wind is a factor especially in the colder months. Lots of factors at play.

@@woodsdavid2887 ah yes KZfaq picked up on your search terms. Thank You for the feedback. For hilly terrain and windy conditions I prefer to stay below 40 mm rim depth. I weigh 68 kg (150 lbs). I might have mentioned in the video I do a lot of things while on the go, no-handed. I do not like to always have my hands glued to the handlebar. That’s why I like a shallower rim depth than most riders. I also think people like to put deep section wheels on their bike , 60 mm and above, because of the aesthetics. They want the bike to look “pro”. But then they are fighting those high dollar, inappropriately deep, and dare I say eye-sore wheels, in the crosswinds. They regret their purchase but they don’t have the balls to admit they screwed up. They just keep saying “these wheels are awesome! They are so fast” at the coffee shop. Thanks for watching. You brought up a point at 11:45 about getting assistance from other cyclists when you're obviously in trouble. You remember Pittsburgh? Well these people don't care about helping out someone they see walking down the road pushing their bike and walking in cycling shoes with cleats. I have been stuck at least five times that I remember right up the bike path from where you did your video at the rental shop, walking my bike and asking other cyclists if they had any C02 or a pump, I had a tube but my C02 failed from a poorly designed inflater, and I kept getting the same answer from everyone. Nobody would help. I don't carry C02 anymore because you only get one shot, so I now have a Silca frame pump. At least I won't run out of air anymore and if I see someone in need I can help. I also carry patches just so I have that option if they didn't have a spare tube. I have given up my spare tube before on group rides and it made me feel good to get someone rolling again and all I ever said to any of them is pay it forward. I wish they never would have invented C02 because it has made a lot of cyclist more selfish. Rant over, sorry to interrupt.

I stopped watching GCN. They are just promoting and marketing brands. I found this channel very informative. I ride my road bike in Scottish countryside. It’s windy and I face very often strong cross wind. I have shallow aluminium wheel but my local cycle shop wants me to buy deeper carbon wheels. What’s the effect of cross wind on deeper and shallow rims?
@SeeYouUpTheRoad
@SeeYouUpTheRoad 2 ай бұрын
Welcome aboard! I generally don’t like deep section wheels when it’s windy unless I’m racing and race day is race day. I almost always ride low profile wheels. Riding deep carbon wheels is kind of dumb in my opinion especially since the braking is terrible when dry and downright dangerous when wet. My deep wheels are HED Jet black alloy brake track with carbon fairings.

One of the annoying practicalities of having to carry 80mm valve stem tubes is the amount of room they take up in your saddle bag or jersey pocket, especially on a longer ride when typically you may like to take 3 'just in case'.
@SeeYouUpTheRoad
@SeeYouUpTheRoad Жыл бұрын
I know! I totally agree! But I think I mentioned it in this video, but I know in others, I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve run up on a rider who doesn’t have a tube with a long enough valve stem and luckily enough I’m carrying an 80mm tube, although to be honest, it has happened to me where I haven’t had the correct tubes in my tool bag because I have so many different bikes with so many different wheel with different rim depths 😖🤣

Hi. Great video. I have mavic aksium aluminum wheels and I ride with gator skin clinchers. The mavics have zero material between the rim and spokes. Would I notice a difference in speed if I got an additional set of wheels like the HED ones and set them up as tubeless? I am thinking these would be good for faster group rides or longer rides.
@SeeYouUpTheRoad
@SeeYouUpTheRoad 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Seth thanks for watching please be more specific when you say the “HED ones” HED makes many rim depths. Keep in mind two things are at play 1. Rolling resistance - if you were riding gator skin tires you will never go fast. Those tires have terrible rolling resistance! Terrible grip and terrible performance overall. 2. Tire construction, tire pressure and the actual tire itself will make a big difference in rolling resistance. Of course aerodynamics come into play as well.

@@SeeYouUpTheRoad Thanks. Did not know that about gatorskins. I was talking about the ardennes rims in the video. I guess my thinking is to have a more areo set up for group rides and the gatorskins for when I am alone and want to avoid punctures.
@SeeYouUpTheRoad
@SeeYouUpTheRoad 2 жыл бұрын
@@sethleibowitz2906 why are you afraid of punctures? Why? Gatorskins are terrible tires please don’t ride them. Ride a high performance for better ride quality, better performance and less rolling resistance. It kills me when people pay $3k,4k,$8,000 on a bike and then destroy all the engineering put into the bike because someone puts $50.00 Gatorskins on the bike. I ride 10,000 miles per year ride high performance tires and get maybe 1 or 2 flats per year. Why are you afraid of punctures? Yes I’m asking again. The Ardennes are not aero in the least. Maybe look at the HED RC4 I did a video on those. The Gatorskins ranks nearly at the bottom of these 70 + tires tested www.bicyclerollingresistance.com/road-bike-reviews

How much faster can one be when sprinting at around 53kph on 35mm wheels then switches into deep-section wheels?
@SeeYouUpTheRoad
@SeeYouUpTheRoad 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t say all that much faster. The assumption is you’re out of the saddle sprinting and your head, shoulders and body create more aerodynamic drag that can not be overcome by deepening the wheels’s rim depth. Just a guess… the benefit of deeper wheels would be realized BEFORE the sprint when you are in the seated position and much more aero. Also just a guess …
