What wheel depth do you use? 🤔

ive just got a set of vision 81mm and already had a set of the 55's. Im small and pretty light so for Copenhagen as it could be windy i was going to mix with the 81 on the back and 55 on the front, hoping not to get blown into the sea...

55mm on my roadbike and recently bought a Tri bike with 88mm in front and back, that depth on the front is crazy at wind 😄

62/80mm that came along with my Canyon Speedmax. Thinking of a 50mm front wheel when riding on Lanzarote with strong winds...

I bought some "crazy" 88mm deep wheels, and as I'm 95kg, even strong gusts don't cause an issue.

This week I got overtaken buy a guy on training wheels 😆, and his front wheel was on backwards (saw after the race) (his qr was on the wrong side and his tire was orating the wrong way). A 77 and a disc (me) wheel can only do so much for you haha.

Rocking 88mm that I run for everything. Full disc rear would be nice but hard to justify the investment, I’m 88KG’s so not allot of issue controlling even in strong winds.

TT's or if your job is to ride on the front all day, deep section. For everything else, shallow section.

Engineer here with some experience in aerodynamics. I’d like to see some actual data on the aero advantage of deeper wheels. I suspect the improvement in drag is very marginal and a tiny fraction of the aero drag of the rider.

I saw somewhere that going from standard box section to 30-40mm deep gets the best gains. After that it becomes marginal.

back in late april i yolo n bought 77/86mm wheelset for my roadbike(tri mods)😂 bike came with 25/25 alu. now my aluminium tcr looks more potent 😍🚴‍♂️💨(it got featured on gcn bikevault ep284). did std distance DU race, felt easier to hold speed. looking forward to pto race in aug🙏

45 at the front and 65 on the rear. I live in a rather windy area so this is good enough for me and my chance of survival 😂😅

Disc wheel cover from EZ gains placed over my 50mm wheels - cheaper (£120) and lighter than a disc wheel and about 98% of the aero gains

So the weight difference between the dt swiss arc 1100 50mm and the disc is less than 300g, maybe you ride with one less waterbottle and use the aidstation?

I sill use the rims the bike came with. My question I contemplating now is not wheel depth but tire width. I'm think of going to a larger width from a 25 mm. I wonder if that makes a difference.
@andrewmcalister3462
@andrewmcalister3462 Жыл бұрын
From an aerodynamic perspective, you want the tire to be slightly narrower than the external rim width. Some people compromise by running a narrower tire on the front, and a wider tire on the rear where the air is already disturbed, and you will get more of a comfort benefit because of weight distribution.

So if you’ve got deep section wheels and a disc wheel (assuming same brand on wheels and same size cassette), would you need to adjust the gears if swapping between them? I ask, because I’m looking at getting a Zipp Super 9, to compliment my Zipp 808’s, and would be running the same gear ratios and cassette, and worried about our wonderful UK weather being so changeable/swapping out wheels at short notice.
@dbk81
