The headset on my ADHX was just getting notchy, binding on the Deda DCR with Deda Superbox Stem. I took it apart, without disconnecting any of the brake cable fittings, and discovered that on top of the bearing was a ceramic spacer with steel shims on top of that. It was the steel shims which were rusted and binding. Bearings were fine. I cleaned and sanded off the rust and regreased everything and reassembled. I also stuffed foam strips (folded over) into the bottom of the DCR stem where water ingresses where the cables enter the stem. I should have thought of filling in those open spaces sooner, as they direct moisture and water directly into the bearing/spacer area on top of the headset.

Every bike, literally every bike you purchase requires thorough checking. No matter the source. Lubrication may be missing where it should be. Screws may be loose or overtightened. Threads may be damaged or left ungreased during initial assembly. Some parts like for example break or derailleur lines have to settle in before long and trouble free use. A newly purchased bike requires a service right after the purchase and equally importantly another inspection after about 500km again.

What do we have here: a delaminating crank, batterie ballast for derailleurs, ballast brakes and therefore a lousily stiff and heavy frame, annoyingly loud and mechanically inferior back hub ratchet, too wide tires, too small and useless outer cassette cog (11T). It's all as heavy and uncomfortable as a grocery store bike. The guy is blaming that on the saddle and supposedly too narrow tires, instead of the whole bike. That's a classic. As a bonus on top, you get plenty of irreplaceable proprietary solutions and a nice price tag in the range of a good used car. Yes: Go tubeless to make it fully marketing BS sucker compliant.

It's a bike build for speed. You should upgrade to 23mm tires if you want to go fast. Never ever buy in to the GCN class BS that wider tiers are more "aero".
@SeeYouUpTheRoad3 сағат бұрын
oh I wouldn't ever believe GCN saying they are more aero. But my 195 lb customer (89kg) would really enjoy the comfort moving from 28m Gatorskins (god awful tires) to 30mm 5000 STR tubeless and lower pressure. That's our goal. He is as aero as a house rolling down the street 🤣 Since 87% of aerodynamics come from the rider we can be sure we don't care about the bike's aero claims or anything GCN says 🤣🤣

Unfortunately a lot of local bike shops massively overcharge. Small or large doesn't matter. The best bike store in my city (Wellington, New Zealand) is a chain, "Evo NZ." They're polite and knowledgable mountain and gravel bikers. I ride fixed and urban, but they can order parts in. That entirely backwards handlebar issue is strange, did they not think it over twice when the logos ended up upside diwn and backwards? Lol.

@SeeYouUpTheRoad2 күн бұрын
@@draugmithrin I’m right-handed also but I’ve trained my left hand to modulate my front brake very well. The front brake is the most powerful and useful brake as you know. I primarily brake with my front brake in all situations. Of course we have a ton of traffic lights here (I wish we had roundabouts) in the states. I brake with my left hand drink with my right and come to a complete stop. AND since it’s all I’ve ever known there is no issue. I’m 58 and riding bikes since I was 4 years old 😂

I tried the Salsa Woodchipper with 25 flair, the 46cm width. I hated it. I tried on my next build and hated it on that one too. I think the radical flair just doesn’t fit with me, nor the 46cm width. I also think that the wider width and more flair just drops me too close to my front tire. Obviously on climbs it’s not an issue but on descents it’s not a good riding position for me anyway. Now on my more trail purpose gravel bike I have the Whiskey Parts Spano bar with 20 flair. I also went down to 44cm. I think it is pretty much,personal preference on these micro details but for me I like to be more upright when I descend trails but road don’t mind getting lower but I don’t think really wide is just not for me.

Can you sometime do a real world comparison between the Outback and the Ritchey Ascent? If you took a 100mi/10K+ elevation ride in the SoCal Sierras with a mix of 70-80% gravel fire roads, and 20-30% non-technical single track, occasional deep ruts, some deep sand but not full MTB terrain, which would you choose? Looking forward to that video!
@SeeYouUpTheRoad2 күн бұрын
Hello zoufy - I have never ridden an Ascent. I don't think I will ever own one either. I don't like riding dirt/gravel or MTB'ing. Given a full day off I would rather ride my road bike then go in the dirt. I guess I would probably lean more towards an Outback for the course described since it is closer to my road bike than an Ascent, but I'm not sure. I don't feel I am the right person to do a video on this topic.
@zoufyj185Күн бұрын
@@SeeYouUpTheRoad I hear you, but sometimes you just gotta have a long day without traffic worries! My Ritchey breakaway cross is serving my off-pavement needs but tires are limited to 38-40mm and canti brakes still work but I'm wondering how bigger tires and disc brakes might expand my options, maybe even sleeping under the stars once in a while... 🌠 Looking hard at the Outback, but maybe it's too close in real world function to my Ritchey cross bike which is kind of a do-everything swiss army knife bike.
@SeeYouUpTheRoadКүн бұрын
this is a good conversation to have. The 2 times I’ve ridden the Outback it feels more like an all day bike. It doesn’t feel as zippy as my Swiss Cross Canti. So I’m guessing if I’m not racing and I’m packing extra gear the Outback makes more sense and it’s h more stable. If I’m racing and I can get away with riding narrower tires like 36’s then the Swiss Cross would get the nod. Have you considered Paul Mini Motos for your SC? They are amazing!
