We dive deep into Rings of Power Episode 5: Partings and discuss the references to Tolkien's lore from the books. I try to explain the problems with this Mithril origin story (Song of the Roots of Hithaeglir). Also we talk about the Stranger aka Meteor Man, Halbrand, the Cultists and Adar. And who might be Sauron. Also some theories on Theo's sword. First part of teh video is my review and critique though.

*Gil-galad:* _Did the dwarves find mithril?_ *Elrond:* _I've sworn an oath not to talk about that._ Well done Elrond in keeping your oath. And in the next scene with Celebrimbor he waves around the probe of mithril he's got from Durin. I really like the scene in the last episode in which Durin asked Elrond to swear on the stone never to talk about it. But now its impact is totally destroyed because Elrond's breaking the oath has no consequences. On the contrary, Elrond and Durin are best buddies. This is not _lazy writing,_ but _awful writing_ which makes me banging my head on my desk.

I think Elrond figured out that Gil-galad knew already and he did not tell the details about what the Dwarves do. And he did not tell Celebrimbor where hi got this Mithril. he needed confirmation that it has the properties Gil-galad expects. But I agree, it written a bit wonky or scenes are missing.

@@cejannuzi It seems so Gil-galad knew all about the mithril from the start and conspired with Celebrimbor to get Elrond into the position to renew his friendship with Durin. Why do they keep Elrond in the dark in the first place? Furthermore, what's about Elrond's initial intend to get the Dwarves helping out building the furnace? We've never seen him talking about this to Durin, Elrond always stated it's all about the renewal of their old friendship. That was not really honest of him in the first place. He should have told Durin so in his confession, but he didn't. His highly moral emphasised speech to Gil-galad doesn't fit to his actions. That makes his words meaningless kitsch. We, as an audience, are supposed to believe in the integrity of his character but it is not reflected in his acts. But anyway, Elrond and Durin have enough time to talk whilst walking the ~1000 kilometers(?) from Lindon to Khazad-dûm guarding the Elves carrying this stupid table.

This isn't a Tolkien project. It's a weird collection of bad, non-sensical dialogue, forced contrivances, unlikeable characters, and made up lore. If I were a show runner, I'd be embarrassed knowing my product was supposed to provide employment to cast and crew for five years. Sadly, cast and crew will only fulfill two of those five contract years. Hubris hurts.

There is no good acting in this show? The actress of Nori? Poppy? Elrond? Durin? Disa? Míriel? I mean you don't need to like their characters, but I don't understand why one would say their acting is not even halfway decent. Can you elaborate? The writing of the Elrond and Dwarves arc is imo pretty decent. It explores some themes and lore and mostly progress the story further by interaction and dialogue (relying on "fast travel" a side). Also Elrond has to dance on a thin line between duty and friendship and that makes it pretty interesting. So i would say: yes at least that arc is decently written. It's not the best of the best, but imo also not terrible.

The way I'm looking at this series is as a generic fantasy show but we just happen to have some basic character/location info from the start. We know orcs/Sauron are bad, we know the relationships between some people already. We know many of the locations and their significance. Thinking of it like this, it's kind of just, meh. Much as I respect Chris and his channel but the books are Tolkien there is a big difference between adapting for film as Jackson who had a genuine love and respect for his work and Amazon driving a bulldozer through it,replacing it with poor writing and characterization,it is indeed Tolkien in name only,naming all the other faults would just take too long.The silmaril /mithril nonsense and Galadriel schooling Numanoreans including the royal guard and teaching them how to fight,apparently being responsible for their travel to middle earth is just a couple of examples of the lore being trampled but for me that's it,I'm done.

Yeah, the only reason I was hanging on was the Elrond/Durin story, and the disregard for oath-breaking, and the monumentally stupid mithril origin story in this episode are the final nail in the coffin for me. I don't need stories that give me a lore-headache every single episode. Even if they are spinning this as something that Annatar was feeding to Gil-galad, he should NEVER have fallen for something that monumentally stupid, and most certainly should never have demanded that Elrond break an oath in service to that ridiculous fantasy within a fantasy. Galadriel was not supposed to be the ONLY one of the senior elves to see through Annatar and at least recognize ill intent.

I'm liking Durin and his story at least a bit The relationship between him and Elrond is somwhat interesting and the actors work well together onscreen. For me, sadly though, almost everything else is moving from bad to terrible. Just the tip of the iceberg: Gil-Galad - unpleasant manipulator and encourages oathbreaking. Who would 'sadly sing' of this guy? Also, he thought the tree decay connected to some problem being caused by Galadriel, but he should now think that's no longer possible because as far as he knows she's gone to Valinor. So why no consideration that he could have been wrong? I can understand why no one would want to agree with show-Galadriel, but like it or not, he ought to be acknowledging she could have been right. They could have given him a less-than-perfect character to start with so he can have an arc and growth but, if so, they seem to have forgotten that character development is necessary. Nearly six hours in and if he's changing at all it's only to get jerkier.. Halbrand - how did he become a smith after all? He might be 'in' with the queen now, but why has the guild given him a pass? Did the queen or Pharazon ask them to? And if so, why? They plan for him to be heading off to Middle Earth with them very soon. Makes no sense. Mithrilgate - absurd idea overall and (as you say) we know there aren't any available silmarils for this - one with Earendil, one in the sea and one in a fiery cavern. Even if they are changing that, they've shown Elrond holding mithril. We don't see it have any effect on him. He doesn't say anything about it making him feel different. Perhaps there's just not enough, but they could have made their idea slightly less ridiculous by showing something here. I'd still think it was a bad idea, but at least their story would be internally consistent. Harfoots - is it possible for this society to get any more unpleasant? Now we see that not only do they leave people behind, there are circumstances in which they'd consider actively reducing someone's chances of survival by 'taking their wheels'. There's so much more, but it's getting too depressing to list...
@bgallagher9718
@bgallagher9718 Жыл бұрын
I foolishly descended deeper into the mithril rabbit hole... I'm certainly not expecting scientific realism in a fantasy setting, but is it too much to ask for them to even be coherent and internally consistent? 1. There's no question of Elrond not having enough mithril 'exposure'. He went to the mine. If it does something, they should have shown that or had him remark on it. There's the possibility that Gil-Galad is just wrong about this whole issue. That would be coherent. But then he's pressuring Elrond to break his oath for nothing and the whole mithril arc so far would be pointless. That would be even worse. 2. The problem itself is silly. Let's call it a 'Vitamin Tree' deficiency. It should not be affecting all elves equally. There should be visible symptoms to identify whether this is actually a problem and, if so, how serious. The show doesn't seem to want to distinguish between any different types of elves. EG no distinction between Noldor and Teleri. More significant here would be no distinction between Calaquendi and Moriquendi. Because the former got an initial dose of Vitamin Tree while they were in Valinor. The Calaquendi should be experiencing lesser effects of the deficiency than the Moriquendi. Even if there's no distinction between TYPES of elves, though, there should at least be distinctions based on age. Elrond (and every other elf born after the return to Middle Earth, which would include Gil-Galad himself, right?) never got their dose of Vitamin Tree at all. So if they're still (mostly) OK now (or has Elrond not realised that his soul has been rotting...?), then this should only be a problem for them and not an urgent one. Anyone who saw the Trees should be good for much longer. 3. Gil-Galad says they need to get the mithril or go into the West. Has he forgotten that the Trees were destroyed? There's no more Vitamin Tree to be had back in Valinor. I *like* unrealistic stories. That's the whole point of fantasy. But stupid stories are really annoying. I want stories that make me think. This one is increasingly punishing me for doing so.
@ThePhilosophersGames

Gil-galad makes very little sense I agree. Halbrand made a deal with Pharazôn by telling him where Galadriel went and he seems to know the art of smithing from his past. That suggestion came from Malva and she is a terrible person. Sadoc did not agree with her. But you need characters like that. Fëanor was also annoying, arrogant and terrible, (and did not seem very Elvish) but he is a cool and interesting character in the lore. I just hope they cut it down with nonsensical stuff 😂

@@ThePhilosophersGames Thanks re Halbrand. I hadn't noticed / remembered that. On Malva, I agree unpleasant characters are required in a story. But she says this conversationally. It's not loaded with import. Sadoc's eyes widen in shock, but he doesn't condemn the comment. The whole set-up suggests this is something that has happened before and therefore an option, even if Sadoc appears to think it would be too extreme here. That it could even be contemplated demeans the society more than I think is reasonable for story purposes. But that's one of the smaller problems (pun not intended!). That leaves a bad taste in my mouth but 'evil' stories can still be interesting, especially when well told. It's the weakness of story that's really undermining the show.

What might come in the future can ofc be closer to the books again - I hope. What was told in past episodes I leave behind me. I analysed it, put it into perspective of the books, criticised it and from that I move on. If season 2 would be more lore friendly, it matters less if Season 1 was nonsensical in that regard. Some changes could even make sense from the perspective of later seasons. But as said in this video. So far it's not a good Tolkien adaption. Sauron cultist could exist. Man in the Moon falls onto the world like a meteor is a thing in a poem Tolkien wrote as well. Galadriel did do some fighting in the books, Hobbits were maybe savage thousands of years before LotR. So a lot of this is somewhat plausible (sometimes more, sometimes less, sometimes not at all). The question is what they will make out of it. But as said so far the show struggles in my opinion and doe too much nonsense here in there, but maybe it gets better now.

Elrond makes it clear that the story about Mithril is a legend that many believe not to be true. This may be what the elves believe but not actually the origin of Mithril. This to me makes it okay. Galadriel sword fighting scene was kind of cringey. I wish they could figure out a different way to show how powerful she is. She is not a warrior princess, she's magical and otherworldly. Edit: And the power of the Balrog/evil going into the Mithril is a big issue as well. The Wise know that you can't use the powers of evil for good, that's a central theme with the One Ring. You could argue the Three Rings were made with Sauron's craft and are still good, but they are good specifically because Sauron never touched them.

Yes I think the Silmaril story is more triggering, but Gil-galad is also such a strange character. On top of that the song is an old legend and Sauron is not really active in Lindon. He is actually not allowed to enter and the other Elven realms are warned as well. So It is 100% not as I imagined it, which is very unfortunate. If I ignore all that, I still think it's a decent episode, but it's so far not a good Tolkien adaption. Though I have some hope left, but sadly there are not many episodes left. I hope I could get that point across in the review.

this mithril/Silmaril story is complete crap. 1. there is an actual Silmaril on the sky each night in Earendil with his ship 2. Sun and Moon are from the last fruit and flower of the actual trees Laurelin and Telperion, also giving light every day and night... and every elf knows it for a fact... the fading is more that middle earth is not the land, Iluvatar has planned for the elfes but Valinor Gil_Galad, one of the mightiest elfen warriors and leaders is such a douch bag here, Celebrimbor also, both knew something was off with Annatar, as did Galadriel and this show just makes them all unlikeable and this totaly is a random fantasy show with the names and places stolen from Tolkien's Legendarium. They take bits and pieces from there and try to build a 5 saison show with no clue at all what Tolkien was all about. also Gandalf said... its only place where mithril could be found in MIDDLE EARTH was Khazad-dum...

Yes the Gil-galad change is the strangest one (besides Galadriel). He is such a beloved character by book fans, but here he is hard to like and what he does makes no sense. It seems part of his role was moved to Galadriel (who does ally with Númenor by accident if you want and because it's in the script, not because she was a good diplomat). Portraying Celebrimbor as somewhat flawed makes sense though. He has the ambition, they however need to make him see his flaw and try to make up for what he has done.

Hi Chris, I hope you please have time for a language-related question :-) I noticed that the name "Pharazôn" in the show is pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable, and I thought it should be on the first. Then however I thought that these stress rules apply to Sindarin and not necessarily Adûnaic. Adûnaic has strong roots in Sindarin (right?) and I entertained myself with the idea that a shift in the emphasis of syllables occured in recent generations and that it would reflect a refusal of the Elven heritage; you know, like how teenagers sometimes desperately try to sound different by changing their speech patterns. What do you think of this? How is Pharazôn to be pronounced?
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late answer. I'm really behind in answering comments. It's pretty hard to say how Pharazôn is pronounced. in Sindarin the circumflex appears in on syllable words with a long vowel. However Tolkien noted, that he uses it in other languages is to mark them as alien tongues. "The use of the circumflex in other languages such as Adûnaic or Dwarvish has no special significance, and is used merely to mark these out as alien tongues (as with the use of k). " (Appendix E) So it can be ignored I guess. in general I would argue that stressing the first syllable would make sense. And it has 3 syllables with a double consonant and the ô seems not to indicate a long vowel, so the Sindarin rules would place stress on the first syllable as well. I personally though have a hard time ignoring the circumflex though and at least pretend it's a long O, while stress should still be on the first syllable. But I guess it's open for debate.

I love that you credit on video the artists, this is so cool! I enjoy the show and I think there is more lore friendly aspects to it than many are willing to admit. It was clear from the get go they would have to create a lot to fill in the world in terms of characters. The canon characters for the whole Second Age alone( Gil Galad, Galadriel, Elrond, Elendil, Isildur, Anarion and Sauron) could not tell a story in five planned seasons effectively. That is why we have so many OC´s. (They can ever have Stranger be Gandalf as they have a safe in which he had been returned from a travel himself before being sent back to ME in the Third Age...) About the legend. They are screaming at everyone this is just a legend, as in not confirmed. Gil galad is not a jerk for wanting to save his people and be alarmed. The tree is sick. he has proof in his mind something bad is happening... Would I prefer something strickly more lorefriendly? I suppose so. But seing the elves forging rings simple because Celebrimbor wanted to learn more from Annatar and wished Middle Earth to be beautiful is NOT such a compelling arc for a TV Series as " we either forge rings of protection from this holy grail metal or we fade by Spring."
@ThePhilosophersGames

Yes they need an additional motivation for the forging of the Rings, but I wish it could have been a bit more lore friendly 😅 I don't mind the decay idea and that they use Mithril as solution for the problem. I just wished they would have created a cooler idea for the origin story of Mithril. It felt very off for me. Also I like the invented characters so far. Imo they are the least problem. It's often the book characters that subvert my expectations massively that give me a hard time. And I even expected changes, but I expected them less drastic in the case of Galadriel and Gil-galad. Also I hoped for more natural progression through the plot by the characters actually moving the plot forward and not the invisible hand of the writers. But Episode 5 felt much better in this regard.

@@ThePhilosophersGames Agreed. But I realy do not take Gil Galad´s actions as him being a terrible character like some are assuming. I think he trusts Celebrimbor very much to listen to him and it is not Gil Galad´s fault if Celebrimbor has been listening to faulty advice...for all he knows, the tree is indeed dying and he does not wat to ship all his people to Valinor and leave the other peoples at Middle Earth to their fate. The story has it's weaknesses but I don't get the complaining about setup and too little story. Have you seen the Fellowship both book and movie? Constantly new character pop up, most my no explanation who they are and what they do. Almost the complete counsel of Elrond consistent of characters who were never introduced, showed for the first time and some join the fellowship. Without all the background we have today, especially in the movie, Legolas is just a random Elf and Gimli a random dwarf, never any explanation who they were. Same for the story: go to Bree, go to Elrond, go to Mount Doom. If you would apply the same criteria to LotR, then you could have the same complaints. Just because things don't all make sense, yet doesn't mean they won't in future. Just because you can't put everything into the big picture, yet, doesn't mean you can't at the end. We are only a few episodes into the first season and there will beat many episodes and seasons coming, so how can you compare a just started story to fully known tales. It's like watching the first half hour of Fellowship and complaining you don't know where this will lead you after just having seen a history review and a birthday party. As we have seen, a bad last season can completely ruin an experience and you can't forecast all plot, final judgement will only be possible after the last episode of the last season. It's cool to speculate who certain characters might or might not be or who they might become in future. Strangle the most unrealistic guesses seem to come from the "experts", like the stranger being a Balrog, which is obvious nonsense. For me that's like fortune telling, trying to read something out of a source that's simply not there by finding obscure quotes from Tolkien books and assuming the author's of the show would come to the same mind boggling conclusions. Not sure if you ever watched all the making of from LotR and how they talk about how they had to adapt the books to make them fit, how they used quotes from the books but having them used by other characters in other locations, how they restructured events and timeline and how they compressed events and timelines. We were told upfront that RoP also compresses the timeline, yet all the reviews always assume everything will happen exactly the same way and order and amount of time than in the books. This is so strange that the same people who now praise the LotR movies as perfect adaptations to cinema (and rightly so) complain about using the same technics in the series. Elves helping out in helms deep, so cool, but how could Gladriel be in Numenor, that's not in the books. Dwarf women without beards, what a scandal, yet there's so much to criticize in the Hobbit movies, there was very little complaint about the male dwarves main characters not having anything that would be counted as a beard for a dwarf. Most of the complaints about RoP is because it's new and we don't know how the stories will go and how they will end and people being book purists while for the previous adaptations all the derivations and inventions became well accepted and a lot of people would actually claim the movie version to be correct over the book version if asked if the correct story is this or that. Go watch what Tolkien scholars are saying about the structure of the books in the making-of of two towers and how normally no publisher would accept books so unusually structured, yet, everybody is trying to fit pressure RoP into boring standard film school approaches.
@ThePhilosophersGames
@ThePhilosophersGames Жыл бұрын
I can only review what is out now and the difference is: we are ober 5 hours into the story. That is in the middle of Two Towers already, getting close to Return of the King. In two Towers we already had a pretty good idea of who Legolas and Gimli (son of Glóin) were. Ofc it will be 50 hours in total, but 5 hours are still 5 hours, esp. when all you do is rushing through setup after setup (besides the Elrond arc, which imo works best in the show). In addition I can read up on those background information in the books if I want. I often can't do that in the show, because they change so much. Ofc FotR is slow and has massive exposition parts, but the themes are explored better and as you say on the way. In RoP the actual story (which will be the conflict in Mordor with Adar and later Sauron) has not even started yet. In addition a lot of episodes feel too slow and too fast at the same time, due to soe strange writing decisions. They wasted so much time in the first two episodes. I have a series going through books and films and compare them: like 25 episodes (7-8 hours in total) and Frodo just got out of his bed. So I'm familiar with how they moved dialogue around 😅 I also know they changed several characters a lot for the films and I don't mind changes like that if it helps teh story, but e.g. Galadriel is simply a hard to understand character that behaves in ways that are hard to understand. I understood why Aragorn was so doubtful in the films (after 5 hours), but i don't get why Galadriel thinks insulting and threatening the people whose help she needs will see success. It's an odd writing choice. The films did many good decisions, RoP is doing some decisions that generate problems for the current episodes and are hard to understand. Why does Galadriel (as character that is planned to have a lot of character development) need to be on the ocean for so long, where she can't have that character development? this can still be criticised. Tolkien had the Hobbits walk through forests for several chapters before they reach Rivendell, but we learnt so much about them and the world on this journey. RoP feels often rushed and is often only scratching the surface. I don't mind the slowest of pacing, but RoP manages to feel slow and rushed at the same time, while extremely subverting expectations for characters we already know. All this also ofte leads to the story feeling forced and artificial and not naturally developed. And as said I think episode 5 is a step in the right direction. I actually liked this episode. Though I disliked some of the lore changes/additions.

@@ThePhilosophersGames I agree with most what you wrote here, there's definitely a lot that can be criticized in the show from what we currently know but we don't know yet (at least I still hope) that some of the story arcs might turn out to be great at the end. I would also calculate the time different, yes we are 5 hours in but only a tenth of the overall show, so I compared it to a tenth of LotR not the first five hours if LotR... I would also think that we are way into some of the stories, like the Harfoots Strange story, the Adar story, etc. I agree with your take that the Galadriel Story is not the most elegant and the boat and water part was bad, yet people and Elves don't always take the most logical decisions (that would be the Sci-fi guys with pointy ears), they also rush things and act stupid, that's ok, look what they did in the first age. If you look at LotR movie Galadriel, yes, she's more ethereal but she's not diplomatic, she tells her opinion and what she wants others to do, she doesn't ask, she just does it with more blur applied. Anyway, same as you I like talking about the topic and I think you are doing it great, so most of my critic of the critics was not targeted at you personally. I just hate when people glorify the past and hate everything new In hindsight most things look better and there's a lot of nostalgia (and I love the LotR movies) but if people would apply the same criteria and objective approach to both old and new they wouldn't come out so different. That said there's still a fifty-fifty chance that RoP could turn out great or become a disaster, we'll probably only be able to tell once we know the whole story.

Great analysis. Definitely the best thing about the show is the discussion and potential surprises it holds. The episode was pretty bold with regards to the additions to the lore but expanding the origin of Mithril is exactly the sort of thing I'm ok with: Vague mysteries and artifacts with few specifics about them in Tolkien's own writings. The earlier mention of the Silmarils now makes sense (and telling that it was Celebrimbor who brought it up) and I like that they connected it to something, although the idea that a Silmaril (presumably Maedhros' ?) worked it's way into the roots of a tree is pretty absurd. My guess would be they can't develop the fate of the Silmarils too much for rights reasons or they would stick closer to the actual events of the Silmarillion. The likelihood of this being untrue in-story, is therefore quite high in my opinion. My favourite mystery at the moment is the Stranger. For now I still think Balrog is possible but agree there is clearly some internal conflict within. The Mithril legend offers some possibilities and I wondered if perhaps his mortal form and maybe the positive influence of the Harfoots my be influencing the darker spirit within? Also got me thinking about their powers which is interesting. Like, as original primordial Maiar were the Balrogs potential sorcerers as well or purely combat-oriented? Are 'fire-spirits' limited in the types of magic they could employ? The heavy use of Quenya gives me the biggest pause for this theory though, I admit, although it could add weight to yours, Chris! Lastly, it was really great to hear a traveling song just like in the books and I loved the map-based fleshing out of the lands the Harfoots travel through, with 'Hobbity' placenames and the beautiful transitions to real landscapes. That really transported me to their world and made me care about their hardship and struggles. More of that please!

I like the stranger mystery too, and of course the where is Sauron and what did Haldar do to survive and what will he do. Galadriel does drag the show down, and I’m glad someone pointed out it’s not the actress but how they wrote her. I don’t like the hobbit portrayal. They seem mentally slow and maybe that’s the point, like Nori is not very intelligent and the stranger is a bad guy. When he deters the wolves, that reminded me of Gandalf and Sauruman with their staffs. I just felt thrown off by this mithril plot, hope this can be explained better in the next episodes. The most intriguing aspect is all the mysteries that must soon be revealed. Very much looking forward to the next episodes, and more analysis on this channel🙂

@@ThePhilosophersGames Its clear that this mithril plot is the start of the storyline that ends up with Celebrimbor forging the three elven rings. The question is, how much information is hidden for us viewers here. Things are happening beneath the surface of the storyline. Unclear for me if Annatar is already involved with Celebrimbor.

By accepting it's so far a bad Tolkien adaption, but enjoying some parts of it like the Elrond & Durin parts. It's not like I hate it. Some people complain a lot about it and it could definitely be better, but it's not like it's complete trash. In parts it's pretty decent. I also think so far the writing and some strange writing decisions hold it back, but it could get better, because so far we had mostly only setup and have not seen the actual story (which is what I mean by strange writing decisions).

it's amazing what 10 extra minutes can do for the overall pacing, hope they keep it up with the 1hour runtime instead of 50min we got before. and i'm not really hung up on the mithril origin story (since the show itself is already telling us it's probably not true) so i agree, this was a pretty strong episode. i personally loved it. now, i didn't really keep up with rop news during its production but apparently the first 4 eps were filmed during heavy covid restrictions then the production had to take a break and all the other episodes of season 1 were filmed after it. just something interesting to point out, considering there is a noticeable jump in quality from episode 4 to 5. anyways, thank you for the review. looking forward to the second part of your Galadriel series.

I don't understand all this critic as "not as Tolkian wrote it". If the lord of the rings movies would have been as written, there would be at least 9 movies. Movie 1, all 3 hours of it, would take place in the Shire with lots of singing and dancing. Movie 2 would have Strider (Aragorn) appear during the last frames of the movie. I doubt that would have been a success. The movies worked because they were a "readers digest" version of the books. Rings of power is a tv show, and the advantage of 5 seasons is to flesh out the story. So ask yourself this: Do you watch the lotr original movies or the extended editions. If the extended versions: Why?

As said I liked the episode, but the lore changes can be triggering, esp. if they subvert expectations. And it does not help to waste time on nonsensical elements and rush other things at the same time. PJ films still managed to explore some themes and details of Tolkien quite well without feeling rushed. RoP changes a lot and does not feel like they explore theses themes and ideas as well as PJ's LotR films - in the same amount of time. Like if the show would just be slow and take time to go in-depth (even with changes), then I would complain less, but it often stays shallow and still many things happen off screen 😅 In addition the plot often drives the characters, not the characters the plot, which makes it feel artificial. Like an artificial hand pushes the characters around constantly. That is very different for PJ's films. If we look at RoP's mithril origin story: the basic concept would of it would make more sense in Beleriand, but they place it at the Misty Mountains. Why? Because that is where the Mithril needs to be, not because it fits better into the world that way. They need light, so they mention a Silmaril, etc. It's not very elegant that way. Or take Theo's sword. He has this word and he also has this anger in him. Is it related to the sword's power or was Theo always like this? Isildur is another character that feels underdeveloped. There might be changes, but those are not the problem. Same with the Elven decay. It's plausible that it exists, but that the Elves have to leave Middle-earth in Spring without mithril or they die feels very underdeveloped and like a random set time limit to amp up the dramatic. In LotR we get the urgency of leaving the Shire, because the enemy searches for the One Ring and we already see a Black Rider in the Shire very early on in the story and it makes sense, because the show explains very early: Gollum got captured and said Shire and Baggins. That is the setup, the rest is then the characters doing their stuff. If some chronological details are left out or are changes is not a problem as long as the core of the story is intact. In RoP they leave things out and do a terrible job of explaining why. Why do the Númenóreans hate and fear the Elves so much? It seems they cut out a scene where Elendil explains this, but this is a major plot device and we have no clue besides: the one Elf, that also wants to leave as soon as possible takes our jobs away. And then it's Halbrand, who is not an Elf who takes at least one job away later. It feels very constructed. So if they change lore at least make the changes work. I hope that explains my reasoning a bit more.

Yes it was added later and it is an invention for LotR (only 1966 added to the Hobbit). Just checked and it seems he first mentions it 1939. It's older than Galadriel (1941) that way 😄 The mention of it being in Númenor is from "Distaster of the Gladden Fields" in Unfinished Tales, which is a late writing of Tolkien (60s or late 60s?). So I guess he later expanded the use of mithril a bit?

I’ve gotta be honest, and maybe a little heretical here - I think that, for an adaptation, the idea that Mithril has the light of a Silmaril in it is actually pretty cool. And I’m not certain that Tolkien would totally despise that idea. I think it’s a neat way to connect the Silmarils to the LotR story, and it has an appropriately mythological tone to it. It also still works with the idea of the Silmarils being merged with the Elements, since Mithril being imbued with a Silmaril still makes it a part of the elemental Earth. But I certainly understand why some Tolkien experts are put off by the change.

I'm with you in the club of heretics! I like the concept mithril has been created by the light of the trees as "good" and as "strong and unyielding" as evil. Only by this means the looming corruption can be fought with. But how far can you go before you're evil yourself? - I think this is the theme we've got to keep an eye for. It's clumsily written so far but we shall see what they make of it in the remaining three episodes.

So many don’t understand, that not everything that is told by Galadriel or in the story overall must be true. It is mostly yet tombs revealed. The so called „Tolkien-Fans“ ignore some facts about this Mithril-story: Celebrimbor himself has been deceived by Sauron. The elves overall had no idea, that Sauron fooled them, until he made the One Ring. If you want to understand that better, watch the newest analysis of „Rings and Realms“. There is actual Tolkien-expert.

I suspect as well that Celebrimbor had contact and is under the influence of Sauron, but I still dislike the story, because it would work better when they just modified a few details. In the books Gil-galad warned of Sauron relatively early and in some versions Galadriel did not trust Annatar. So there was opposition. Gil-galad evens ent message to Eregion and warned them: "But elsewhere the Elves received him gladly, and few among them hearkened to the messengers from Lindon bidding them beware; for Sauron took to himself the name of Annatar, the Lord of Gifts, and they had at first much profit from his friendship." Now seeing Gil-galad in the show can disappoint some books fans. Ofc not all has to be true, but we can't argue based on what we don't know yet. From the perspective of Episode 5 the mithril story seems strange. one can speculate why that is, but imo that is no reason, why it can't be disliked or criticised.
