Rings of Power: How it should have been | S1 Episode 1: A Voyage Begins

Жыл бұрынHello friends and foes of Middle-earth and welcome back to this first episode of my own take on how a Second Age show should be like OR How the Rings of Power should have been!
Tolkien's world is truly fascinating and I think that the Second age of Middle-earth holds a lot of interesting stories that could be adapted into a tv-series. Sadly I don't think Amazon did a good job with The Rings of Power. So I decided to do my own take on a Second Age show.
In this first episode we set the scene for the entire season - what's the conflict? who are the protagonists and who's the supposed antagonist?
We start out on Númenor where we follow the young prince Aldarion, who is eager to travel to Middle-earth with his grandfather Vëantur, Captain of the King's ships. He wants to travel with Vëantur back to Grey Havens in the kingdom of Lindon ruled by High King Gil-galad.
In this episode we meet some of the key characters of this entire season like; Aldarion, Tar-Meneldur, Tar-Elendil, Galadriel, Gil-galad, Cirdan the shipwright, Celeborn, Celebrimbor and Elrond.
Unlike Amazon, I haven't followed the same restrictions as they had in making the Rings of Power. The reason for this is simple; you cannot make a proper adaptation of the Second Age without the rights to the Silmarillion and The Unfinished tales. Without those works you won't have access to the Akallabeth, the history of Galadriel and Celeborn and details about Númenor and its rulers.
I hope you appreciate this attempt at adapting the Second age into a Tolkien show.

First of all, I have to say wow! This is extremely impressive! When I first heard that this channel would make videos about how an actual Second Age show should look like I thought it would be more of a broad overview of what the first season would include but you actually decided to create full-length scripts for the entire thing! The level of dedication, lore detail and effort put into this is insane! I can't wait for the next one. Keep up the excellent work!

Thanks for doing your take of a second age adaptation, I can safely say that within the first few opening lines it already felt better thought out and more respectful to the law than the RIngs of Power. Well done and I look forward to seeing what your seasons will bring.

This is excellent. As a huge Tolkien nerd the way you summarized the Silmarillion was incredibly elegant. And the story is certainly intriguing and ignites the imagination. Well done!

Have you looked into hiring voice actors? If so, how much would it cost to crowdfund the rest of the season? Or maybe wait till you finish your pass through everything and then do a voice acted version down the line? I was listening to this as I was cooking and I can honestly say that I was blown away. A radio show/short series truly voice acted would be awesome. Can't wait to see the lore videos and all the extra bits!

Just a suggestion: if it's not too much trouble, you could include the name of character speaking in front of the subtitles, to help people follow the dialogues even better, since you're narrating all of it. This obviously takes you lots of time to produce, impressive amount of work put into it, well done sir! I'm still waiting to find out if there's anything that would be interesting to hook the normie general audience, but I'm enjoying it, will be tuning in for the rest!

I'm not 10 minutes in and i had to pause and say, thus far, THIS is the story I'd want to see on the big screen. If just Amazon would have hired people who actually know Tolkien's works and loved them.. I mean even the dialogue, c'mon if a fan can write this there should be SKILLED people in Hollywood (as if) who do this kind for a living who can write good dialogue. But nooo we are left with RoP instead. Sorry, getting carried away. Great work! I'm off to finish the rest :) thy for this

@@CounciloftheRings @Council of the Rings I liked it! As you said it sets up the rest of the season and keeps the viewer invested how aldarions adventures in middle earth will unfold. Tho I have to mention that the sudden change of aldarions heart to stay in middle earth, when he was stubborn on leaving a scene earlier, was well, unexpected. I understand months have passed between scenes and you are limited in how you can visualize it. It's just what I have noticed :) I would love to discuss it more on your discord #patdeamon

Incredible work, and well worth the wait! The dialogue being close to the spirit of Tolkien's writings was a genuine treat. The opening scenes from the perspective of the Numenoreans conveys the depth, wisdom and reverence of the Valar of Numenor in its youth.

This truly is awesome! I only have one critique: I'd really love to have some voice actors (female, older, younger voices). I understand how difficult it would be for you to do that, but it would make it all much more immersive. Nevertheless I'm really excited to follow this adventure, so thank you!

I already found the stories and plothooks more enticing than anything from Amazon's take. Personally I would have added a bit more focus on Celebrimbor's Feanorian heritage, since he is the last descendant of the guy who started it all with the creation of the Silmarils and that he was looking to surpass him in craftsmanship, and he is sitting in a table with people like Celeborn and lore-wise Tolkien never said if Celebrimbor participated in any of the 3 kinslayings (the last two are unlikely because he left Curufin after the Luthien incident, but he could have participated in the 1st) but I don't know what you have in mind for future episodes regarding Celebrimbor's character development

All that actually! and far more. He didn't take part in the kinslaying in Menegroth, but Oropher and Celeborn's way of thought is that he has inherited the guilt of his forbearers (sins of the father mentality if you will). Much like they hate the dwarves for what other dwarves did (not even the same house of dwarves). It could actually be seen as a bit of a comment on the modern world and how certain countries and people want other countries to apologize for slavery, while the slaves are all long dead and so are the slave-owners. I think it's an appalling way of thinking, so it's interesting to include and try and portray both perspectives. The sins of the father mentality is incredibly dangerous and hopefully that's also something I can highlight just a little bit in this series ☺

Hey! Love it! Just a thought though. I think Gilgalad’s motivation to send out Aldarion was a little unclear. He just stated in the meeting he wasn’t sure about Numenorians, and in the next scene Aldarion is suddenly the only one he trusts? Either he is lying or really distrusts his own kinsmen. I think he could had stated a far more believable and profound reason to send Aldarion. - Why me? - Why indeed? I’m not sure. The shadow we seek has ever been out of sight. If I were to send out my own kin, I fear it will remain hidden and the search be in vain. But you, a stranger in these lands with the future of your people on your shoulders. You may not need to seek darkness, my heart tells me darkness will find you. Whatever will is set against us will surely try to find its way into Numenor too. It is not without great risk I would set you against it, and you will be tested. Yet I sense your heart is pure and the allures of evil will have no sway over you. Círdan thinks the same. If the shadow would reveal itself to you, I ask you return to Mithlond and we will together decide what to do. … Or something in those lines. Of course, only you know what Gilgalad has in mind and what the future episodes will include. But I just found the “you are the only one I can trust” trope a little uncalled for.

There's actually a secret foresight Círdan have told him about. It's not revealed yet, but Gil-galad's first words when he sees Aldarion "So it is true. You are the man Círdan foresaw would come to my halls". He knows he needs Aldarion, but simply doesn't trust Men due to the fact that his father (Orodreth) trusted Túrin and that led to the destruction of Nargothrond. The next couple of episodes will dive deeper into this until Gil-galad starts to trust him. It's actually meant to be a little confusing here, but hopefully it will be easier to understand his motivations down the line. He sense the conflict within the Númenóreans, which is foreshadowing of what will happen :D

@@CounciloftheRings Fair enough, I guessed there was more to why Gilgalad wants to put Aldarion on this quest. But for Aldarion, it must have seemed out of the blue that he is one of the few Gilgalad trusts. Saying he might succeed were his own kin might not, due to the fact that he is a stranger, would maybe make more sense to Aldarion. Then Gilgalad could still keep his ultimate reasons to himself.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially when all of the great Eldar were sitting in the meeting hall. THAT is how you introduce these great characters. Though we don’t have as fleshed out characters like in LOTR, you brilliantly showed what Tolkien has already told us about them and expanded it. Oropher, mistrusting of the Noldor and being ruled under Gil-galad, takes a jab at Celebrimbor. Celebrimbor tells us he is not Curufin, not Feanor. Celeborn shows he mistrusts the dwarves. Galadriel is shrewd and focused in the council and not “Guyladriel”. Gil-galad wary of the Numenorians, will eventually begin to trust them and ally with them in the War of the Last Alliance. Cirdan with the gift of foresight. Bravo sir, I can’t wait for the next.

The line at 35:08 , I wonder if that will be repeated (perhaps not word for word) to Celebrimbor by Annatar in a, perhaps, a theme of knowledge itself being used as temptation (and to Gil-galad and Galadriel, who perhaps recognises the danger of his words). Also beautifully done, this would've piqued my interest for sure.

Fantastic job. I genuinely feel you did a great job preserving the narrative approach and feel I have experienced reading and listening to the expanded works of Tolkien's Middle Earth. The way you introduced Aldarion's developing love of the sea and Middle-Earth was well presented and yet subdued so as not to be over-the-top like ROP (e.g.: The sea is always right...meh). The tension in the elven council was palpable and yet appropriately represented in the courtly interaction so that it didn't feel uncharacteristic of persons who have lived for centuries. Thank you for honoring Tolkien by approaching this series in such a reverent way. I am anxiously looking forward to the progression of the series.

My own thoughts, I figured that the Main character for the series should have been Elrond, he was either involved directly or was near most of the major events for the second age, unlike Galadriel who mostly stayed in the background. First episode could have been the background and show a few different Key characters and locations but mainly show it from the perspective of Elrond, and then by the end of it, showing an elf trying meet various Elf leaders offering offering gifts. Next episode be about this "Elf" meeting leaders like Galadriel, Elrond, and Gil Galad who know something is off, except for Celebrimbor who wants to take advantage of this Elf's knowledge. Next few episodes show the rings being made and then the reveal of Sauron halfway, leading the last few episodes showing the fall of Celebrimbor, the dwarves being driven back to Moria, and Elrond being driven to what became Rivendell. Either have the last episode or second to last have the arrival of the Númenóreans, and either end the first season with Sauron being driven back to Mordor or save that for the 2nd season....either way, I think anybody could write Rings of Power then anybody Amazon hired.

How is this better than a billion dollar show by one of the biggest companies in the world? Seriously well done, I really enjoyed it and it really shows that Amazon couldve made an amazing show by simply hiring people passionate about the lore and telling a good story

Thank you! Yeah what surprised me the most is they didn't even add lore that would make sense. Like Gil-galad's father is a bit of debatable topic. I went with Orodreth, but it's not mentioned here and it's only alluded to that he died. They could have done something similar in so many cases. Instead we got weird stuff like Isildur's mother that drowned... (the sea is always right!) I'm glad you enjoyed the episode! 🤗

Loving the lore building so far and the way you established the personalities of these characters. The elves feel so fleshed out and full of agency - something Amazon ignored and even Peter Jackson struggled with. Feels more like a novel than a script though. From episode 1 we need to establish some villains/ some dangerous looming threat to elevate the stakes for future episodes. Perhaps introduce Sauron’s servants preparing the way for the dark lord. Show the extreme threats lying just outside the friendly confines of Gil-Galad’s elven kingdom?

The prologue mentions the servants of Morgoth fled. Then it's brought up again by Galadriel at the council-meeting and Aldarion also questions the whereabouts of Ungoliant when he talks with Elrond. oh and Vëantur warns Aldarion that not all Men are elf-friends or friendly towards the Númenóreans. So I've poked at a ton of threats including some hidden ones you'd only notice if you really know the lore well, but there's a lot. @@CounciloftheRings You’ve told of these looming threats. Now you just need to figure out how to weave them into your screenplay in visual form. You have very limited time to progress the story and build tension. We as an audience have to be terrified for Aldarion and his crew as they grow more and more restless in their quest to experience Middle Earth. Again not disparaging your hard work and your incredible care in beautifully crafting the lore.

This was brilliant, a great start, I actually glad how you narrated it I think if u were making over the top voices for everyone it would be too jarring, but ur voice narrating it with the pictures of who's talking is perfect for this. On that note someone needs to animate this, biggest compliment I can give is I was glued to this from the start, so much so that the episode flew by and left me wanting more, where as watching RoP I was picking up and looking at phone every 5mins through a mixture of boredom and cringe from what they were doing to the lore

I am! Lots of work done on the rest of season 1, I just want it all to come out on a weekly basis, so that’s why it takes so long. Episode 2 is out though and a bunch of videos about episode 1 ☺️

Excellent. Great story adaptation and great video! We can feel the second age vibes and the lore is greatly respected. The dialogues are very good and exempt of unnecessary and clumsy grandiloquences. I'm already very invested. Good work!

Even though every first episode has its flaws, this first episode is scores above Rings of Power already. Totally understand about the voice acting, but you have a nice voice to listen to, so we're good. But I do hope that maybe you can get help in that department. Otherwise, very well done!! Very nice work. I felt immersed by the get go. and something I realized after watching for a while that this is a different animal to the lord of the rings - which it should be. I wasn't sure if you would go for a style telling the story similar to lord of the rings or not , for in the "real world" I guess the logical way to go about it would be just that - to make it appeal to the general audience. (which wouldn't be bad either ,just not very original). Looking forward to the next episode!

I'll watch or read the shit out of a fantastic second age fanfic like this. The way you wrote the dialogues actually feels like legit sentences out of Tolkien's books. Attention to each words of choice matters very much when it comes to honouring the spirit of Tolkien's writing.

I haven't read Silmarillion. So in this series, I won't know which one is canon and which one is your fanfic. I'm gonna be the person who judges this series as a nonreader and a non-English speaker. For the first episode, it's good, I guess. I think some dialogues are too heavy, especially when the key characters are in the same place, discussing about the evil stuff. But those are important for world-building, so I can't see any other way to avoid it. Even so, I can still follow the story, so it's not a big deal. Anyway, I'm learning about creative writing, and trying to write a fantasy story. I'm looking forward to the next video.

I enjoyed it very much. There were a couple of repeated lines that I might edit out as well a line that was right out of Star Wars, that I might edit as well, I think it was "I sense fear in you." that is a Yoda line, I might say "I sense much trepidation". But I am just quibbling. I will be back for the next episode. Much more of a slow and deliberate introduction. All the important character's has been introduced some intrigue and conflicts have been set up and other seeds sow for more.

Wow! This is good, this is really good! Well done! If not for the rather particular format, I would have thought I was listening to an audiobook. So far the plot seems promising, the pacing is adequate - relaxed but not lingering - the characters have depth and are interesting with complex motivations. All together these factors make for an engaging beginning of what I guess will be an epic tale! I am also very pleased that you have taken the trouble of providing sources for all of the artwork in this episode. I am looking forward to the 2nd episode, and have great respect and admiration for your dedication in the building of this series. Last, but not least, it's a real pleasure to have come across a (so far) extremely lore-accurate and well-researched project. Keep up the good work, and may the light of Eärendil light your path.

just by the prologue alone this is already far better than what amazon did. not educating your viewers of the history of middle earth was a complete failure on their part they simply threw us into the world, sure they had Galadriel give a little intro in the first episode, but it was only from her point of view! they'd should have just given us the true conflict that being Morgoth and lead into that one of his greatest followers was Sauron

I've just recently became interested in Tolkien's works - I'm almost done reading The Hobbit and will soon start the Lord of the Rings and then move to the Silmarillion. This is first rate! I was hooked almost immediately. And it was such a relief to have the characters behave like Tolkien characters, particularly Galadriel. The "Council of Gil-Galad" was excellent! One minor point. I noticed one piece of art that I think you used several times of elves sitting around a table and it looked like the character at the end was a dwarf.

Brilliant work. I've read some of the comments from Tolkien fans praising your work. I would like to do the same but as a non-hardcore fan. I got hooked immediately not by flashy visuals nor emphasis on "inclusivity" but for the actual narrative and characters. Can't wait to see where this goes!

I hope the people working on The War of The Rohirrim are taking lessons from the amazon disaster, and that the movie will be good and do well. They could then go on to produce live action movies again, about stories from the appendices. Imagine seeing Eorl the Young or the Battle of Fornost on the big screen...

Great job. I greatly enjoyed it. Having read Unfinished Tales, I can tell that this story expands on the existing lore in a consistent and balanced way. Looking forward to more episodes. One note would be that the little details were amazing. You mentioned having less as you move on, but perhaps keeping just enough will be awesome. I loved your intro providing the necessary backstory to set the stage! You manage to be both more concise and more comprehensive than ROP. I also love the way you've set up the grandeur of Numenor and are already distinguishing between the ruling line and the line of Silmarien.
