In this video review a couple of the top critics reviews of the Rings of Power and the brutal truth hidden within. Early Mainstream media reviews are in for Amazon’s take on Tolkien’s Middle Earth in their big budget series Rings of Power. And many potential viewers, ranging from those who are excited or concerned about the series are interested in these reviews so as to gauge whether the show is worthy of their investment of time and a subscription to Amazon Prime for its streaming service.. Prior to this, a lot of those who had been treated to special event previews of the first two episodes were under a review embargo from Amazon and there was only so much they could say. However they hardly put forth any critiques at all as most of the reviews said pretty much the same thing. Namely that the show was absolutely beautiful and grand in scale, painting the show as the answer to the prayers of Tolkien fans. Now the embargo has been lifted and though the first 2 episodes started out with a high 90’s rating on Rotten Tomatoes, as I investigated, I found that this score did not accurately convey the content of the reviews themselves.

...because Galadriel wasn't the extremely arrogant, entitled, and ambitious character in her youth that she clearly was in the books ? It's almost as if you mouth breathing cretins weren't actually trying to kill this series before it started because it wasn't "faithful" to the "canon".

@StupidHillBilly ...that's because you didn't actually read the books. She was arrogant, entitled, hard-headed, and desired to rule lands of her own in Middle Earth. What's "impressive" here is that you mouth breathers can't even be bothered to keep up with your BS reasons why you didn't like the show...before it even aired.

As someone who has a background in digital marketing, I suggest watching about 60-70% of the first episode on Amazon. Then stop and remove it from your watchlist. Whatever they've done with this show, why would it mean that they "hate" Tolkien or his fans? If you look at the literal definition of the word "hate", wouldn't you consider that it's kind of an overly strong word to use in this situation? The fact that people use the word "hate" so readily says more to me about the world we live in than anything else.

I've never given credence to Rotten Tomatoes and similar critic reviews since it's a very small number of people involved which cannot come close to representing everyone. Too bad these couldn't be honest from the beginning but we all know they had to lie so they could keep their preferential status. Just under nine hours to go until this begins. Over the years, I've stopped relying on Rotten Tomatoes, at least as far as the critic's reviews. User reviews tend to be more accurate, so I'd wait for those to start coming in before looking at them. As for the show itself, I'm giving this one a hard pass. I was initially cautiously optimistic when they first announced it, but the marketing, the cast interviews, the show runner interviews, etc., just put me off of this. I get that things will be changed for any adaptations (and Jackson's movies are no exception), but the way they've presented established characters shows an utter lack of respect for Tolkien's work. How can they say that they're sticking to the lore when, for instance, Celeborn is glaringly absent (he was with Galadriel since the First Age, yet where is he? And without Celeborn, how is there a Celebrian, and without Celebrian, who does Elrond marry and have Eladon, Elrohir, and most importantly, Arwen, and without her, who does Aragorn fall in love with, marry, and restore the Numenorian bloodline with? Is Galadriel's brother was killed "hunting the enemy", who was there to save Beren, and if that's the case, how is Elrond even here? Harfoots aren't Hobbits? But they're Hobbits. Just... no. Don't get me started. As always, Elaine, I appreciate your calm approach and reasonable approach. Great video, as always!

I did watch the first two episodes and it was visually beautiful. I think for fans not really into Tolkien's world they might like it. For me, I had a hard time really caring about the characters. I wanted a show that actually focused on Tolkien's characters not a bunch of new ones. In trying to make Galadriel a more exciting character they have her going on made-up adventures that never happened. I didn't get that. If you wanted a story that focused on characters that went on amazing adventures, why not just make other Tolkien characters the main focus instead of making up adventures for Galadriel. They make her come off as unreasonable and guided by emotion. By the second age, we know that is not who she was. Overall, I was disappointed, but I knew what was coming so I should have been prepared.

I guess their omission of the kin-slaying and subsequent Doom of Mandos allows them to have Galadriel single-mindedly focussed on revenge, making that the reason she remained in Middle-Earth. We all know that's BS but it seems to be what they've gone for.

I went into the first LOTRs movie a lifelong book nerd and came out outraged - no Tom Bombadil, Sauron wasn't even wounded by Elendil and Gil-galad and Isildur just got lucky, Glorfindel just didn't exist apparently and was replaced by Arwen, just outrageous... now I've grown up a little I appreciate that it is a true masterpiece, and that licence sometimes needs to be taken. If those movies come out today, they get ripped to shreds months before they come out by angry nerds for all the canon inaccuracies. We all know that's a fact. Now, I'm not saying this show is those movies (I didn't mind the first two episodes but the first in particular was sloooow) at all, but I promise you opinions on how good it is will be 90% tribalism and only 10% the actual content of the show.

@@HallieEva - getting the Silmarillion, that I can agree to... I'm not sure how realistic an option it is though. Making stuff like this though? I have no problem with it, it's basically fan fiction (no problem with that either) operating entirely in the significant gaps Tolkien left. Tolkien wrote such a masterpiece that people tend to get a little... totalitarian about it. There's more or less always something to be raging at if those are your standards, it's not good for a person (I speak from personal experience haha).

@@nineomite it is fairly well known among Tolkien nerds that the Doom of Mandos still lay upon Galadriel at the time of this show - compressed timeline or not, as indeed it still did at the start of LotR. Therefore it's a pretty massive departure to have her even offered a place on a ship to Aman in the first place - she would not have been able to pass through. Elrond would have been aware of her tragic status, as would Gil-Galad.

Unfortunately we live now in an age where only the article's headline and perhaps its first paragraph is read. Initially, it's quite telling when you have to continually point to stunning visual effects as a justification to giving it a high ratings. The first sign something was amiss, is claims of "answering the prayers of Tolkien fans", whom are largely "literary fans". - Whom expect only deviations, as confined / defined by the canonical works, already established. I mean, you're talking about people whom have no trouble envisioning a whole world merely from print, afterall. So I took it to mean by "Tokien fans", they are referring to PJ's trilogy. Its not the same thing. The book, is like ripples on still water; rings and rings of escalating dramatic adventure. So, its always lamented that certain things are consistently omitted in any adaptation of Tokiens "Lord of the Rings", much less any of his other works. - The encounter with Old man Willow, Tom Bombadil and the Barrow downs, is important. Lord Glorfindel's discovery of the Elfstone and his search for Strider. The introduction of Elronds sons, Elladan and Elrohir, as well as Arwen. The meeting with the Pukel men - are just some things that have different reasons for being comprehensive and nuanced. Hollywood, chances of ever roping in "Tolkiens fans" are less likely to ever happen; unless they break with their traditions, not ours, or the authors. - This fixation on 'trilogies', is a perfect example. PJ should have done 4 films and dramatised the source. So then, even the most casual audience would be appraised properly.

I feel like almost all media in modern days pales in comparison to the 80-90s. For example; in the 2nd episode there was those in the dwarf crowd that were not in character and were acting like they was behind the camera at a sports event on tv. Everything in media now has to either play identity politics or push a message, they just do not have any passion in real art anymore. If you are going to have a "strong & independent" female lead for example....stop making them "perfect" and emotionless in every possible way. My god, its like character development is not even a thing anymore.

Please watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy by Peter Jackson, which was released 2001-2003! It won MANY Academy Awards and deserved even more. It is a much, much better adaptation of the Lord of the Rings books than this show is an adaptation of “Tolkien.” Please also consider listening to the audiobooks! I find these very helpful for when I am unable to read, and it is also very relaxing! Enjoy!

I have a small collection of scripture calligraphy in my home. If an artist approached me with his "modern day" versions touting how he was a Bible "super fan" and displayed his self written and illustrated masterwork, I would compare it to the original and note if it honored and REFLECTED (not projected a political vision) it. No matter how ornate the illustrated calligraphy, the text and resulting genius of the message must shine through. Even though I'm neglecting the spiritual and sacred aspect of the Holy Scriptures in my example, the artistic aspect here would be like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa, then prying others to praise it as a worthy "modern day" representation.

By Canon Those that accept Rings of Power are corrupted Those that claim to be phans must have judgement! This show is heresy. we just released our KZfaq audio production on this matter. We called this heresy Jan 21, and declared it 25 March 22. Hope is kindled though, keep up the fight! "Exsurge Tolkien" is Novus Renaissances's Official Encyclical in defense of Professor J.R.R Tolkien's Legendary Middle Earth Mythology. It is one of the comprehensive responses against ROP Heresy.

What I found added to the mess that is Rings of Power, the Elves used 3 short lines of jaggy Elven language in both ep 1 and 2. The laboured dialogs were amateurish at best. There were some really cringe moments and even throwing away of ANY attempt to identify the Races according to lore. It seemed like they drafted a list of traits for each race then just as quick threw them in the trash. There seems to be an attempt to dazzle the viewers with the expensive cgi and rolling landscapes in particular hopefully joining this monsterpiece to the masterpiece of Jackson's dedication toward Tolkien's lore and beautiful crafting of Middle Earth and the races. The Rings of Power based on the two episodes released has no right or basis to use the "Lord of the Rings" moniker over the title of this, mess. It would fit better with the moniker of The Wheel of Time as it is simply junk at this stage.

I am apprehensive about this offering but I do like to gives things a fair shot to see if it will hold my interest. I’ll probably watch the first episode or two a couple of months down the road. This doesn’t scream “must watch” based on the flimsy ties to Tolkiens works though, which is a shame (but then, why pay $250M for access to only a dry appendix with no dialogue.?)

Speaking about the reviews - I wonder if it would be best to look at independent reviews from critics not working for any corporate entity that would benefit from Amazon’s failure or success. I wonder how the reviews could affect Amazon’s future investments in episodic television streaming. How many corporations stand to gain either from this series failure or success?

So pretty but shallow. A lot like a lot of things being done by Disney, Hollywood generally, and most of modern Entertainment. NO real depth and gravitas. That is exactly what I love about the Lord of the Rings. I read it at 16, the first time, and now, at 71, I am still learning new things about Tolkien's lengendarium. A fan can drown in Tolkien lore.. the deeper you dive the more you realize you know next to nothing. I'm sad, disappointed, a little frustrated and angry, but mostly, now, just grief stricken. a Joan of arc style Galadriel, what I have heard about her 'tempest inside of her' personality .... the 'proto-hobbits not even existing that far back... I've heard quotes that sound like something a 15 yr old would write, not JRR Tolkien, who was a wonderful author of prose. He certainly knew how to turn a pretty phrase! This will probably be the last show made in my lifetime and its going to be pretty but hollow. I would rather it done on an empty stage with great actors and Tolkien's beautiful prose. I call this empty calories entertainment from what I heard today.

I'm not really interested in it, given all the chatter going on. It seems to be clear that the showrunners felt that they can out-Tolkien Tolkien, which is rarely something that turns out well (and recent'ish tv history has proven true, looking at the dumpster fire that was how GoT ended). Masters of their craft are that for a reason, and deserve more than having some hollywood writer turning their work into trash because they felt they had to improve on it.

Professional reviews bear little weight nowadays, in truth, there is no better push for a series than actual word of mouth and it seems doubtful that someone will say to their friends or co-workers "Did you catch that Lord of the Rings series on Amazon? It rocks!" The views for this series will continue to plummet with each passing episode. Kinda sad really, as something of this nature had so, so much potential.

The common thing Ive heard is that Galadriel is just unlikable. From people that were able to watch screenings of it. Even from the trailer you could tell that. Im just lost as to why the writers wanted her to be like that in a show. Going to be on of those you can watch and have a good laugh at though. So that is a plus.

All the reviews MUST hit two points, almost worded the same way: 1. Visually stunning. 2. Representation. Even those reviews with concerns about pacing, acting, script, direction and story still make sure to spend two paragraphs creaming over how "good" everything looks... and every one MUST spend at least as much content budget saying how "good" it is to see "representation" of modern, real-world demographics in LotR as they do actually critiquing it. That is why the "most honest" reviews all take 6+ paragraphs to explain what could be said in 2. Start with what you actually want to say, add in the 2 "visually stunnings," and then match your critical word count with an equal number of "diversity celebration" words. So you can see in some publications, the limits are firmly set - if you have 1000 words to fill the column, how much can you say about acting, when you have to match that with "first female dwarf?" Can you complain about pacing, when you then have to "balance" that with "strong female lead?" How deeply can you explore poor scripting when you have to write just as many words explaining that you just love the inclusion?

Are you seriously saying the high reviews have too many words? When I look at any critic site all of the written reviews user and critic are 7-10 while the average score is 6 which means most people just rated it and did not write anything, curious almost like most people went into the show hating it or just gave it a rating without watching it

Hey there, thanks for your channel. You do a great job. So, grew up reading Tolkien, including the Silmarilion. I have returned and read all of those books as an adult. I just finished both episodes. I was not blow away, but also recognize they are trying to establish the Second Age universe. I don't particularly like their casting choices for Galadriel and Elrond, though I find them to be solid actors. Galadriel is like 6'3" and I believe her height plays a key role in shaping her personality not only as a warrior, but as a military/spiritual leader within elvendom. And, I don't like it when studios changes key aspects of a universe to fit modern sensibilities. Of course, studios are facing teens and tweens who are super idealistic, so I get it...but, dislike it. Leave that crap out of Tolkien. That being said, I am okay with them compressing timelines, creating characters not in the Silmarillion, etc. In the Hobbit and in LOTR I didn't not like new characters. Because the Hobbit and LOTR are novels and have carefully created characters. Don't mess with them. But, the Silmarillion is obviously more of a historical summary that is detailed at only particular key events. I guess I want this to succeed. My hope is that like a lot of great series the writers and actors learn/find their way to the right balance. With this Amazon series...if they do, we will get so much high dollar content. It would be really great I would've really enjoyed a prologue with the Creation Story including Illuvatar and the emergence of Morgoth and Manwe. This is the kind of stuff that could eventually be created once a First Age series were to come into being.
