Completely agree. The celebrity status has made people forget how good he was. As a Londoner, I supported United mainly because of him. In a team full of quality players, he always stood out for me. When United and England needed something, it usually fell on his shoulders to deliver.

He was a leader. An example to set to others. If you want to be the best at your trade then you practice and repeat. Its a great analogy that the lit is dimming a little as time goes on but this is a great video to remind people what he did for the game and continues to deliver just in a more executive role now

Even when he was still playing Becks had this weird treatment from some football fans that he was overrated when I always thought he was underrated. Like Rio said, he wasn't a flashy skills type of player but his passing, crossfield and crossing abilities still haven't been matched in my opinion. He was so consistant and so damn good at these things he made a quality striker's job easy at times. I think his celebrity status made his haters spout off about him being overrated but nobody can convince me it wasn't the opposite, his celebrity status distracted from what he was doing on the field during his playing days, let alone now. Awesome freekick taker too of course but it was his long crossfield balls and whipped crosses into the box that he's still the best of all time at.

In my opinion, its Giggs who's the most underrated British player of all time, Giggs has 270+ career club assists at the highest level, he's the EPL's top assister of all time, he's the F.A cup's top assister of all time he's the 3rd best assister of all time in the champions league only Messi and Ronaldo are better, he also scored 168 career goals at the highest level as well. altogether he assisted more than Zidane, Guti, and Figo combined. but you never hear his name mentioned once when people talk about great players from that era.

Canadian here. I've never really been into your kind of football, although I did cheer for England in the World Cups of the 90s/early 00s, & still do if Canada gets knocked out. Of course I knew Beckham was a superstar player then, but after recently watching the Netflix documentary about him, I went, as Mr. Ferdinand said, onto KZfaq & watched some highlights, and it just showed Beckham as even more talented than I thought he was. Watching the Man U Legends vs. Bayern Munich Legends highlights (when Beckham was 48) & he's still able to make those long passes & crosses....well, it just blew me away. Hearing about his work ethic is a clear indication of why he was as good as he was. When you're at a superstar level, it can be easy to just say, "Look, I don't need to train, everyone knows what I can do." Hearing that he never took that attitude despite all the hype surrounding him & his family just tells me not only what kind of player he is, but what kind of person he is as well. I know that the Netflix doc might be considered to be biased, but he seems like a normal dude, or as normal as someone with his talent & lifestyle can possibly be. And, apparently, his teammates at Man U, England & elsewhere in Europe really think he's a good guy as well, which should tell people a lot. I have tons of respect for Mr. Beckham.

I don’t know how but even in his playing days and especially now, people criminally underrated him. He was runner up for the Ballon d’Or one year. He was winner up for the Fifa world player of the year twice. I’m a Liverpool fan and whenever we played United back then everything went through him. It was almost like everyone was instructed to give him the ball as soon as they got it. All the people who describe Scholes as this player that controlled the game and made things happen. Well he didn’t start doing that until the end of his career. When Beckham played with Scholes, Scholes was usually in the final third timing late runs into the box to score goals. Beckham was the one controlling the games. Also dude would score ten goals a season. He was world class.

The Class of ‘92 is one of my favourite documentaries and I’m not even a sports fan in particular. It just did a great job of explaining why football is beautiful and important, and how a few footballers became great. I highly recommend, if you’ve not seen it.

Well done Rio, fluent, eloquent, TECHNICAL understanding of quite how good Beckham really was. Great to heat an Insiders technical view, and really intelligently delivered. Often said that Beckham's brilliance was never properly understood: now you know it from the inside.

Great work ethic and one of the best passers/free kicks. Today's game has evolved though, and is superior. Players back then tried to do too much with the ball and lose it more often. But that was more an era than a David Beckham thing.

Fantastic footballer. Rio was spot on. Had all the fundamentals, and basics down. He's one of the best set piece takers there's been. He was also a fine example of how to be a captain by leading by example of what you do on the pitch. I've yet to see a better crosser of the ball in the game. He was a strikers dream.

Born in 1982, watched Becks every weekend in my teen years. The 90's (and early 2000) was - by far - THE best time in football I have ever witnessed. I used to watch the comeback of KING Eric on October 1st, 1995. Unreal squad with King Eric, Scholes, Giggs, Keane, Neville,... later Rio Ferdinand. So many leaders but also so many different types of brillant footballers. Becks was the crossing king, but he also scored beautiful goals and was an important box to box player. I will never forget this time and I miss it A LOT! Todays football is not the same, not nearly.

truly one of the great players of my lifetime. despite the fact that he was hated by many football 'fans' (west ham/man utd!!) and derided by our jealousy-fed gutter press; then hated by the whole world (not me) for being the fall guy for a blatant piece of simulation and a referee who thought the game was about HIM, he was still able to carry the england captaincy (and the england team) pretty much single-handedly into the '98 world cup. sadly, most people's versions of reality and history are dictated by how much the person writing the piece likes that person. his performance against greece (not just the free kick) is as high a level as you will ever see. his crossing was next level, and he went and did well at Real (watch his goals). how he has handled himself in the face of all this hostility is pretty amazing. keep going, Becks!

He was always in Ferguson's first eleven and thats all you need to know. Alongside Keane, Scholes, and Giggs, Beckham stood alongside them in terms of quality. He was a great player and gave everything, every game. Best right foot in the world, and you might think that made him limited, but he had a quick footballing brain and, because of that, you couldnt stop his right foot.

Brilliant description of Beckham. Unreal passer, unreal striker of the ball, and an unreal professional. You can compare some great crossers of the ball to him, but Becks is still on a level of his own. It's unreal how with such ease he was able to create clear cut chances with crosses from huge distance. You almost couldn't defend against him. You could compare his crossed to Pirlo's long passing because both were creating chances from huge distance, but different technique. His long passing was perfect too, you can compare his diagonal long balls to Xabi Alonso. People see him not dribbling and doing tricks and think he wasn't that good but he was one of the best attacking midfielders/wingers of his generation no doubt.

Hey Rio, Becks also worked really hard on defending that right side with Gary Neville also. He wasn't a player who would just stay up field and say give me the ball. He would sprint back and fight to get the ball back also. I think people sometimes forget that he had that side of his game also of working selflessly for the team.
