I cant find a single video on youtube that talks about proper PSI for acetylene and oxygen regulators in regards to the smith little torch and the different tips. Regular sized torches people say 5 and 10 (7 and 12 with closed torch) Rio PLEASE make a video on this (or anyone) and or someone respond in the comments. Thank you! bout to go use my setup for the first time. wish me luck lol! watches SO many tutorials. bless

Hi Nicole. I’ve had this happen too. I don’t think it’s the regulator but the tank it self. I’ve noticed that sometimes they do not close completely and will leak gas into the regulator. The only things I know to suggest would be to tighten the valve down more, or go get another tank. Most supply houses have been ok with me swapping out a tank that doesn’t fully close. Mark N Tech

Just a curiosity, I have an oxy-mapp/propane jewelers torch similar to Smith from Gentec that uses disposable oxygen and mapp/propane tanks. It comes with the regulators that fit on the disposable tanks. My question is, would I need flashback arrestors for safety on this set up or is it even necessary for small disposable tanks like these?

hi Bruce...I don't have the smith but the Gentec Small torch...can I use Smith tips on my torch...and also...I purchased it from a friend...brand new in the original package...when checking for leaks I noticed a leak at the connection of the disposable oxy tank...I have it as tight as I can possibly tighten it...any ideas what may be going on?? ive tried another tank in case it was the tank but its doing the same thing.....please any help would be great..im excited to use it..thanks :)

Hi Allen, I think the Gentec torches operate similarly to the Smith Little torch, with the Little torch we do not use the flashback arrestors with the disposable tanks. The arrestors will reduce the flow of gas and hamper the performance of the torch. So we would recommend not using them with the disposable tanks. I hope this is of some help. Mark N Tech

I got the torch recently using dispsable oxgen and propane tanks. Can't get the flame to work on the #3 torch, even with first using only propane, barely on it wont stay lit. All the other tips i can light. It looks much eaier with the Aceetylene. any thoughts?

Hi Lana We don’t support the Gentec torch, but since it’s nearly a perfect knock off of the Little Torch I would suspect that the LT tips would work. As for the leak, you might have a bad regulator, and you could check the gasket that seals it against the tank. You can also replace it with the Smith Regulators 500093 ( propane) or 500094 ( oxy) will work. I hope this is of some help. Mark N Tech

Hi Wayne Unfortunately we don’t weld aluminum here so we have very limited knowledge about the techniques and how it would work with an Oxy / Acetylene torch. I wish this we could be of more help with you’re question but unfortunately we are at a loss on this one. Thank you Mark N Tech

Hi Nicole, yes. The Little Torch systems that include regulators include check valves which stop the reverse flow of gas. The Flash Back Arrestors are sold separately #500008. I hope this is of some help. Mark N Tech

im interested in this tourch can i weld aluminium and what gas are you using. im new to this so i think i prefer tourch alu weld than a mig or tig. i thought using oxigen is to cut metal.

You have some studying to do re: gas welding. Tinmantech and Weldingweb are excellent sources. There is no substitute for reading. The Oxwelder's Handbook (no edition later than 1939) is outstanding.

Hello, I was going to purchase one of these torches but found out that my father has one! We tried to used it but once we would get it lit, it would stay lit for about 30 seconds then pop really loud! It sounded like a gun going off! What are we doing wrong? Also, little black ashes would fly off of it and land EVERYWHERE! Is that normal?
@RioTechs
@RioTechs 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Sarah. The black soot is very normal when using Acetylene ( you can’t see it but Bruce had that black soot floating in the video, stuff was everywhere). With practice you’ll be able to light the torch quicker and minimize that. At the 4:30 mark on the video Bruce shows how you can reduce the soot by increasing the Acetylene flame. Or If you would prefer, you can switch to using propane and that will go away. You might check the pressure you have the gasses set at, the popping noise and flame going out indicate that the pressure may be too high. The Little Torch uses very little pressure from 3-8lbs of pressure on both the fuel and the oxygen. If you have more questions feel free to contact our Tech Support Team at Technical@riogrande.com. Or 1-800-545-6566 and they can work with you on the finer points of using the torch. Since it’s your dads ol torch. You might want to check the hoses to make sure they are not leaking. While they are pressurized dunk the hoses in a bucket of water and look for bubbles “forming” on the surface. There’ll be bubbles , but you want to look to see if any of them are growing. If there are, you may need to replace the hoses. I hope this helps Mark N Tech

I have the Little Torch System with generic tanks and regulators from Harbor Freight. Whenever I shut down the system and bleed the lines my Acetylene Pressure gauge goes up again and I have to bleed the line multiple times. I even notice it going up again when I leave the house and come back hours later. Does this mean there is a leak or something wrong with the regulator?
@Comm0ut
@Comm0ut Жыл бұрын
The regulator is defective. BTW I never store acetylene or propane in my home. The cylinders go outdoors in a suitable rain-proof container. I also avoid non-US regulators since the quality of soft parts tends to be poor. I collect and overhaul OA equipment of all sizes for personal use and when I get offshore regulators and torches I scrap them so they won't endanger anyone else.

When turning it off in the demo of the first tip you showed, after you said to turn the oxy off before the gass, you then said, "or you can do it the other way if you prefer." What do you mean??? I thought oxy gets turned off first? Then with the number 7 tip you said to turn it ALL THE WAY up till the soot stops?? I would never even think of turning it that high and that long in the small room I'm working in. I turn the thing on and off all day. By no means could I have a blasting flame like that every time... I did try, for experience, and the soot never stopped, just was way more! Why can't I just turn it on like normal?? You didn't blast it with the #2 tip... what about the other tips? What is a carbonizing flame used for, and what is an oxidizing flame used for? I thought you said in the other part one that your can't use the rose bud with acetylene. Or is that a different tip??? Also, in the other part one, you said, if your pressure isn't high enough it can pop. Or back flash! I switched to a 7 yesterday, from a 6. And I didn't change the pressure. And it kept popping after it was going for like a second after both o2 and acetylene was lit fuse for a second or so. Is that because I didn't raise the pressure?? I put the 6 back on and it was ok. Why don't you do a video showing HOW to adjust the pressure per tip, for both gases!?? Please!!!

Hi There, Our Jewelry Tech Team was happy to outline this for us. Here is the process for starting and shutting down your torch. Hope this helps! Startup torch. 1st gas (propane or acetylene) 2nd Oxygen. You will turn on the gas let it bleed before you strike. The bleeding allows any air to escape form the torch tip. Once the gas is lite you will add oxygen slowly to the tip. You can adjust the flame size once you get the gas and oxygen mix . When shutting down the torch. 1st shut off oxygen 2nd shut off gas When shutting off the acetylene gas the popping sound is normal. The mix of air and acetylene gas at the tip pops to prevent a flashback. It is a safety feature in the tube.

Do you need to wear welders goggles/shield? With either acetylene or propane?
@RioTechs
@RioTechs 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Stephen. For both gasses It depends on what you are doing. If you are welding or casting you really should wear welding goggles or safety glasses rated for that activity. If you are hard soldering/ brazing you should wear some type of safety glasses but opinions differ on whether or not they should be tinted. Tinted lenses can make it more difficult to see what you are doing but do offer more protection. The only glasses I would wear for soldering would be something like these www.riogrande.com/Product/Solaris-Kiln-Glasses-IR-Green-3-Lens/201052?Pos=1 They have an IR #3 lens but you can still see enough through them to get the job done. I hope this helps Mark N Tech
