Here's some great advice!! Don't buy anything that's dairy cross!! Buy beef calves!! You buy cheap junk and you sell cheap junk
@dusttodusthomestead2 жыл бұрын
Definitely a safer bet to buy the beef calves. 👍
@nalley6815 Жыл бұрын
There’s nothing wrong with dairy crosses. To say otherwise is absolutely ignorant
@willbass28694 ай бұрын
Ridiculous comment. Half the so-called "certified Angus" program cattle are Holstein ×Angus with minimal white markings. All those "good" steaks at the national franchise "steakhouses" are dairy cross for the middle class
@farmdude2 жыл бұрын
I see this all the time people get cheap calves off Craig’s list or private treaty and then they are mad when they don’t bring what beef cattle bring at the sale happens all the time. Dairy cattle cost way more to feed and a lot longer to finish and carcasses are not that great when finished. If your gonna feed dairy animals plan on owning them for 2 years buy 400 pounders and sell them in a package preferably 1 lb packages. Only way to do it small scale. I have owned over 400 of these things sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t
@dusttodusthomestead2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is definitely the way to do it. What was I thinking....haha. But seriously, gonna do it different next time, if there is a next time. 👍
@chuckrobinson5992 жыл бұрын
I saw it when you started loading them. I already knew why you took a beating. You need to look up cattle prices in your state online, and follow them. Then you'll know what sale barn you can do best at when you sell. It's a business like any other. There's always somebody looking to skin you. Good luck on the next crop.

Never having had holstein steers before, I usually have had angus in past, I didn't really explore where I should take them to sale..... big mistake on my part. I won't make that mistake again though....haha. On to the next batch. Thanks, I need a little luck every now and then...👍

This is the problem with Holstein and Holstein cross. I've got beef cows some have a touch of Holstein or jersey. I run a Brahman bull, the calves bring a premium price due to hybrid vigor. I've got an uncle that has all Holstein cows runs a beef bull and never keeps any of his heifer calves, his calves bring less than half of mine per pound.

Can almost hook your Holsteins to a plow and save more money on tractor maintenance than you stand to make at the sale barns.
@genewileyopa2 жыл бұрын
Well that was the pits. Ya spend time raising an animal with hopes of making some money and then bam. Was a nice ride down, I enjoy the valley and mountain views. Ya if you had the money, might have been a perfect time to bye some cattle. And enough hay to feed them. I worked for a guy years ago that was an auctioneer. He would bring home critters that like you said, brought 10 dollars. Sometimes it didn't work out if they weren't to weak, or sick to keep them going. Thanks for sharing Josh. I enjoy your videos. Iowa cares

Thanks. Yeah it was a bummer. However, it is what it is, better luck next time. Now if I can get the brand papers so they'll release my check....haha 🤔
@JohnnyDoowright-bx1tu5 ай бұрын
Yeah as soon as you started to load them I knew they wouldn't bring but guessed 68 cents. Those holstiens don't bring much. You can't start out with junk and expect to get #1 prices. I bought cattle for 20 years.
@dusttodusthomestead5 ай бұрын
Yep. Never had holsteins before and haven't since. Although, I was at the sale couple of months ago and they were bringing just over a dollar all day. But times are different and I still won't try them again. Not worth the effort and time in my opinion. I'll just chalk it up as a failed experiment. 👍

I was a bit surprised that you brought them to a sale barn , they were a bit too light for the auction ring there is an old saying done weighing, done selling. I raise a lot of Holstein calves for live sale at c. 1000 lbs plus the jersey crosses are basically worthless over here unless they are in calf .
@dusttodusthomestead2 жыл бұрын

If you sell cattle we have all been their a time or two unfortunately! The sad thing of selling cattle cheap if that someone is making a killing on them after your loss on them. Had the same thing happen a few years ago, but the market was full and busy that day took some vary nice cows down and a few days later the check showed up only got half of what I should of. @dusttodusthomestead2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, never had holstein steers to sell before. Usually had angus. But didn't realize no buyers there for them before this. Lesson learned I guess. What about Twin falls area? Any golstein buyers in that area. Might be the next closest livestock sale to me.
@tannertaylor94322 жыл бұрын
I believe you'd probably do a bit better at twin falls on the dairy Cross stock Twin falls definitely seems to have a wider array of stock that goes through and sells. Never been down there but I looked through their Facebook feed and their market reports.

Quick question. Why would you brand them knowing you were going to sell them?
@dusttodusthomestead2 жыл бұрын
Well, when I purchased them they had someone else's brand on them. So, I always brand them when that is the case. I branded them maybe a month before I sold them. At that point I wasn't sure if or when I was going to sell them. But I ended up needing to sell them. 👍 Yeah, my timing was not very good on that.

Hell the auction barn where I’m at is crooked as all get out. I had some beef calves go in and they never got to the showroom. Sold per head not by weight out the back door for 100 dollars a head for 250-350 pounders. Everyone else that sold they got 450-600 dollars. Owner said it’s my fault for not staying to make sure they sold across the scale. I Know the guy that bought them and he buys for the owner of the sale. It’s hard to stomach.
@dusttodusthomestead Жыл бұрын

@donaldambrose9440 Жыл бұрын
Sorry about the low price, but you were off the mark your selling a week before Christmas. You should really be checking the sale barn prices and take 'em in when it's more favorable. I stick with beef cattle, Angus and Angus mixed, usually the price is what I expect.

Central Ohio. The market has been horrible ever sense COVID. There were a handful of local guys that left after the first hour then only 2 buyers from out west the rest of the day. About 1600 head sold that day. Most dairy crosses only brought .20 cents

I raise mainly Angus mixed cattle and about 20 sheep in Ohio. I got 1.75lb last year for my male calves last fall, dad sold some lighter 350 lb calves this summer for 2-2.25 lb at the sale barn. Now the market is closer to 1.50lb bouncing around based on the quality of calf. The sheep market looked good for the spring and summer with those high prices but is way down now. Maybe a good time to get in, but they are more work than cows.
