I enjoy your no fuss matter to rip these sheets and your comment about.....don't worry if they get dirty....it's a rug. You remind me of my mother in law who I loved dearly, we lost her a couple years ago. I wanted to show your video to my husband and while he was watching he said "god...she reminds me of mom". She was always trying to advise me that everything doesn't have to be perfect in my projects and not to be so hard on myself. I can tell you are a down to earth kind of woman as was she. I subscribed because I like your methods and you make everything very clear. It's just a bonus that you remind me of someone who I love and miss so very much! Now when I want to search out videos..... I just look for Mom. 🙂

That is such a nice thing to say! I am sorry you lost someone so dear. She was right though, try not to be so hard on yourself, it is advise everyone should live by!

OMG. This is the most perfect "how to" for tearing sheets. Thank you so much. I was cutting sheets earlier this evening with a rotary cutter because the first "tear" on the first sheet ripped unevenly as you have described will happen at times. I was doing this cutting before I found your video. I will give ripping another try using your technique because that would sure be a lot faster than using a rotary cutter in my opinion.

Wow ! Beautiful video. In Tamil language Paati means grany you remind me of my Paati. she raised me I love her a lot. Your voice and the patience in explaining reminds her . Wow! You are amazing! I have never heard of a toothbrush rug until I saw your toothbrush needle video. Of course I had to see what a toothbrush needle was. And then I had to see how to make a toothbrush rug. So now I'm here, having followed you like a little puppy, to see how to shred sheets and you are absolutely awesome! I'm "liking" all your videos because you deserve to go viral. Thank you for sharing your talents!

Thank you for this review. I have been chuckling to myself all day because of it. I hope you try to make a rug, or anything for that matter, as creating is the true evidence of man's soul.

Awh yes, I am most definitely going to try my hand at a toothbrush rug. Hahaa! I usually scope out the local Salvation Army every couple of weeks or so, so I'll be on the look out for a gently used sheet or two. Thank you for the encouragement. I'll keep you posted on my progress. :)

...Love your vids. But what size sheets do you use, and how many to make a (let's say..) 2'x3' throw rug? I realize you may use multi colors in one rug, but on an average how many stripes total per rug? and where did you get that kind of toothbrush?

I would guess about 5 single sheets to make a 2 x 3 rug. I have no idea how many strips it takes to make a rug. I found my toothbrush at a goodwill. Some local dentist was giving them out, and I suppose as his name was imprinted on it. Customers are telling me they see these types of old toothbrushes at dollar stores, but I haven't checked.

...I knew it was an old toothbrush!! Wonder if it would have been worth some money some day.. oh well, not now.. lol. I go to dollar stores and dollar trees, so far I haven't seen anything remotely close to what your toothbrush once looked like. Holy crap!! 5 single sheets? WoW. I suppose shopping in thrift stores would pay off in the end.. even garage sales would help, at least you can chew them down a buck or two. This is a good time of year, a lot of people where I live (KC) is rushing to have their fall garage sales. Could be 5 sheets in the wind out there.. lol. Thank you

Have you found it's best to keep the same type of fabric or can you mix it up a little? I have cotton sheets and flannel sheets. I was hoping to mix them for a good color pattern, but I can work out an alternative if that's not wise.

The trouble with flannel is that the cotton fibers are shorter. Flannel in rugs will wear out faster than regular cotton or cotton/poly mix.

I just feel that the sheets would rip in the washingmachine when I want to wash the rug later. But I see that your snippets it very close the end of every piece of rag.

If you watch the video on how to make toothbrush rugs, you will see how the slits at the end of each is used in making the knots. I can tell you those knots stay tight. I have rugs I have made over 10 years old that I wash regularly.

I started cutting the edges off and the corners out and then started to rip.. but I couldn't tear it. Do I just have to pull harder? Or could it be coz it's polyester?

Yes, it is because it is either polyester or microfiber

Is there a specific direction to rip sheets so that the rip stays where it's supposed to? My sheet is going wonky (smaller and bigger) as I rip.

I am guessing that you are trying to rip micro fiber sheets. They do not rip well. This video shows cotton and cotton/ poly sheets. I have tried to rip micro fiber sheets, and can't. I also don't know how they will hold up in long term.

Do you tear from the top of the sheet to bottom or side to side?

Usually, I tear from top to bottom. The exception is when I have a striped sheet and I want all the colors of the stripe in each strip....then I rip side to side.

Yes, in fact the vintage rag rugs were in small strips like that. I use the larger strips to make a thicker rug that beater bars on vacuums won't get caught in.

Good work, but I think that the fabric is in good condition enough to make clothes for poor people...

Define poor. What if you are just poor enough to not have extra money in your budget to buy household items that you need. This is a way to make generational rugs that last 20 years, by using sheets. I really don't need preachy statements when this is a practical solution for many people. Do you know what happens to the sheets that don't get sold at Goodwill? They get bundled into a rag bin, and sold by the ton.

I used to donate sheets of fabrics & clothes in good condition like yours to an Orphanage, and I reuse the very bad one as rugs, my best regards

I don't know of any orphanages still around. They foster in here. We are very rural.

You can ship them to some charity organisations like "Oxfam" or "Save the children" or others for fighting cancer or for refugees, etc... I still like your work, it's very clever and I'm interesting in preserving Environmental resources & not wasting them...
