As someone who was born in America in 1982 I remember a very different and better country than what we have now, I remember when it wasn't some cancelable thing to say the American flag was the one you love and the one you trust. I did and still do because I still believe the US can and is a force for good despite the prevalent corruption and greed. God bless the USA!

To those that don’t know, this is an anti war protest song. The story the song tells is a true story of a solider that went to Iraq and his experience with war.

It also starts off talking from the "narrators" perspective where the first chorus starts off showing how proud he is to serve, then how he did what he had to do because of war, and then finally the narrators like, im a hero for all this shit i have done? I can relate to this song tooooo well

I live with things that I did and was trained to do and I’m proud I never let my buddies down. But coming home was not what I expected. I can’t sleep and I am fucked up. @@vintagetrk I don’t need to have gone to comment, it’s literally the origin of the song from the band Rise Against, you can google it. All the things you did that fucked you up, you did that for “liberty and freedom” right? Guess what, this is what freedom of speech looks like. I appreciate what you’ve gone through so I can say what I want within reason, but your sacrifice doesn’t give you the right to police others speech.

This song is actually anti-war. This song is saying that young Americans that have nothing else get baited into joining the military by recruiters by telling them “just carry this gun, you’ll even get paid” and that they can see the world. When in reality they find out the horrors of war that come later in the song. This song is actually humanizing the man who is the “enemy” that they take away with the bag over his face, by saying he is taken from his family and friends. The woman at the end is then holding the white flag, who the soldier takes as a threat and shoots and kills. The whole message of the song is that in the beginning he is admiring the American flag and is going to “fight” for his country, but by the end of the song he realizes the white flag, or the flag of truce and peace, is the only flag that he loves and the only flag that is trustworthy to him, not the American one. Not a hateful comment, actually love most of your content. Just a clarification on what I believe the song is about. Peace and love ✌🏼

iraq was filled with war crimes, from us soldiers ra**** civilians, one guy did it to a 14 year old girl, and then killed her and her family, which included the mother, father, and the little sister who was 6 years old, the guy was 502nd Infantry Regiment, then there was the Haditha massacre, where us soldiers opened up fire on 24 iraqi women and children, this isnt to say when we were in afghanistan the us didnt continue their murderus conquest, but iraq also fits here. @@GabrielVonWahl

Being that I've been to Iraq, in training they emphasize if someone is coming at you, regardless of gender, age, size, whatever, and they refuse to stop when u tell them, you are to shoot them cuz they could have a bomb strapped to them. So the third verse where the girl keeps coming at him and he kills her, only to find out she had a white flag in her hand trying to surrender brings me to tears every time cuz even tho I've never had to pull the trigger I can't begin to imagine the fear, indecision, anxiety, emotions that a person would go thru in that situation. This song is too real for me and definitely hits home.

PTSD is and will always be a serious issue, but, for those that never had to go through things that make PTSD happen (military wise) there is also something that a lot of people don't want to talk about, that is COSD (combat operative stress disorder). Some one can never see combat and still show some signs of PTSD because we (former soldier and veteran/combat veteran) were always taught to have the same reaction to all of these scenarios. My experience with what he is talking about at the end of the song was from training. When one of my fellow soldiers in basic was acting as the natives of the town she kept walking towards our Cordon area and I tried to use what training I had to say, "stop" "move back", and she kept coming. Well, she had something wrapped in cloth that she was holding like a baby......I thought that all of my training was for a moment where it might be a bomb, so I fired (blank round, she was about ten feet away) and it turned out that she was supposed to actually be carrying a baby. My drill sergeant yelled at me for firing at her, but, all I could say was that we were taught to see threats and not to let them come too close. To this day it still fucks with my head that we are supposed to see threats everywhere and still know at the same time what is and isn't a threat

And that he had no problem with does he had to kill.. he did it, to survive, but if the choice would givin, he would‘nt go the same way again, because they told them, they gonna fight for freedom, and they gonna change the world.. and the only thing changed was even more hate.. and even more war‘s and less freedom around the world..

I thought we left that in Vietnam, but I was shocked when working at the Pentagon after the military, the Pentagon actually allowed anti-war protestors to stand right next to the main entrance off the Metro where every DOD Civilian, and Military Personnel coming off the Metro train or the Bus had to walk past. They only intervened when they threw animal blood on people, and even then they let the other protestors not involved continue to cuss at us and bang their anti-war drum. I could not believe the hate people had for us after 9/11 for all of the Soldiers who bravely fought to defend their very Freedom to protest; it was especially worse after Abu Grahib and Bagram, but I couldn't believe the Pentagon Police just stood there and let all of that happen right next to the main entrance where all of us had to go through to get our badges checked. I can't imagine what it is like to be serving now with the entire Govt against our military, willing to throw their lives away in another useless war without properly supplying them with the weapons and armor they need to fight as we give more money to Ukraine than we ever gave to our own military? And every Christian Patriot that disagrees with our current leaders are treated as domestic terrorist and removed from the military until only the left leaning pansies are left and the remaining Patriots are subjected to CRT and Gender Sensitivity Training. God help Save America! God Protect our Military!

Wow, thank you Drake for this song and Devin for your commentary and scriptures. This was my first time hearing this song, but it really captured what we went through in OIF OEF, I personally issued from the Pentagon the Abu Ghraib and Bagram defendants and attorneys their temporary personnel security clearances for the trials. I and several other Soldiers also stopped 2 Contractors that were whipping these non-kuwaiti 3rd world nationals they called them, denying them water and food and beating them like slaves women and older children and old men that were filling sandbags on our kabal Camp Virginia Kuwait in Nov 2001-Apr 2002; we locked and loaded on terrorists. I know personally one Airborne Ranger a friend of mine that was a Sniper in OIF 2004 that had to shoot a kid the same age as his kid because the kid picked up a RPG and was aiming at Soldiers. He was haunted by this for a long time, couldn't even look at his kids without crying, lost his marriage, but today has given his life to JESUS CHRIST and God has Restored his Brokenness and Blessed him with a wonderful family and reconnected him to his kids from the prior marriage. I have also known 2 Soldiers in my combat support group that let the evil memories from war take over their lives, one taking his life, and the other being thrown in jail and then when he got out and was almost finished with his halfway house supervised probation he took a plastic toy gun into a grocery store and made sure he got arrested again and thrown in prison longer. 22 Veterans a day still take their lives because of the wounds from war. Pray for these Soldiers and their broken families that war has permanently destroyed; and share with them the Love of JESUS who can restore all of the Broken lives and comfort their pain and give them peace and rest.

And you asked a question "" if if they would go back and do it again for a bunch of people who didn't appreciate it whoreally didn't care about them ?"" we have to look at it that's the way they did to Jesus , his own people were screaming at the bottom of the Cross ""crucify Him crucify Him crucify Him crucify him and he willingly layed down his life. And asked the FATHER forgive them for they know not what they do! NOW THAT'S a LOVE ..that I don't think any human being can comprehend. Although my ONLY son is military & two daughters as well I could never willingly carry a child knowing beforehand that that child would be sacrificed I can't even fathom it😭😭😭 so that was a very very deep song 💔it made my heart very sad for this man. I hope he's healed & I 🙏🏻he gets to know God& know that God loves him regardless of what happened. It's important to be anti war at your core. For all that suffer weather you are a libertarian like me or a conservative like most of my friends or a rational liberal like two of my closest buddies. We can all agree that war is a last result in all situations and we should remain out of international conflict as much as possible and defend our country...

War is not a necessary thing because anyone decent wants it or anything even. It's not even just a measure of self defense. War is necessary as a reactionary measure. Same reason guns are necessary. We have to stand for what is right, and not doing so makes us just as guilty as those who carry out atrocities. And atrocious their darkness is. That is putting it lightly. We have to be ready to fight more brutally if that is what it takes.

War ruins men. Killing another human puts hate, sorrow and sadness in your heart. And eventually you get numb to it. And it becomes second nature... And that's when it becomes a problem. When killing becomes second nature, you've lost your humanity... Maybe one day well get beyond it, but not anytime soon.

Gee I can tell either you have never served your country in the military, or you were one of those that sat on the bench during the whole game. Shame on you for ever thinking you could understand what the thinking of an honorable person goes through. PTSD is something our fighting military must live with, along with their families. It's a trial, that by step by step they work hard every day to be productive, loving and be in our community's. Never heard a War War 1 vet complain.... God bless our troops, for even God sent men to war.

Sure war ruins men and killing generates hate etc. I guess we should just hide and let governments of the world do whatever they want. We could have sat out WWII I mean why send our men to fight and kill nazis??? Humans will fight and die until there are no more humans. Sad but it’s true. I for one am absolutely proud of those men and women who gave up everything so you and I can bs online, not in German or Japanese but in English. They gave up everything so we could have it all

Funny tuning is. I always hear about freedom of speech from those who have Never been in combat! I was deployed several times watched my friends die and feel luck to have survived. I would gladly have given my life for god and country but I resent listening to cowards who could not be bothered to face our enemies. Yep I earned my freedom of speech and my brothers who died payed for yours but it really don’t give ya the right to voice it. Or bash me cause I went and you didn’t.

It's a great song. It's a hard song. It's a song that hurts me inside. As a Christian, I don't want us to be fighting for the wrong idea, or hurting people. I think our country is wrong sometimes, and we should be mindful of that. I trust Jesus, that's all I trust. He said turn the other cheek. We say, we need to stand up and fight. I believe we have to stand up and fight. But I think Jesus disagrees and that means I'm wrong. I get it, if WE don't fight evil, who will‽ Jesus said, turn the other cheek. I believe we have an obligation to protect and help those who are being attacked, or can't stand up for themselves. The strong have to step up and protect the weak. But, we have to be careful, that we don't overstep that, and think we are "the good" always fighting evil. Because when you think you are fighting evil, you can justify doing some horrible stuff. Proud American asking other Patriots to keep our government in check!

I LOVE THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. I learned as a child what America is. I accept our history the good the bad and the ugly. I know she's not perfect but when human beings with their sin nature are involved there is no perfection. I'll be 74 on June 9th, 2022. My oldest grandson served in the navy several years ago for five years. I've NEVER seen him in his uniform. Because of this I have to conclude that he doesn't love his country. He joined for reasons other than patriotism. This really hurts me. I'm grateful that he returned home safely. I pray that at sometime he'll realize how blessed he is to have been born in the United States of America. Like Lee Greenwood, I'm proud to be an American. Thank you for what you do to make people aware of our freedom in the US and our freedom in Christ. They both cost.

His song echos his pain. I just hope he understands like I finally did. It wasn’t our country or our flag that failed us, it’s our own society that is failing my fellow soldiers and myself. It’s hard not feeling guilty for certain actions you had no choice in taking when your own society creates false narratives. I love my country but it does seem more and more each day that my country favors lies over truth. I truly fear God has given our nation over to a contrite heart. If you any of you understand what that means then you know what comes next. God help us.

Don't forget when Jesus thrashed the money changers in the temple that changed his " father's house into a den of iniquity " . I always go to this verse in moments of unease when someone pushes me to the point where it's necessary to ..... express my disdain with their actions. I get a bit upset when people confuse ( love thy neighbor) with , let others walk all over you . If Jesus himself can thrash people with a Reed, than I can kick someone's ass for disrespecting my son or wife . Don't misunderstand what I'm attempting to convey here . I'm not condoning going around and harming others , but I am saying that when pressed or defending the weak or family , that you fight , and you fight as if you will die if you lose . Cause even if you lose , people will come to an understanding that you and yours are not to be victimized . God bless those who have fought for what they believed is freedom, whether we agree or disagree with the politics of war , those people put their lives on the line for us in their hearts and quite literally . Don't ever disrespect a vet . Know your enemy ! And know who you're enemy really is . It shure as hell is not someone who leaves their family to fight for us all .
