In this episode of the On the Trail, Driving Line travels to the remote desert wilderness of Big Bend National Park off road to take on the River Road Trail. This trail may not be the most technical Driving Line has conquered, but given just how remote and huge the park is, even a minor issue can become a big problem, meaning preparation is critical. That said, if you pack the right gear and go with some friends, you’ll be treated to gorgeous views of canyons, mountains and desert without anything to distract you.

Coming along on this scenic journey with host Matt Moghaddam are Driving Line Editor in Chief Kristin Cline and Nitto Pit Crew member Scott Willeford. The three of them brought a mix of off-road capable trucks and SUVs, with Matt bringing his Ford Ranger APG ProRunner on 35-inch Nitto Ridge Grapplers, Kristin bringing her Ford F150 4x4 on Nitto Terra Grappler G2s and Scott bringing his Jeep JLU on 37-inch Ridge Grapplers.
Big Bend National Park is not only impressive for the scenery you can experience there, but also for its shear scope. It’s is larger than the state of Rhode Island and is the only National Park that entirely encompasses a mountain range. Those mountains are tall, too. Emory Peak, the tallest mountain in the park, actually has an alpine forest on it with coniferous trees, which isn’t something people typically associate with Texas. From the Rio Grande to the mountains and slot canyons, there is so much to see and experience in your 4x4.

I've never seen a ranger look so badass. Didn't even think it was possible lol. Great vid. Love that part of Texas. I go out there every year. I once did river road to panther junction on my motorcycle in 6 hours. It was pure hell especially because I had my girl with me. We even did black gap. Again, awesome vid!

Definitely want to go explore this park! What's the best time or year? Bet it gets HOT down there. The lack of public land is Texas' dark secret. NEVADA has got Texas beat with 85% public land. #dontfencemein

Yes, add it to your list! Big Bend is a land of extremes - including weather. So Fall & Spring are your best times to visit. One handy note from the Ranger was that temperature can easily vary +/- 20 degrees from the mountain area being coolest, down to the low elevation by the Rio Grande being the hottest.

Big Bend Ranch State Park (just to the west of BBNP) has better / more remote trails.

Correct me if I'm wrong. Did you push a products name did they sponsor this video? I jus wanna know how edited and prefabricated these videos are and what's real. Is it the views? I'm not saying this video is fake but it was so handy that dude had a scanner tool with him. Maybe the lights were already on and they wanted to show how easy it is to use that tool.

No offense intended, but have been there many times and dont look at it as "escaping reality", but rather entering reallity. The world we live in is fake, but this isnt and I love it!

I have seen a lot of jeeps doing off road trails more than the trucks and suvs. I myself have a 2006 Nissan Titan 4x4 off road. What is up with these people getting jeeps?

The video was ok, Ranger is badazz but looks like it was too much for that River road. The way the Jeep driver was talking about the road I thought I was going to see a real skillful off-road video but it fell short of that. Maybe Big Bend isn’t a spot for finding a challenge in off-roading. I’m sure there’s plenty of views though.
