With the recent release of their new GP-3, GP-6, GP-9, and GP-9M grand pianos, Roland has introduced a new concept called Piano Reality. In this video, we’re going to take a detailed look at Piano Reality, break it down and go over each of its components, and explain how its implementation differs from the Standard tier to the Premium tier to the flagship Concert tier. We’ll do our best to make this discussion lay-friendly… so don’t worry if you’re not up on the latest digital piano tech.

Stunning indeed. Excellent coverage of the gp9 against its lower models. What app was being utilized in the earlier portions of the video as it doesn't look like the Roland piano app used at the end?

Thank you, lrt35! We appreciate the feedback! The app we used earlier in the video is Roland's free Piano Designer app. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this excellent review which in regard to explaining the technological underpinnings of the Piano Reality concept is, in my humble opinion, the best of all other reviews of the concept available on the internet. I have one specific query and wonder if you can help. In your video, 6'25" to 6'48" and 14'00" to 14'30" the Piano Reality Concert (PRC) Action (which as stated in the video is 'based on' the Grand Hybrid action found in the LX708 and the LX706) and the Piano Reality Premium (PRP) Action (based on the PHA 50 action found in the LX705) are discussed. My understanding is that the length of the keystick of the Grand Hybrid action in the LX708 (which I happen to have) is 10.25" and that the length of the keystick of the PHA 50 is 9.0". However, looking at c. 14'18" in the video it would appear that the PRC Concert keystick is c. 2.5" longer than the PRP keystick. Now assuming that the PRP keystick is exactly the same length as the keystick associated with PHA 50 action one is drawn to the conclusion that that the PRC action though based on the Grand Hybrid action has a keystick which is c. 2.5" longer (rather than just 1.25" longer) than the old PHA 50 action. Ergo though the PRC action is based on the old Grand Hybrid action, the keystick of the PRC action is itself also c. 1.25" longer than the keystick found in the LX708/706. Is that conclusion correct or have I missed something here? If the latter conclusion is correct would it also be plausible to assume that the distance to the pivot point of the PRC action is also longer than that found on the Grand Hybrid action of the LX708, hence providing the potential for greater control of dynamics to the player, especially on the ebony sharps? I hope these queries are clear - am happy to elucidate if not. Also happy to be informed that any or more of the assumptions I have made above are incorrect!

Hello and thank you for your kind words! Since we thought the Piano Reality concept was a bit confusing to someone who doesn't work with this equipment every day, we wanted to create a video that explained everything in simple detail. Glad it seemed to help! Now, on to your question: Your Roland LX708 uses the Grand Hybrid (or PHA-100) key action. The new GP-9 and 9M use the Piano Reality Concert key action. They are identical except for one major change: the sensors. The Piano Reality Concert key action features sensors that are 2.5 times faster to deliver greater nuance and control to the sound chip. The physical action geometry between Piano Reality Concert and Grand Hybrid (PHA-100) are the same. The same can be said for the PHA-50 key action and the Piano Reality Premium key action. You can get more information (if you would like more) from our blog: blog.rivertonpiano.com/2023/06/29/rolands-road-to-piano-reality/ As for the discrepancy in measuring the actual key lengths, remember that there are two pieces to the "piano key" in Roland actions - a top piece (made out of wood and resin) and a bottom piece that connects to the counterweight. Both play a role in delivering the leverage and control a player expects from the piano's key action. That said, I believe both halves of the Piano Reality Concert/PHA-100 keys are at least two inches longer than the Piano Reality Premium/PHA-50 keys. It's a noticeable difference. Thanks for a great question and best wishes!

As for specific key length measurements (now that I am in the store, I can measure), the PHA-100/PRC action is 10.5" (top piece) and 9" (bottom piece) giving it a total compound leverage length (ie "key length") of 19.5". The PHA-50/PRP action is 9" (top piece) and 6.5" (bottom piece) for a total compound leverage length (ie "key length") of 15.5". Thus, the PHA-100/PRC action has (in effect) a 4" longer key than the PHA-50/PRP action. Hope that helps!

Excellent overview. It seems these pianos carry over (and improve?) the latest Roland technology in LX708. Are the key action and sound generator identical? For a future video or an article, comparison of GP-9 and LX708 would be interesting.

Hi, Pavel, and thank you for your kind words. We're glad the video helped you! The GP-9 improves upon the LX708's PureAcoustic technology. You can find full details in this blog: blog.rivertonpiano.com/2023/06/29/rolands-road-to-piano-reality/ In short, the action hardware is similar, but features a massive sensor upgrade (the new sensors are 2.5 times faster). The new sound chip is built from a totally new (and higher resolution) model. The audio circuit is fully digital up to the final pre-speaker amps. The new pedal system is modeled instead of sampled... and - of course - it has a brand new sound system, cabinet and user interface. They're pretty similar, but the GP-9 definitely represents the "next generation" Roland technology. Hope that helps!

@@RivertonPianoCompany Sounds like good news / bad news. The good news is that the technology is always improving; the bad news is that the technology is always improving. That makes it difficult to "buy in" at any moment in time, since the current tech will soon be obsolete (the LX-708 was released in, what, September 2021?). If you're spending between $1,000 and $2,000 for a slab digital, it may not be that difficult to pull the trigger, but at the price point of an LX-708 or (even more so) a GP-9, well, it's quite a bit more of an issue, methinks...

I can understand your concerns, but I don't think I agree with you. Technology always moves forward. ...but you don't forego a new cell phone because you know it will eventually be replaced. You don't ride a bike because we'll all be driving electric cars someday. We deal with obsolescence every day. With Roland, you have the benefit of knowing that they don't come out with a new model every year or two. The LX708, for example, came out in 2019 (not 2023) and I have not yet heard anything about a new series of Roland uprights. That's four years. The GP607 and 609 came out over SIX years ago. From a technology standpoint, that's an extraordinarily long shelf life. In addition, Roland pianos are updateable. With firmware updates and new Bluetooth apps, the GP607 and 609 have been at the forefront of piano technology for every one of those seven years. In fact, they are still selling well right now - despite the new models! Finally, unless you are constantly comparing your Roland to the newest models, you'll enjoy decades of fun with your piano! You don't HAVE to upgrade every four - to - seven years when a new model comes out. It's just not that big of an issue.
