I show how to install an inline barrel cable adjuster. The adjuster I am using is made by Origin8, but there are similar types adjust made by other companies such as Jagwire, Shimano and SRAM. I install the adjust to fine tune the shift cable on my front derailleur. This is part of my DIY Cyclocross/Gravel Bike project.

Thanks for the video. One tip: when you were discussing the "two kinds of installation" with two types of ferrules, first option you showed (with a longer conical ferrule) is incorrect, since that was the brake (5mm) ferrule. So the option you choose in the end, with "cleaner looks", not only cleaner looking, but also correct since you used the 4 mm gear ferrules. And obviously you fitted the adjuster for the gears!

Can they also be used for brake cables? I have an MTB -> Gravel conversion with V-brakes and those break pads tend to wear extremely quickly. I cannot adjust the pads as I'd do it on the MTB break levers but I've to loosen the cable at the break cantilevers and fit them again in a different position. Being able to adjust them using such a cable adjuster would be such a relief!

I like your videos, very informative even for the first time diy'er. Systematic, pedagogic and very easy to understand. However, I do have a question. How many wires do you go through a year, cutting them every time? I just watched you install a new cable for this particular FD and here you go cutting it in half again. Why not just leave it a bit longer first time around, just in case you have to change something, and then just reinstall it? By the way, I hope you are sponsored by Park Tool. Thanks for the uploads!

random question. is there any benefit to have multiple adjusters on a single line? a bike i got had 2 in-line adjusters plus there is an adjuster on the brake itself. It was the rear brake line. that line had no exposed sections of cable as it was full length from lever all the way down the down-tube and rear stay to the disc brake. one of the in-line adjusters was near the head-tube, the other was about 2 inches from the calliper on the rear stay. and like i said the calliper had its own adjuster on it (Spyre TRP). to me it does not seem like it would be effective as the cable can only be tensioned so much but maybe it was just to be generous with the options as i could adjust the one on the head tube while i road.. and then unadjusted it after the ride and made the adjustment back on the calliper so the in-line adjusters where zeroed out again.

didnt think so. when i re-cable it i am just going to omit the one that was near the brake itself. i still like having the one by the headtube in the event i have some brake rubbing.. as disc brakes tend to be prone to.. i dont have to stop and mess with the one on the calliper. thanks for the reply and love the channel!

nice video! the question will be: what you are going to do if you don´t have STI´s just frame shifters? I see no possiblity to install barrel adjusters if you use frame shifters such as Shimano sT-6400 e.g.
@patwang84
@patwang84 9 жыл бұрын
ah sorry, i just got the solution to my question. frame shifters don´t neet a barrel adjuster, you can do the tension by the H/L screws on the front derail.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 9 жыл бұрын
patwang84 Adjusting the FD is a combination of using the H/L screws and cable tension. Generally you can get pretty close with the tension on the FD without adjusters. Adjusters just make it easier to fine tune it.
@emuhill
@emuhill 7 жыл бұрын
First of all the H/L screws have nothing to do with the tension of the cable. They are nothing more than limiting screws designed to limit the movement of the derailleur to prevent the chain from slipping off the highest and the lowest gear when properly set. Second of all, all cable housing should have a barrel adjuster installed in order to account for cable stretch by lengthening the cable housing. This ensures the proper cable tension during the life of the cable. All cables will stretch after installation little by little through out it's useful life. For any derailleur to work correctly especially, indexed ones, the proper cable tension is very important for proper operation of the derailleur.

Hey RJ, great Video as always. I have a question regarding the Barrel adjusters. I am also working on a mtb to gravelbike conversion (fun fact: the object is also a Trek Bike). When i installed cables and housings I experienced exactly this Problem of missing adjustment Options for the FD. I already ordered some Barrel adjusters for shifting cables. I See from the bike in the vid that it also has canti brakes installed. Since my trek had the adjustment screws on the brake levers itself I am now also lacking fine adjustment Options for the brakes. I found out that there are also Barrel adjusters for 5mm Housings (that should be compatible with brake cables I guess) but I have never seen them on any bike ever. Do you have experience with that Barrel adjusters for brake cables? Do they work the same way? How did you adjust the tension of the canti brakes on that bike (adjustment on the clamp?). Cheers Nico

Hi RJ, I have another question and hope you can help me out on this. My gravelbike conversion is almost finished (3x crankset). The only Thing that keeps me away from my success is that i cannot adjust the Front derailleur properly. I have a FD M563 which is top pull and which was mounted out of the box on my trek singletrack 950. I learned that the MTB and Roadbike FDs have different pull ratios. Since I use STIs I mounted the FD which fit to the STIs but the FD is down pull. With the roadbike FD I cannot get it to work at all. Do you have an idea what I can Do to solve this?

In this video, it appears that you did not lubricate the new shifter cable on installation. I know that with a stainless steel cable and/or a lined housing this is supposed to be unnecessary, but I think it is a good idea to lube the cable anyway. I use white lithium grease for this purpose, as well as all non-bearing applications on a bicycle where lubing is called for: seat post, stem, pedal threads, BB cups, skewers, etc.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 9 жыл бұрын
The cable housing is lined, so no lubrication is needed. Sheldon Brown says this: "Modern plastic-lined cables have made the use of grease inappropriate, because the viscosity of the grease makes for sluggish cable movement. This is a more critical concern with modern brake and gear systems that use weaker return springs, and with indexed shifting in general. Many manufacturers now recommend against using any lubrication on cables."

Does it matter which way round you fit the barrel adjuster? Also, should the cable ferrule be a snug fit? I’ve just replaced my gear cable and worn outers but the new cable came with plastic ferrules instead of metal ones. The adjuster now just swivels round without adjusting. Don’t know if the adjusters are really worn or not connecting to the cable outers properly. The adjusters work when not attached to the cable.
