I started making wooden flags and putting them on Etsy a couple years ago to fund my woodworking addiction, er hobby. I haven't made any in a while and wanted to get back to my roots. These flags are super forgiving because of their rustic nature. Blast a nail trough the front? No problem! Adds character. When scrap wood isn't readily available, stair treads are a great alternative because they're cheap ($12 in Tennessee) and easy to get (orange and blue stores). If you are interested in starting a similar business, or just want one of these sweet flags in your house, I hope this video was useful. Thanks for watching.

I'm fairly new into wood working, making everything from a to z and have made a few hand carved wavy flags and they all turned out amazing and sold one but Im quickly learning this is just like our lawn care/landscaping industry....its a race to the bottom! The 3 flags Ive made, I bet I have 5-7'ish hours into making each 13x24" flag, hand carving everything including the stars and asking 350.00 and it blows most people away. Unfortunately for me it's what I like doing the most.

Yep mine does that too. You aren’t doing anything wrong it’s just the one you got doesn’t work that way. They do make them that go upside down but they’re a little more expensive.

@RLLWoodworks
@RLLWoodworks Жыл бұрын
I don’t but it’s about 14” tall and 24” wide. The vertical piece has strips that are 3/4” apart so that holds the strips square and flush. I used a carpenter square and glue and brads and then once it was dry I drove in some screws to keep it sturdy. Been working great for a few years now!

Nice work! I really like the idea of using nails instead of scabs on the back. Do you ever have them warp after a while (months or longer) using the nail technique?
@RLLWoodworks
@RLLWoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I haven’t heard from anyone that they have but I usually do put a couple strips on the back. I didn’t film that part but they are thin, maybe a hair less than 1/4” so I’m not sure how much support they really provide.

Just a few pieces of wood that I glued and screwed at a perfect 90 and then some runners up the side to hold the pieces aligned while I nail them up.

Great job. I checked at Lowe's and 2 stair treads will cost me $53.94 + tax. What do you think about using 5/4 decking? Other than being PT.
@RLLWoodworks
@RLLWoodworks Жыл бұрын
Wow! Pain or oak? I think 5/4 decking it a great idea especially for the pieces that will get dye you’d hardly notice the PT.

Thanks! Etsy is kind of a race to the bottom so I have found that if you are just starting you basically need to be at a break even selling point and then when people see you have sales and stars they will be willing to pay more. Etsy isn’t great to make good money I’ll admit. Shipping is a killer too. I have definitely sold an item or two where I lost money when factoring in time.

I’m not exactly sure. This was the cheapest one they had a lowes a few years ago. It doesn’t have a lighter but has lasted a long time and is easy to dial in.
