In this video we look at how to use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup your photos and videos to an external hard drive. Our students have been using Carbon Copy Cloner for over a decade and we’ve never seen it fail. It continues to offer an exceptional solution to copy photos, videos, and documents from one hard drive to another.
The biggest advantage of using Carbon Copy Cloner over another backup utility is that it provides true cloning functionality. This means that when you run the backup process your “destination” drive is made to be identical to your “source” drive. This means that in the likely event of a future drive failure, you are simply able to rename your destination drive to be the same as the source drive and you’ll be back up and running.
Overall, a consistent backup workflow turns a disaster into a minor inconvenience.
Carbon Copy Cloner costs $39.99 and offers a free trial so you can make sure it’s compatible with your workflow before purchasing.

I’m photographier but not necessarily tech savvy, hence setting up my gear for backup where I must 100% rely on scares the sh** out of me. This video was so helpful, thanks very much 🙏🏻 for this highly valuable information.

Thank you for a great video as always! I've seen all four of the NAS videos too and they were super helpful in helping me set up my Synology NAS with Mac Studio with 10gb switch. I was wondering if CCC will backup my photo folder from the NAS (I keep one Photo Master Folder) as an automated process. Also, do you keep your backup disk offsite? Any thoughts on a automated cloud backup as an alternative so don't have to worry about physical drives, location etc? Grateful for any guidance. Thank you!

Just stumbled across your video. Love it. So I purchased CCC6. One thing I did not understand. Why should I choose the old Mac Journaled and not the new APFS when using none ssd? I got a 4TB macbookpro here and purchased an 8TB Intenso Memory with 5400 rpm, which will arrive today. I want to use it for a complete backup of the macbookpro. For me the backup does not need to be fast, just reliable. (SSD as external 8TB would have been to expensive also).

I just came upon this video and it’s a lifesaver, thank you! I have two 2TB external SSD drives, and want to use them to back up my pictures folder to two drives instead of just one (pictures folder to be backed up, 1st backup drive and then 2nd backup drive). How do you go about doing that with CCC?

Hi, I would not recommend to switch off the safety net function of carbon cloner because that safes you when you accidentally have deleted files. Without safety net they disappear on the backup, too. It is more likely that data is deleted by user error than by hardware failure. To protect the data from user errors you need the safety net. If only hardware failure is your concern, a Raid1 would be perhaps the more user friendly option. Cheers, Dietmar

Hello Forest. Very good tutorial!! One question - you said you keep all your Photos files on external drives. I understand then that your daily work disk is an external then? Is it slower than having the photos on the mac hard drive? Can you use that external drive then on different computers? I save all my work on the computer hard drive and backup to external drives. However, being able to work in Lightroom with different computers can be an unexpected great advantage. Is this possible?
@RMSPtv
@RMSPtv Жыл бұрын
If you are referring to Lightroom Classic, then yes. Storing the catalog and photos on an external hard drive allows you to plug that drive into any computer with Lightroom installed on it and have the ability to edit where you left off on the other computer. That is why I prefer an external hard drive workflow. As for speed, yes, it will be a bit slower however an SSD can help with that.

What is the downside of using ExFat? I left them this way and I do like to use these files on a PC also

Cloner is pretty good, but not quite a seamless clone: moving data from my former Thunderbolt 2 4TB G-Drive to my new Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) 4TB G-Drive, Lightroom Classic shows "File not Found" if I load on the new drive a photo orginally processed from the previous drive. I can, of course, then find the file on the new drive, but it is not "plug n play". (Nice thing about the G-Drive, though, is it was "clean" and did not need to be formatted.)
@RMSPtv
@RMSPtv Жыл бұрын
It should be plug n play so long as the new drive is named the exact same thing as the old one. If you use Windows the drives need to have the same name and the same letter.

Do source and destination drives have to be formatted the same? Or can you use apfs on one (an ssd) and hfs on the other (an older spinning hard drive)?

thats a good question. Did you ever find out?
@jehannebc
@jehannebc Жыл бұрын
@@sandrobiehl2601 They do not have to be formatted the same way. My ssd is apfs and it clones to two spinning backup drives formatted hfs. I emailed Bombich support with this question and they responded very quickly. It’s been working fine this way ever since then.

Can I copy multiple folders to the same drive? Let's say only Pictures and Documents.
@RMSPtv
@RMSPtv 26 күн бұрын
Yes, but you need to setup CCC a bit differently. There is a setting that asks CCC to simply backup a single folder instead of an entire drive.

Why not just use time machine backups that I have on an external drive? Or why not use Carbon copy and clone the entire internal drive where I store my photos?
@RMSPtv
@RMSPtv Жыл бұрын
That works fine too! Cloning the entire internal hard drive is a valid technique, it can just make it harder to recover just your images if that’s what you’re after. Watch my backing up overview video to learn more.

Great Video. What happens when you change the name of a file on the maindrive. Will it also change on the backup or will it duplicate the file and you end up with two exactly same files but different names?
@Filtersloth
@Filtersloth 5 ай бұрын
I think that is bad advice about turning off the safety net. When you delete files from the original drive, CCC will move the files into the safety net folder on the duplicate drive… it doesnt just keep them in the folder they started in. It’s just a safety net in case you delete a folder that you didn’t mean to. When the duplicate drive starts to run out of space, THEN it will permanently delete files in the safety net folder to free up space.
