The hate's because it's another mediocre 80's movie that simply can't be remade to the satisfaction of people who think that mediocre 80's movies are as good as cinema ever got. The Critical Drinker is one of primary reasons that 80's nonsense and naked cash grabs are now considered the new golden age of film. It's nonsense but, then again, it's the Critical Drinker.
@TheShepdawg9

@Malt454 so you prefer cgi, poor chemistry, and the fact that authentic dialogue and creative writing take a back-seat to the overt push for diversity? The main actress literally came out and praised the diversity in film. An Asian man was shoved into the script for 20 seconds just to complete 'race bingo'. I'm surprised I didn't see an Eskimo at some point.

I did see it (in a theater!) and I had one big issue: in the original, Dalton IS a professional bouncer. It's why he is called in to help. He knows all the tricks of the trade. He's completely confident in how to deal with people in bars and de-escalate situations. In this movie? He's a professional MMA fighter. What does he know about being a bar bouncer? Why is he suddenly an expert in this? And you are correct about Conor MacGregor - he's presented as more of a joke than an actual threat. It undercuts his fight scenes later. I just love the original so much more.

Pretty much every Bouncer trains MMA. Plenty have fought pro or amateur too. Like that's usually an important criteria for bouncers.
@TwoMoon71
@TwoMoon71 2 ай бұрын
@@okay1775 Yeah, I get that. But Dalton was “nice….until it’s time to not be nice…” All Bouncers might be trained in MMA, but not all MMA fighters can be bouncers. They never hinted that the new Dalton had any insight into resolving a problem before it happened. Swayze’s Dalton did.
@Samuraith2077
@Samuraith2077 2 ай бұрын
@@okay1775 it's not about the fighting, there is a way to handle a situation in a bar, club and such that gets the issue removed from the establishment and handled outside or deescalated. I had family that used to work in those types of places. The portrayal of Dalton at least gave that presentation of how to handle things rather than just a fighter who's asked to keep things under control in a bar without knowing the ropes.
@okay1775
@okay1775 2 ай бұрын
@@Samuraith2077 Yeah and what happens when things go south? Obviously bouncers are there to de-escalate through talk mainly but you've still gotta be prepared. That's kinda why learning MMA is seen as a requirement. It gives you more tools so you can de-escalate situations efficiently.
@PhilW7670
@PhilW7670 2 ай бұрын
@@okay1775 You're missing the point entirely. No one is contesting the MMA training. What they're saying is that in the original film, Swayze's Dalton was a professional with years of experience in the bar industry. He wasn't just some homeless guy that was formerly a UFC fighter with an anger management issue. The fact that Gyllenhaal's Dalton was a former UFC fighter did not automatically make him a good choice for a bouncer. This movie missed on every level. It was so bad that it makes the original look like a masterpiece (which it definitely was not). The only scene worth watching was the first fight where beats the crap out of those guys then drives them to the hospital, which was kinda funny. However, Secondhand Lions did that concept much better with Robert Duval beating up the group of thugs and then taking them back to his house to tend to their wounds and give them some advice on being a good person.

I think this is what movies are really missing now, FUN. This was a fun movie that didn't take itself too seriously. If you boil it down it is basically the same movie as the original, but just different enough to remain interesting. Honestly one of the better movies I have seen in quite awhile. It captured the cheesy 80s action theme quite well.

The problem with Mcgregor's character was that he had no tangible connection to anyone in the film. Not even the main villain knew who he was. He was just there. His only connection was to an off-screen character, who you thought was going to be a bigger play, but ulyimately led to nothing.

See a lot of critics while reviewing this movie are calling the Road House from 1989 silly, as if that defends this new one. I never found it silly, everyone in it plays it straight, there are no over the top acting moments, you believe what you see is happening and you care for the characters. This version is the polar opposite. I didn't give a shit about the characters, they did nothing to make me want to. Gyllenhaal is the only one who tries in this and he is good, he holds the film together, but everyone else are two dimensional characters we have seen a hundred times before and when Conor McGregor turns up it becomes a parody.
