This movie is a masterpiece. I've recommended it to so many reactors, and no one watches it. Rarely anyone ever talks about it, either. It's beyond underrated, to a degree I can't fathom. I don't understand why people are so disinterested in this movie. Thank you for choosing to watch this instead of leaving it up to the masses.

My Grandfather was Irish. He came to live with us in his 80's. He mostly preferred to watch old movies on AMC and almost never watched or finished watching anything I tried to put on for him. One Saturday night before I went out with my friends, I put "Road to Perdition" on for him. My Mom told me later that not only did he actually finish the movie, he was riveted the whole time. I'm sure the fact that he was a young man during this era probably had a lot to do with it.

LOVE YOUR REACTION! This is a sad but an emotionally BEAUTIFUL & moody film with a great moving soundtrack and an incredible cast & performances. Told through the eyes of a son coming of age in an era during a lifestyle that is usually glamorized in movies, this harsh but warm naturalistic depiction of a father & son relationship is so powerfully sincere & honest. I've watched this several times and always ends wiping away tears. One of Hank's best films and maybe the amazing Paul Newman's last that doesn't get enough recognition.

Great choice. A very overlooked slow burner of a film. The story is originally from a graphic novel - written by Max Allan Collins, a prolific author of all manner of books, many of which are historical crime novels - like his series on Eliot Ness, and the Untouchable. This story is actually taken from the real-life gangster family of John Patrick Looney, and his son Connor. Many of the real locations exist today - look up "History & Architecture John Looney Legend Tour" - in Rock Island Illinois Max Allan Collins grew up, and he may still be there, just a few miles up the Mississippi River, from Rock Island, in Muscatine, Iowa. For some other Paul Newman films - Hombre is a great western, and another great, overlooked film - Absence of Malice.

Great pick. My favorite Tom Hanks movie and my favorite Paul Newman movie all in one. I've always seen it as if it is a passing on the baton of Mr. Everyman to a new generation. And it fittingly is passed by Hanks taking out Newman with a machine gun. Good on you for making this executive decision. Hopefully there will be more, as there are so many great movies that are not getting the attention they deserve. This one is a work of cinematic art, in the music and in the visuals that give you the impression you are at the Louvre when you are watching it. Be on the lookout for the painting "The Death of Marat. You will only get a quick glimpse before it goes off to the next scene. And yeah, Daniel Craig is the bad guy, But Jude Law is the Devil. Notice how the music becomes discordant whenever Jude Law shows up in a scene. Thomas Newman was once again robbed at the Academy Awards the year this one came out. Just finished listening to your commentary and I am heartened to hear you had the same impression. One thing though, It wasn't the ocean. It was the Michigan coast side of Lake Michigan a little north of Indiana. I don't know where they actually filmed it but it looks like it does around the Grand Haven / Holland area.

Tom Hanks was asked in an interview what films he is proud of, which is inexplicably unpopular. He said 'Road toPerdition' is the one nobody even remembers he was in. He said part of it is that so few people ever saw it. He, like you, also thought the acting, the story, and the direction and filming was just about perfect. It is also a tribute to Hanks's range as an actor. Just think about it for a moment; the same guy stared in 'Road to Perdition' and 'Forest Gump'.

It’s always great to find a similar depth of love for a film. This one is consistently among my top-10 of all time. Every aspect of it seems perfect. I seldom buy soundtracks, but I bought this one, and quickly followed it with a couple others by Thomas Newman. I hope you’ll continue with Paul Newman. Here’s my three biggest recommendations: The Verdict (1982) great courtroom drama by Sidney Lumet. Nobody’s Fool (1994) a great adaptation of Richard Russo’s novel. The Hudsucker Proxy (1994) a rare comedy role, and it’s the Coen brothers.

One of the greatest films ever, I like that you also view it the same. Keep watching great films. A few great films which you haven't reacted to that you should definately watch are Taxi Driver (1976), No Country For Old Men (2007), Casino (1995), L.A Confidential (1997) and Se7en (1995).

I love this movie, my favorite Tom Hanks role. Iremember Paul Newman from the 60's. Cool Hand Luke is a great movie.

I went into this with a similar attitude to the one I had when I first viewed Empire of the Sun. They both had such little fanfare that I expected very little and both times I felt my heart soar.

hey Madison, love this movie!!!!! Tom Hanks was excellent, my only complaint is , they were headed to the north shore of lake Michigan and there are no bluffs even close to those!! being from Chicago, that always bugged me, loved your reaction and ill see you at the next movie!!

This depressed me for weeks after, so now how you feel! Need to watch Tom Hanks in Nothing in Common a comedy, drama, my favorite of Tom Hanks, a son with Sr parents etting divorced, both need him, his job needs him, and his former girlfriend around as his best friend. You'll really like it. As beautiful as ever 💕

Maybe the best movie of the 2000's so far. Glad it got shuffled to the top of the Madison deck.
