In this video I explain what kind of student benefits you can use while studying in Finland. I also tell you what you need to do before you can use these benefits, and where you can find most of the befits and discounts.
University students in Finland enjoy some of the most extensive student benefits in the world. These benefits are mostly divided into two categories: student exclusive services and student priced products and services. Student exclusive services like student apartments and student health care are a must-use for any student as they can potentially save you thousands of euros in costs. In addition, there are a myriad of companies that offer student discounts from their products. Using these discounts smartly can also save you a lot of money in the long term.

Hi Oliver! Thank you for the video, it was very informative and useful :) I'm moving to Finland in a few weeks, to start my bachelor at Aalto in Computational Engineering. I'm an EU student, and I have made an appointment to register my residence, but I am still confused on whether I can apply for the student card right away or do I have to wait until the immigration process is over and I have a Finnish ID code... Do you have an answer for this?
@RoadtoFinnish

Oh perfect, I really hope the awesome summer weather holds so that you can enjoy it too after your arrival 👍 About your student card: you should be able to order a student card / start using the Frank app after you have enrolled to Aalto as an attending student AND when Frank has confirmed your student union membership from Aalto University Student Union (AYY). However, you can only start using the card (its going to be valid) only after the semester starts in September. So your registration of residence does not impact this, but rather its all about registering as an attending student at the uni.

@@SZ-jw9my Oh that's really cool! Actually, it would be super interesting to hear if you have anything that you are wondering about in terms of your studies or perhaps your future career that I could make a video about. Any questions or topics that youve been wondering about would be super valuable. Its sometimes a bit hard for me to figure out what kind of issues or questions you guys are struggling with and I write down every single question e.g. from the comments so that I can make videos about them in the future. I know from experience that there are a lot of things that especially international students have when studying and building their early careers here and my goal is to answer specific questions about these topics so that you can get everything out of your student experience.

Another amazing video Oliver!! I'll definitely keep in mind all the tips you gave in this video! A few questions: 1- Is there an unlimited plan for public transportation in Helsinki? If so, how much would it cost on average for a student? 2- I have family and friends in Italy and I was wondering what are a few options to visit other European Countries while studying in Finland? I was doing a little bit of research and I saw we can get a ferry to Tallinn for a reasonable price. Thanks again for the videos! They are helping me so much In preparing to come to Finland next year!
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 жыл бұрын
Hey João and thanks once again for being here and posting such interesting questions. These are all things that I would not understand to mention myself so its really good that you post them here. 1. The public transport ticket in the Helsinki metropolitan area has a few different options, but the one that most people go with is a season ticket. This means that you pay once for a certain period of time and after that you can use as much of the public transit system (metro, busses, trams, local trains) as you need. When buying a season ticket, the minimum time period is 2 weeks and the overall price depends on where inside the metropolitan area you live. As a student, you get a 40% discount on these tickets so that saves a ton of money. Also, the season ticket is extremely cheap compared to a single purchase ticket because they only work for 1,5 hours at a time after which you need to buy a new ticket. Season tickets are basically, as you said, unlimited. More information can be found here: www.hsl.fi/en/tickets/season-tickets?customerGroup=student 2. A ferry to Tallinn is a very good option if you want to continue with a train. Train tickets are usually cheapish if you buy them in time. Some countries also have student discounts for trains. However, I would recommend that unless you want to travel by train, you should consider flying. Its not the best option in terms of the climate, but you can often find very affordable plain tickets if you just reserve them in time. I recommend checking out the student discounted flights from ISIC: www.isic.fi/en/benefits/student-flights/ Also, do keep in mind that these flights ☝️ are not always the cheapest (because it doesnt take into account all different airlines), I would also keep an eye out for flights from Norwegian. Its a European airline that has some of the most affordable prices and the airplanes are also pretty nice. I've flown with them for the last few years almost exclusively inside Europe and it is highly recommended.

Hey Abdullah and thanks for the question. Unfortunately no, many of these benefits do not apply to vocational schools. Most of these apply to universities and universities of applied sciences. There are some exceptions to this but i just dont remember which also apply to vocational students.

Hi oliver thanks for all this informations you give us , I just want to ask you this benefits are also for international students who study in Finnish colleges?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Smail! Yes, these benefits absolutely apply to international students. However, do note that you need to have a student card and you need to be a member of your respective student union to benefit most of them. As an exception, you do not need a student card to utilise student apartments. To apply for a student apartment you simply need to be an active student at a Finnish university or university of applied science.

Hello again, I was wanting to know everything I can do to be more competitive to get into the bachelors of computational engineering or chemical engineering at Aalto university. Also, i've looked into the SAT scores required and ones that were admitted in but I cant find an average to work towards maybe you'd know more?
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 4 жыл бұрын
Hey man and thanks again for the good questions. Unfortunately I cant really help with the SAT's because while the minimum scores might stay the same year after year, the actual scores that one needs in order to be admitted vary. I think I might have mentioned this the last time, but the admissions are done with a competitive system so the higher the overall SAT score curve is each year, the higher the actual minimum scores are as well. However, I could try to look into this a bit further once the summer holidays are over (after July) and I could try and make a separate video talking about SAT's in this context. Ill be doing a lot of application related content in the fall anyways and this is a great theme for that time.

If an international student hv family with a child (below 3 years) in Finland, do they receive any cash or other benefits from the government????
@RoadtoFinnish
@RoadtoFinnish 2 жыл бұрын
This usually depends on the type of residence permit that you have. However, as a general rule of thumb, if you are in Finland on a temporary basis, you will not be eligible for any financial support from the government. You can read more about this and about all the exceptions from the website of the social insurance institution of Finland: www.kela.fi/web/en/from-other-countries-to-finland-quick-guide
