I’m new to the channel so please forgive the stupid question. Looking at the tangled line and rubber band at the muzzle of style gun, I am wondering why you secure the line to the spear the way you do. I got into spearfishing with a ferrule that slid freely along the spear. In the loaded position the ferrule was in front of the muzzle with the line attached. There was no line passing inside the muzzle and hence no tangles..?
@RobAllenSpearfishing
@RobAllenSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, with a normal drop tip a slide (ferrule) is what most use. With the drop barb, the line passes through the spear. The reason for this is to eliminate the need for a slide. The issue I have with slides is that they create drag. The amount of drag is significant. Also, our spears are not stainless so the slide will scratch up the plating and, more likely to jam at some time.

The longer you use the same shooting line the more often you get those tangles. It's seems almost impossible to get rid of all the twists. The spear with the hole for the line further away from the mech seems ok. What about the muzzle and the nobs for the line? Almost impossible to use with mono and dyneema is sometimes tricky too.. making those tiny bits a bit bigger could help... but i guess not too big so that they break easyly.
@RobAllenSpearfishing

All the testing we have done show mono to be more likely to snag. This roller is best with Dyneema and, even better with the hole ahead of the notches like this.

Are you ever going to build a reverse trigger mechanism? I used to really like my Rob Allen guns but I’ve ended up replacing all of them with smaller, more compact guns with reverse trigger mechs, pretty much everyone I know who used to use RA guns has done the same. Any possible updates in the future...?
@RobAllenSpearfishing
@RobAllenSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Broseidon, I hear you but..... I still battle to get my head around the whole concept. I still don't see the advantage. To me, if the average person sets up a non reverse gun, such that he or she can only just load it, then he or she would not be able to load a reverse mech gun rubbers onto the spear notch that is now that much further back. The only way to do this now would be to lengthen the rubbers. We are not the only manufacturer who think like this. In time we might make a reverse mech, but only because of customer demand, not because I think it's a good idea. One day I will make one and pool test the hell out of it and make a video to prove this 😂👍

@@RobAllenSpearfishing the advantage, to me at least, is really clear: I've got an RA70 that I used for poor viz and an RA90 for good viz. I've replaced both guns with a single 82cm Pathos gun. The Pathos is shorter (handle to spear tip) than the RA70 but has more band stretch than the RA90. It's a complete no brainer for me as I've now got a super compact gun that I can use in a huge variety of conditions. I appreciate that for big, blue water guns it might not be so important but for people using smaller guns, it really makes a considerable difference.
@DeepBlueSpirit2
@DeepBlueSpirit2 3 жыл бұрын
@@BR0SE1DON Hi brother, only one parameter is mentioned (further band stretch with inv trigger mech). Think also about type and dimensions of spear used, maybe band length itself (if you cut them a bit shorter you might get the same energy as with a inv trigger mech) and band type. Hope this helps. A standard mech is also more comfortable to load especially when stretching bands to max (which does not mean it's recommendable as it might affect accuracy).
@monstermun
@monstermun Жыл бұрын
@@DeepBlueSpirit2 Hey! I have the Carbon Roller 90, and I am quite fond of it, but have to agree with @BROSEIDON that it deserves a better trigger mechanism. Saying to "just use shorter bands" seems like a simple take, as if the length of the barrel of a gun doesn't matter. Also I've had a tough time getting used to aiming with it since you're not able to aim down the shaft because of the higher trigger mechanism. Considering either getting a meandros nitro r2 trigger mech that solves these issues or look for another speargun in the future.

Hello ROB I hope you doing well, im hesitating between the tuna 110 and tuna roller 90 and I was told that in terms of power and performance there is no difference so I’m wondering if you could explain to me Thank you
@RobAllenSpearfishing
@RobAllenSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
These are both very different guns but, you have been told correct, very similar in terms of performance. The max range of the non-roller is basically 5 x the barrel length, 5,5m (single wrap). The roller is 7 x the barrel length (double wrap) 6,3m. The range is slightly better with the roller but, a roller takes more time to rig and load. There are advantages and disadvantages for both. The roller is easier to maneuver as it is shorter but, less buoyant so it will sink without the spear in. Only the longer rollers are buoyant enough with the spear out. A roller also has a much smaller operating window in terms of set up to work well. It needs to be “tuned” more often, whereas with a non-roller, not as important.

Hi Tim, obviously 14mm will be less powerful than 16mm. This is why we match the 14mm rubber with a 7mm spear and the 16mm with the 7,5mm, heavier spear. For your info, the max power output from a 14mm rubber is around 45 kg and 60 kg from the 16mm.

Are you not going to do stainless shafts with sharkfin? To do sharkfin in middle for line. Probably it will help to solve overlap problem too.
@RobAllenSpearfishing
@RobAllenSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi SpearFisher, we do not make stainless spears because there is no spring steel stainless out there as strong as the high tensile spring steel wire we already use, that we know of. Regarding a fin 1/2 way up the spear, this can induce stress which can cause the spear to bend or break easily at that point.

What about using magnetic barb ? To insert magnetic element into barb . I think using additional elastic line is not robust it will cut by fish bones. And probably one of reason of overlap that dyneema is s little soft. Did try harder version? Very popular in blue colour.
@RobAllenSpearfishing
@RobAllenSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
Hi SpearFisher, Sorry, I think you miss understand the video. The dropbarb is normally held on by an O ring. Some find it difficult to use, so the 2 thin elastic was just there to apply enough tension until the gun is fired. The elastic breaks and the barb deploys. I f you watch the video we put up before about the dropbarb you will understand. Regarding the use of a magnet, first off, the barb is 316 stainless steel, totally non-magnetic. I'm not sure what you are refering to re soft Dyneema? Dyneema is the strongest fibre available. We have it made in a variety of thicknesses. We use double 1,8mm Dyneema on the bigger dropbarbs, this can handle 200kg of tension. This smaller barb has 2 x 1,5mm Dyneema. Both sides of the drop barb is set up such that it protects the Dyneema when shot through a fish. I have yet to hear of one cutting off in a fish. One customer shot and landed over 20 dogtooth using the same dropbarb with the same spear and Dyneema 1,8mm Dyneema line. The set up was still good to use after these fish.

@@RobAllenSpearfishing thank you for answer. I understood about o-ring and elastic line that keep barb. I meen this elastic line could cut by fish bones or by another reason so we need to take another shaft. About dyneema. I meant not weak or not enough kg. I meant may it's a little too flexible? I saw people use specially on roller speargun not flexible dyneema blue color. Sorry for por English.

@@RobAllenSpearfishing about magnetic. Probably you can press magnetic element in barb.
@RobAllenSpearfishing
@RobAllenSpearfishing 3 жыл бұрын
@@SpearFisherPitZ The elastic does not hold the barb to the spear when it is shot through the fish. The elastic breaks most times anyway. The Dyneema line is what holds the dropbarb to the spear, not the elastic. The elastic is only there to hold it in place until the trigger is pulled. The Dyneema toggle line is just the same as a cable or the Dyneema line that holds a sliptip onto a spear.
@SpearFisherPitZ
@SpearFisherPitZ 3 жыл бұрын
@@RobAllenSpearfishing thank you for explaining. I understand it. Barb is tied to shaft by dyneema. You use o-ring or elastic for keeping barb atached to shaft. So if o-ring or elastic breaks you need to take the next shaft. Right? I think it's not robust. Yes. With o-ring is simpler "captain. Please give me o-ring from plastic pack inside my bag or i forgot it? " )

Aloha, does this gun feel balanced in the water and does it float to surface with shaft out?
@RobAllenSpearfishing
@RobAllenSpearfishing 2 жыл бұрын
It depends on the length and set up. The 900 carbon and longer will float without the spear. With the aluminum, the 1000 and longer will float. The reel will add weight. This added weight will vary depending on the reel size and line. This is why we have started developing our Timberline guns with wooden side pods to add buoyancy. We can get a 700 with a thick spear and a big reel to float. We actually add lead to help with balance to make it just negative with the shaft in.
