CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Guthrie (Gilbert Martin) challenges Cunningham (Tim Roth) to a sword fight.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The 18th century Scottish legend of Robert Roy MacGregor comes to life in this stylish adaptation of the swashbuckling novel by Sir Walter Scott. Liam Neeson stars as the title character, a cattle drover and proud head of a Highlands clan who takes a one thousand pound loan from the royal Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) in order to make a profit on some livestock that will keep his struggling people alive through the coming winter. One of the Marquis' henchmen, wily expert swordsman Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth) learns of the loan from the nobleman's factor, Killearn (Brian Cox), and steals the money by murdering Rob Roy's best friend MacDonald (Eric Stoltz). Unable to repay the loan and unwilling to give up his land, Rob Roy becomes a fugitive, hunted by none other than Cunningham, who rapes Rob Roy's wife Mary (Jessica Lange). Scotch-British politics come to a boil over the Rob Roy affair, leading to an officially sanctioned showdown between the stoic farmer and Cunningham.

Indeed. The look on Guthrie's face at 0:50.....I see a combination of two things in that expression. Anger mixed with a bit of fear. He's both angry with Archibald, but the fear and realisation is creeping in: "I don't think I can beat this man. I've underestimated him, and now I'm in trouble."

From what I learned from fencing is that the taller man with a longer reach and with a longer and stronger blade who fights in a more aggressive manner can finish the fight in the first 10 seconds. A rapier can be knocked aside or broken by a heavier blade. The first one to attack aggressively wins more sabre matches. Point control and timing wins epee matches and foil is footwork and coordinated attack and defense, though nowadays it looks more like poking and hoping.

Tim Roth made me hate his character so much in this movie, that for years I didn't even like Paul Riser on the show "Mad About You" for no other reason than he looked like Tim Roth ^_^

The blue guy's rapier is not straight (particularly noticeable at 1:58) - is that supposed to be so or is that an oversight of the filming crew? Would a real one bend after a particularly hard blow exchange during the fight?
@aaronsmith3484

Rapiers and small swords were usually really rigid I think they have to use bendy flexible props for safety reasons like in modern fencing.
