Rob Zombie's The Munsters (2022) Review - Monster Madness

It’s time to get into the spirit of Halloween and Monster Madness or “Munster” Madness today. Every October, I like to do something a little different. This time I’ll be checking out some NEW horror and monster movies. And by NEW I mean, they just came out! This is exciting for me, because it gives me an excuse to watch brand new stuff, instead of always just going into my familiar rolodex, digging into classic horror and things from the past. Which I enjoy and will continue to do, but today’s pick is equally nostalgic as its a reboot of the classic 60s show by Rob Zombie, The Munsters!

One thing in any Munsters reboot that will always be hard to capture, is the chemistry between Al Lewis and Fred Gwynne. They had worked together before and knew how to play off each other. They are an unsung comedy team. I think it's possible to do again, but the original show was lightning in a bottle.

Every review of this film I have watched have all used the same word "Different", and in that way, everyone isn't wrong. I had my 70 year-old mother watch the film, and ironically, she described it as "watching 60s Batman", so the movie does succeed in having viberant colors (another thing every review online seems to agree with).

There was also the 2012 movie called "Mockingbird Lane" which was technically The Munsters as the character names were the same about The Munster family moving into 1313 Mockingbird Lane. The movie starred Jerry O'Connell as Herman, Eddie Izzard as Grandpa. Despite the pilot getting really high reviews, it was immediately canceled after the pilot aired. The movie was going for a modern darker and edgier horror/comedy

Elsa’s last name was Lanchester, not Lancaster. Trivia: While Bud Westmore received credit for the original show’s makeup, it was Jack Kevan who actually applied Fred Gwynne’s “Herman” makeup. Kevan also applied Glenn Strange’s makeup in 1948’s “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.”

Glenn Strange was second only to Karloff I think. He had the perfect look. Lugosi was the worst. His face was wrong for the monster

I watched this movie because of this review. I was pleasantly surprised as new films don't catch me very much. I loved the nostalgia and think it was smartly played out. A bit long at the end but fantastic in many ways. Thanks.

I enjoyed this movie. It was like a 2 hour haunted house. It was nothing but fun. I loved the visuals, the look, the set decoration, and the character make up (Orlock rocked!). This movie was not meant to be some deep plot or character study. I believe that it was meant to be a fun Halloween season movie featuring classic monster movie make ups.

I think Rob Zombie was going for a Disney-like, kid friendly, Halloween movie. Family friendly is where the money is after all. Im sure a goal of his was to introduce the iconic Munster's characters to Gen Z. It's definitely not targeted towards adults. The target age demographic is likely 7-12. 💯

The biggest difference between the Addams and the Munsters is that the Munsters are completely oblivious to the fact that they are an unusual family and are legitimately baffled by people's reactions to them, often to the point that they misattribute it to something else other than their appearance. The Addams, on the other hand, are completely aware of how strange they are; they just don't care what people think of them!
@Rocket1377
@Rocket1377 Жыл бұрын
Not exactly. The Addams Family do not think that their own behaviour is strange either (they think everyone else are the weird ones), but they are at least aware that other people find them frightening. Whereas the Monsters are completely baffled when people scream and run away from them.

To further discussion, I think I tend to enjoy the Munsters more-so than the Adams Family. It’s a little more accessible, and a scoshe less macabre. The Adams Family always seemed a little darker, or cut a little deeper with their jokes. Just personal preference, but I do love me some Raul Julia.

I liked it. Rob Zombie’s passion for the show came through, and I really liked the look of it. I wasn’t expecting a laugh a minute or any kind of comedic genius. But it managed to make me laugh a few times. The corny jokes seemed perfectly in keeping with the tone of the show. Overall, not bad!

Gotta say Ice-cream and beer is going to be highly dependent on the type of beer and ice-cream; but probably best served as a float rather than mixed like a milkshake. Let’s start with the ice-cream: vanilla is likely the best choice, but a solid chocolate could work too for a darker beer. I’d be hard pressed to go for anything fruity unless we’re dealing with an already fruity beer, and probably something on the lighter side. As far as the beer itself goes, man we’ve got a lot of work here. Simplest and most straight-forward would be a Stout. In fact I’ve tried a few ice-creams that are themselves stout flavored. This is going to be your most versatile beer pairing as outside of a fruity ice-cream paired with the wrong stout, you probably can’t go wrong. Paired carefully the right stout could go with even a fruity ice-cream. Alternatively we can dig through some of those thicker beers like a Double Bock, which I’d personally limit more to vanilla, but could be swayed chocolate for a pairing. Now if we’re hitting some of those lighter beers like a fruity ale you can probably swing vanilla or some fruity ice-cream; but you’re going to want to avoid chocolate for those. Now I would warn your to stay away from any Domestics, especially Pilsners, especially especially anything Lite; but if you’re drinking that…you’ve got a whole host of other problems to deal with before we talk about pairing beer with Ice-cream.
