Damn! Your clear explanation and practical demonstration fixed my weak kick doubles *immediately*! I mean, I didn't even need the exercises, your explanation was so clear. Now my kick's dotted eighths are crystal clear at 160bpm! That was my struggle point. Totally fixed, first time! I will be incorporating these exercises into my daily practice for sure. Next, I need practice to sustain this clarity for the length of a song. Thanks Rob!

Lots of great players and teachers on the internet, but Rob Brown is the most practical, clear, and concise instructor. All that plus his laid back vibe, killer chops, great drum tones, and confident but relatable communication style, really makes learning comfortable, relatable, memorable, effective, and achievable. The varied grooves he covers are relevant, musical, and applicable to real-world playing, not just to practice. And the tips and techniques are valuable for all styles. His vids helped me recapture chops from my youth, as well as give me new knowledge and awareness to expand with. Thanks, man.

Man you've got some kinda telepathy, Rob! This morning I was just saying to myself "my doubles suck, I gotta figure out how to get more consistent!" Then BAM! Beatdown drops a video on the exact topic. Thanks a million! I'm gonna work this into my daily routine!

Dude! Dude!! Your Dudeness!!!! 😀Just got through playing only my kick (with a big pillow on top for some arm practice) for about an hour and your bit of wisdom really works for me!! Been struggling with doubles for too many years to admit, really since the beginning 40 odd years ago. A great guitarist kept telling me to play pop-pop faster on the kick drum (he didn't know drum terms, and neither did I yet), so what did I do instead? I got a mental block which has remained for too damn long, and you broke through it for me...thank you!! Feels good to be able to finally do it, and of course with practice it will get even better, especially at faster tempos. Pretty much got slower and mid-tempos down tonight. Strange thing, other than that little quirk, people have always bragged on the way I play the kick. Glad to have another lick to add to my arsenal thanks to your teaching. 😎 Take care and appreciate the teaching.

I love this, as always the clear systematic approach is super good. I love how it also doubles as a good bass drum/hi-hat co-ordination exercise. Plus, it works really well for me because I've been playing doubles the other way around and this is prioritizing the weak part of the motion for me. It's killer.

Great exercises! I've been playing an exercise (Don't remember where I picked it up from) that is essentially all of those exercises back to back without much groove or feel at all. It has helped me with my footwork but can get really tedious pretty quickly. I fall into this mindset of treating drills/exercises as something I just execute robotically that aren't supposed to be interesting and it saps the fun out of playing sometimes. I need to start being less like a robot when I practice and really start putting more musical feel to exercises. You make practice routines that look otherwise boring on paper sound alive and groovy. You, Sir, are an outstanding drummer and musician. Thank you for sharing your drumming wisdom!

Thanks for the video man! Metal drummer approved :) What I noticed from a lot of my students that love metal and want to get nice fast doubles, is that they're taught things like heel toe or slide techniques. Where problems arise is if you go to a buddies house and they have a different pedals/setup, you'll try to use the same muscle memory and it might not work. All of those types of techniques you have to work to find the sweet spot on the pedal, and heel toe is difficult to get down on a random pedal. It can be VERY discouraging when the heel toe or other techniques don't work when you try em elsewhere in front of your buddies. I have had some students tell me about how this discouraged them a bit. This video is going to help me explain this type of a technique better! I been doing it for awhile and wasn't sure how to explain it. Love the visual references you added. This tap/push technique just simply works, and I usually opt for this type of double first when I'm on an unfamiliar pedal set. The tap/push method also INCREDIBLE for getting a nice light tap then an accented push. I use it for when I am doing jazzy things or if I have a more open bass drum.

When I saw the title, I was going to post what has helped me and it was the first exercise you showed putting the 'tap' on the down beat. I used to have a completely different motion for playing '1 e' doubles and used the slide for 'a 1' doubles, but since switching to using the same slide motion for everything I love it so much more. To get comfortable with it I really over exaggerated the motion by pulling my foot down the pedal as far as I could (while still getting a stroke) to get used to moving my foot backwards while my hands played the down beat. Getting used to the reverse motion of the foot and hands helps so much with being able to put kick doubles on any beat without feeling off balance. Same with triplets, play an shuffle with hands and feet offset so that the '1' lines up. The '1' on the foot is a 'tap'. H: 1 _ a F: 1 e _ Great exercise to help get the foot swingin'. 😎

Thank you Rob for your explanation. But what happens with the hi hat when you play swing and do doubles at the same time on the bass drum? How can you correct stability when both feet are in the air at the same time? That is, you play 2 and 4 or the "and" on the hi hat and play doubles on the bass drum at the same time in different positions.
