Samadhi (peace) comes when we transcend the tension of opposites and, as some of the audience suggested, give birth to an androgynous synthesis of m/f within. In that way male and female can come together as true equals, not needed the other to fulfill the role of protector/nurturer etc. I think Robert was right on the cusp of seeing this happen. Wonderful lecture that feels incredibly relevant to our current time.

@@mcxo2774 I was taught that samadhi comes through grace when all the conditions are right. The best we can do is practice and try to cultivate the right conditions. Any striving toward samadhi only takes us further from it. Peace!

@@howlinthewilderness yes, I agree that resolution evolves through the Integration of our opposites, m/f which includes Shadow work. (And possibly much more.) As an aside, most seem to forget that we are created by a woman and a man. Therefore, GENETICS play a significant role in our identity.

“Give birth to an androgynous synthesis?” In the yin yang symbol the white and black colors are each individually identifiable but together comprise the total. Separate yet together. Is this what you mean?

Thanks so much for posting this. I recorded this talk from the radio on two audio cassettes around forty years ago, but over time lost one of the cassettes, so only had half the story and discussion when the opportunity came to digitize it. This version and discussion is better than my original one.

Double anima is fully accepted in Southern India. Lord Vishnu had two wives, Bhudevi and Sridevi. Ganesha had two wives, Riddhi and Siddhi. Shiva had two wives Ganga and Gowri. Lord Muruga had two wives, Devyani and Valli. This is all done without preaching polygamy, with understanding that ONLY Gods can handle polygamy. I am yet to find a double anima story in west, but love triangles are quite common.

It occurred to me through the discussion at the end - how reluctant we are, personally and collectively, to give up both inner and outer images of m & f. That both inner and outer images (and maybe ego too) must die to the unknown before peace is restored and something new is created. I imagine an outer male body/mind would be very reluctant to give up his position of privilege both within and without. As too, I imagine it would be equally difficult for the animus to give up his position within the female body/mind. Why do we act out these m & f entanglements over and over? Great story and storytelling. Thanks for sharing.

Hi. When you said “dies to the unknown”, did you also mean “dies BY the unknown”?

What would the society, the individual become without male or female identity. Nature has assigned gender for a reason and it not solely for procreation. Our identities are directly interwoven into our never identity. Before race, color, culture, religion, morals, ... we are human male or female. That's my view

@endless2804 "Regarding your question: Why do we replay these M&F entanglements over and over again?" Beautiful story and narration. Thank you for sharing. We play it only once in our life, but we all experience it. In reality, the impression of replaying it simply comes from the fact that an individual is moving towards the union of opposites. If there is no encounter with the anima or animus, there is no encounter with the Self. Just as if there is no encounter with the Shadow, there is no encounter with the anima and animus. The amount of experience and human time make us think we replay it, but each person lives it once. I really enjoyed your comment and your very profound reflection, it is very interesting, and you have given me an idea for future exploration. Thank you. (From France)

This is one of Johnson's most significant concepts; it is infrequently discussed, sadly.

I think the solution is some kind of surrender. It feels like death (and at times it can be.) It feels very horrible. Very Kali...

It does feel like death as we move through the tasks demanded of our respective gender. I have met 3 of 4 tasks demanded by Aphrodite, put upon Psyche. Johnson's book SHE speaks to these Tasks. I need help completing the first task, which is downsizing, in my personal life: sorting/tossing. I need to borrow a man's Anima. Do men have challenges to complete before moving into another level?

I would say that one has to live the process over and over again whenever one meets...a new "facit" of the Other. Whenever the ANIMUS or ANIMA is constellated. In practice, we first try everything we already KNOW...all of the things that have been tried before and have been handed down to us. But these things don't feel exactly right...and slowly one arrives at a point where one DOESN'T KNOW...and what does one DO, then? WHAT doesn't one know? One doesn't know what it MEANS. One must ASK "WHAT does this (particular, very singular, detailed, unique [yet recurring] ) SITUATION mean? The ACT of ASKING results in INSIGHT...that has all of the properties of the ...irritating, painful, upsetting, insoluble, infuriating.....Crucifixion , yet Rise Again...in NEW FORM...Redeemed.

These are great videos but they are too long. Who can concentrate and pay attention and get benefit from an 1:30 minute speech? It's too long. Higher recommend breaking these up into more digestible chunks. You'll get more viewers, more likes, and people will benefit more from these excellent Jungian materials.
