Just finished watching this movie De Niro did great in this, the guy was wacko off the wall. De Niro deserved a Oscar for this performance.

Such a sad movie... People think it's about a psychopathic fan terrorising his idol, abducting his son. But I think... It's a movie about a broken man, who didn't know anything else but violence and frustration, trying to find solace in his only passion, but breaking down further once he is rejected even by his idol. Gil Renard is a slighly more grounded in reality version of William 'D-Fens' Foster from Falling Down. Both men rejected by society, painted as evil and unstable, without anything to turn to, lost their jobs, outcasts, ostracised, turned to violence, lost their morality, and ultimately lost their lives, without ever rekindling with the people they loved the most - their children.

At that point, he had a restraining order, he wasn't allowed to do so. In the movie, he had already left his son alone in the stadium. The movie doesn't do a good job at depicting what happened afterwards. Imagine a little boy alone in the stadium at a baseball game and the dad not coming back! Scary! The older lady took him home (my guess) and then the police was notified. Pretty serious business, as he put his son in danger. If Gil would have called the cops,, DeNiro's character would have been arrested.
