I started reading this series from its beginning in 1990. I could hardly wait till the next installment came out. His style reminded me of J R R Tolkien because his writing transports to the world of the Dragon and company. I love books you where you find yourself giving voices to the characters and you see the scenes in your mind. It's so vivid you forget your reading a book. When he died I was sad because we had lost a talented story teller with a beautiful imagination. The wheel weaves as the wheel will, and I'm sure we'll meet again in another age perhaps.

@ALLTHEPEOPLEARGUEINGONTHISVIDEO Who cares if his own views were put into his novel's or if he supported something that every other fantasy epic novelist was against. Robert Jordan was and is a master Artist who the likes have never been seen. He is the modern Tolkein, yes, but he surpassed Tolkein's work, with his vastly complex yet easy to read and understand world. I have also read the backstory of LOTR, Gil-galad's kngdom, Numenor, Beleriand, Feanor, the Silmarils, Thangorodrim, etc. I consider the Silmarillion to be a magnificent piece of literature. But when I tried reading it right after LOTR, I got bored and stopped. When I picked it up again ten years later, I found it deeply moving, because I believe it resonates better with adults as a more tragic and darker work, although thankfully it still ends with a triumphant victory over evil.

Robert Jordan is one of the beloved legends of fantasy literature, he's shaped my writing, and he's done so much..and I've always been quick to defend him from any criticism...however I have to say when I compare the Wheel of Time to say Song of Ice and Fire it pains me that the latter is probably better..and it's simply because after book 5 WoT meandered through pointless plotlines with minor characters, it became descriptively dragged and weary to read...Brandon Sanderson brought it back.

Actually I think it is a very uplifting story. Sure it is dark but Beren and Luthien live out their mortal life in happiness and depart beyond the circles of the world when they die. I know GrimDark is all the rage right now with the success of A Game of Thrones but we should not attempt to fit Tolkien in with Martin because he had a very different philosophical outlook. His belief in the eucatastrophe, for instance, and the flowering of the Shire after the fall of Sauron.
