I’m argentinian, never thought that a song written by an english man about this war could move me this way. Costello’s lyrics are as poetic as they are powerful; and Robert Wyatt’s interpretation is so poignant, pure excellence. This song is a masterpiece.

I was introed to this great song by Suede. Hearing them sing it I thought it was an original song of theirs. I told my mum to listen to it, and she was the one who told me it was a cover. Colour me surprised at that.

Yes. Me too. Tears because I remember it all too clearly that b*tch Thatcher (she was only a grocer's daughter but... Boy, did she f*ck things up). It was just the beginning because, next was the miners. Then the printers and, in the meantime the motoring manufacturing industry. It was a bloody hard time for all us Ordinary People. Meanwhile, Mrs. Thatch is in Marks & Sparks drooling over cashmere cardi's saying: Ooh, all older women of my age should have the comfort of cashmere - as she is freezing the pensions for the nth year running! If you made it up, people would not buy it as it would be SO unrealistic but, there you have it. Thatcherism. Auf Wiedersehn, pet.

Gordon Morris , when David Bowie was asked in 1997 what song he wished he had written he replied “ the one that comes to mind immediately is Ship building. I think it’s one of the most beautiful songs written, stunning piece of work, makes me cry...just the opening bars, specifically the Robert Wyatt version- I think it’s just the most tragically beautiful song”

This song made me cry when it came out and still does. Growing up as a young man in Britain in the Thatcher years was brutal, things got really nasty and the Falklands thing was some kind of weird CIA style brainwashing exercise. I lament those poor people who died but they were just pawns and we know what followed, don't we. We are still on this awful nasty trajectory, where ordinary people are increasingly having to live further into hardship. The rich are laughing at us as they reset the Order. Please don't submit!

@@lightbulb8587 so true Sophie. Growing up in glasgow i saw the damage to peoples lives she inflicted unemployment, despair and no hope for families. We grew up with a single mum who had mental health issues and 3 kids to bring up. Thatcher gave us no chance to even help ourselves. And she hated the scots too. She knew the price of everything and the value of nothing. Greed was her only goal.
@Coneman33 жыл бұрын
The problem you are highlighting is technocratic neoliberalism. A symptom of this is demagogic populism. The answer is democratic pluralism. Or in simpler terms, we have been increasingly screwed by the rich from 80s onwards and our country has become less and less democratic and inequality has spiralled while wealth has increased. We have made great technological advances at he expense of cultural stagnation and regression. Political disconnect has left the poor and working class with little or no effective political representation. I don’t vote anymore, nothing worth voting for imo.
@Havencheese3 жыл бұрын
That's the thing, it takes forever to rebuild others misdemeanours in your mind. It's hard, you just have to carry on and give back in your own way to those around you rather than rely upon politicians but if you can, you will in spite of them and you'll be richer. Sounds whimsical but it keeps me sane. Fuck em!

@stephenhall3515 Жыл бұрын
Costello wrote this for Wyatt's voice but here Robert Wyatt takes it a shade too fast and there are better versions by him. Overall, though, Costello himself makes more of it in many videos with the 1922 performance in Poznan having a special chillingness which was 'baked into' the song in 1983. A masterpiece by any standards.

@seamothboy Жыл бұрын
I started listening halfway through an interview with Elvis (I think) on the radio. I may have got the wrong end of the stick, but they were talking about that solo. I'm a big Chet fan, I think he was a fantastic musician, but he was very much an "ear player" - no understanding of theory etc. but because he was so musical he could just play, and sing, beautiful solos. However, the chords for shipbuilding aren't very straightforward, and are a bit different to a lot of the jazz standards that he was used to and he just couldn't get a good enough handle on them to record a decent solo. They had to construct one from fragments of different takes. It sounds an unlikely story, so I wonder if I got that wrong.

For perspective, whatever the 'oppresive Thatcher narrative' hold in parts of the UK for old industries, are not the experience of other less industrial, but no less deprived areas of the UK. Some areas and the country as a whole shook off the stale economics of the 1970s, like it or not like it. The Falklands? What would you have done?
