Hyenas have stringer bites than lions. Lets give them a decent chance of doing the same damage as a house cat. Captions with InShot: inshotshare.app

I would definitely watch that series. There are a lot of inconsistencies in the stat blocks for beasts that just don't make sense.

Realistic DND: unarmed humans die fighting against everything larger than a cat. Bears are the end bosses.

Keep that logic flowing!

@RobertHartleyGM - I'd like to expand on that. Hyenas are relatively small animals with correspondingly sized biting apparatus, thus a quick bite in a combat attack would do relatively little damage. The interesting thing is if it manages to bite someplace where it can latch on and do those classic canine jerks, tearing off much more flesh, while simultaneously getting its victim off balance, or latching on where it can completely grip on either side of a limb etc, which is when it could do the above and also begin the slower process of exerting maximum crush power, which might overcome the victim's bone strength, thus making that limb completely unusable.
@user-eu2fw4po2qАй бұрын
yes you should and call the series "ReRole"
@DrakeWurrumАй бұрын
If you do make it a whole series, maybe you could even release it as a book for fellow DMs to use in their campaigns.

Beasts are overall so underpowered. Wizards of the coast do have a thing for underpowering natural things (martial classes and beasts) overall magical. Many beasts should have cool abilities and proficiencies, but instead get the bare minimum. Look at the dinosaurs! At what world would an Ankylosaurus, a literal tank that nothing could harm it from above, have an AC of 15?!?! Not to mention, they haven't even fixed the DC's of such creatures! For example a triceratops charge DC is only 13, while it's supposed to be 17(8+3 from proficiency+6 from strength). Overall it's such a mess.

The problem with animals in DnD is that if you make them as dangerous as they are IRL they would be OP for low level adventurers, but too weak for mid to high level ones. Like, sure, a hyena could tear off your arm in one bite, but as soon as you can cast fireball they would die pretty easily lol, so it's hard to find a place for them. As someone else pointed out it would be fun to make a one shot with realistic animals someday

That's assuming a full force bite, when they chase they can only nip. When you are incapacitated, or snuck up upon, then the bite force would be greater

To be fair they don't have a very large mouth. 1d6 is the same as a short sword or one handed spear. Either of which could easily delete a person in real life or DnD.
@RobertHartleyGMАй бұрын
I'd far rather take my chances in an armored sword fight than against a hyena. Swords can't cut through metal and struggle with leather. Hyenas do not.
@chrisjones6002Ай бұрын
@RobertHartleyGM fair point but I wonder if a real hyena would bite metal armor. I'm sure they could crush it enough to cause some injures if they did.
@Freppey27 күн бұрын
Another reason why Hit Points probably shouldn't be treated as Meat Points. And why D&D 5e probably shouldn't be treated as a realistic battle simulator, there are better RPGs for that.
@askoldkeithsson845Ай бұрын
How many hyenas take down living animals, it seems right , maybe a bonus against prone or unconscious creatures would work
@RobertHartleyGMАй бұрын
I'm pretty sure Hyenas hunt very successfully. Would have to research it. And even of not, that should be reflected in a lower attack bonus, not a lower damage.
@OytheGreat2 күн бұрын
@@RobertHartleyGM Hyenas are smart pack animals that prefer an easy meal they can steal, but when they're forced to hunt they do indeed have a very high chance of success, around 75% in packs. Compare that to the 15% of a Siberian tiger...
