Just finished a campaign where one of the players got a broom of flying. Never realized how useful it was, especially since it requires no attunment.

i am just going to headcanon that the potions are so rare cos the stuff you need to make them has been hunted down hard cos people wanne fly

Basic economics, they are very rare because they are very inefficient, so nobody really produces them. :)

I mean it does make sense in a way..No one wants to brew flight potions because other options are more accessible

@@ChasmChaos yeah, it's a DnD tradition that some potions are made just to replicate the effect of spells, evem if the corresponding objects that allow you to obtain the same effect already exists

Maybe those in the very rare category and being consumable is what makes them very rare, as in they aren't easily crafted or NPC's or players are readily making them. Be it the materials are expensive, difficult to acquire, or success of making said consumable has a chance of even failure to produce. When faced with those obstacles who in one's right mind go through the effort to produce such an item when you've a mountain of better options.

I still smh when i think about how none of the d heads took the flying leaf or the flying rocking horse. The horse especially gets me because i really wanted to see bodger "riding" into battle on a flying wooden horse. Or bob using it to reposition and snipe.

Potion of flying grants you concentration free flight and hover without attunement. Getting knocked prone, dispel magic-ed, force moved off or losing concentration is a big risk of many flight items.

Can't knock me off my winged boots or make me lose concentration on them. They're just objectively better than the potion and yet two categories more common.

@@RobertHartleyGM But you still fall if your speed is reduced to 0 or are knocked prone. And at higher level that attunement requirement can represent a big opportunity cost. The potion serves a different purpose, that's why it's fine to be of different rarity.

A consumable being rare could possibly make sense since it doesn't take an attunement slot or time to prepare (I.e. you could whip a potion out in the middle of a fight if you need to)... But it sounds like there are other more common options that also don't require attunement 😅

I still can’t figure out the mechanism of a flying broom. Broom handles are only so thick. How do you keep your balance?? But yes, the rarity and time length is also pretty random.
