Good thing your Rolex is oil proof. Only the best mechanics work with a Rolex on. Also, pre-filling the oil filter canister is bunk. Not needed. Its a myth. The engine is not harmed at all. I dont taste new oil either. Lol. Its already been indentified.

I admire you for changing your own oil. I am eighty years old and still change the oil in my four cars. It’s fun and rewarding.

I spent about 2 years at Rolls Royce / Bentley in Crewe, UK, back in the 90's. I was part of the process that was getting the company profitable so it could be sold off to BMW and VW, but that's another story. One of the best parts of the job was hearing the stories from the Customer Service department.. So, they get a call from a woman who's car has broken down. Apparently, it was going along as usual, then suddenly seized up and stopped. Owner: "Well, I was driving along and the car just stopped! The engine won't do anything and I'm completely stranded" Service: "When you say stopped, do you mean nothing happens at all?" Owner: "Yes, it's seized up completely and wont do anything" Service " I'm very sorry to hear that Ma'am - A team of technicians is on their way, but could I ask, when was the oil last changed?" Owner: " Oil change?" Service: "Yes Ma'am, the oil in the engine - when was it last changed?" Owner: "Well, I don't know.... it had oil in it when i bought it" Service: "And when di you buy it?" Owner: "About 15 years ago." Service: Silence..... Honestly, you wouldn't believe how utterly off the chart superb the care and attention to detail was in those days. Crankshafts were polished by being tumbled in broken apricot kernel shells for a week... Happy days!

70,000 miles on it and it had as much replaced as a Toyota Camry with 470,000 miles... What a great machine ...

Just a thought. In Sweden we are never using a watch, never use trousers with rivets or a belt with metallic clip. We use a overall with hidden buttons so we never can scratch the car.

Great video. In my Phantom, I use a suction method to get out all the oil through the dipstick tube. Super quick, simple and no mess. I’ve cut open the oil filter and found that it has virtually -o- parts / contaminants / metal in it. I change the oil filter every 9,000 miles and change the oil every 3,000. Seems like a great way that saves tons of time.

I switched from using M1 for decades to the kirkland 5w-30 (Produced by Warren) about 100k miles ago. My 2006 Matrix has 207k miles and runs perfect with 5k OCI and OEM filter.

Great video. Had a 1962 SC II. Also had 2 Jaguar MK IX models (like the Silver clouds) Crankcase held 13 quarts of oil and was a real pain to change. Good memories.

Kirkland oil is made by warren. It’s not Mobil 1. Also you should probably check the manual on that rolls because I’m sure the Costco oil doesn’t meet the euro certifications. It’s an American spec as told by the GM Dexos 1 rating.

My guy…I wear fancy watches and do my own oil changes on my Bentley’s, too. Got a bunch of fancy cars and thinking of getting a Phantom. I am changing my own oil and keep suspension like new. Could I afford to have the dealer or shop do it? Sure I could. But…I want it done right, love doing it and don’t like getting ripped off. People are too afraid of these cars. My Bentley’s well they are basically a lot of VW/Audi. The Rolls Royce….well, its basically a lot of BMW. Your video just made my decision getting a Phantom probably over a Ghost.

Just another reason I won't own any BMW product (not counting the bad experience with their bikes). I bet that RR dealers don't actually use the drain plug at all, but do what Mercedes dealers do: they use a vacuum pump to drain every last bit of oil from above. Of course, MBs also have the oil filter in a housing on top of the engine so you never need to lift the car just for an oil change. Btw, my understanding is that Kirkland oil is made by Warren who also makes Amazon's oil and some of Canadian Tire's synthetic oils. Here in Canada Costco sells only Kirkland and Castrol Edge oils.

I am a big fan of the Japanese made, instal once and done, oil change valves that make the regular oil change plug bolts look primitive. It would certainly eliminate the mess video bob is complaining about, until he got to the filter. The valve is shaped so that a hose can be slipped on easily, which is usually superfluous, might be needed with this car. My car is very different , and has a lot of baffles in the oil pan, so I let it drain for 15 minutes. If I had bad oil seals, I would switch to a high milage oil , which has seal conditioners for that issue, because changing the viscosity on an engine with passages designed for a specific viscosity might not oil as well with thicker stuff, plus on my LS1 engine the oil also acts as a temperature carrier in areas where coolant vaporizes as it passes, and I really am not informed well enough to take critical systems outside of OEM specifications.

Regarding the mess when taking off the drain plug, I installed a drain plug valve on my car back when I did my own changes and it worked pretty well.

There’s something about seeing the size of that RR Phantom that just blows my mind everytime!

As someone that has worked on cars all my life, I agree with you that engineers who design cars aren't the ones that have to work on them. 🤬

It's always funny to me how the BMW/Audi Rolls/Bents are so much more reliable than the OG Bents/Rolls...The "real" Bent/Rolls were hilariously bad, even when they were new. Carb/CIS fuel systems and hydraulic everything. I hated changing the cam driven hydraulic pumps in the valley of the engines. Cool vid. Subscribed.

Hate to burst your bubble on Kirkland Signature oil but it is NOT Mobile One. It is made by Warren Oil who makes a number of private label oils.

Amen, brother... Another thing about doing your own maintenance (at least the minor things) is that it gives you a MUCH better idea of what's going on with the car. When you're under the car you can see all the minor leaks that may be too small ever to generate puddles on the garage floor. You can examine things like exhaust hangers for tightness and generally lubricate rubber items that might otherwise get neglected (yes, even by a dealership). I'm a Mercedes guy and have been doing my own maintenance for over 30 years; I KNOW the work is done correctly, and it certainly does save some money. Haven't had a Rolls in a long time, but I worked on the two I owned back in the day (didn't have two at once, just one at a time). Of course, they were simpler back then - no hydropneumatic suspension, just dampers and springs (leafs in the back on my Cloud) - and the parts were probably harder to find because RR only sold a few hundred cars in the USA per year. Keep the faith!

I saw the viscosity index (5W-30) of the engine oil, and of a full synthetic type. I remember that a multi-grade oil (mineral) had something like 20W-50 with an 'SF' specification, and was quite ok to use in general purpose applications. I currently use a semi-synthetic type with 10W-40 viscosity (2001 Toyota Camry). If the car uses oil, (smokes a little) I would be inclined to go one step greater in viscosity, say, 10W-40, and semi-synthetic, rather than putting an additive as 'thick as molasses' with the manufacturer's original specification oil. You would then at least know the actual viscosity of the fresh oil. With additives, I would experiment with fuel additives, which might well completely solve the smoke problem...

I like the bluepoint Allen socket, torx and e torx socket set. It’s pricy but to have all the tools I need for bmws and almost Volkswagen is indispensable.

I would never replace the sump plug while oil is still draining - that makes it a partial oil change, with the thickest sludge left behind. When the old oil is as thick and dirty as we saw it there, I would chase it out with some cheap fresh oil oil and let it drain completely before refilling it with the good stuff. That's just my own experience - it might not be for everyone!

What about fender covers? Shouldn't you want to protect the paint?

The VW buyout of Rolls-Royce Motors did not include the Rolls-Royce marque from Vickers. The BMW lawyers noticed that and bought the rights from Vickers thus starting Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. VW manufactured Rolls-Royce cars until BMW spun up manufacturing. It was only a few years ago that RRMC could sell merchandise since all merchandise rights was licensed to the Rolls-Royce Owners Club in the USA. And that happened when RRMC forced RROC to transfer to keep sponsorship for their yearly meets.

A trick I have used to prevent oil running down my arm (and to my armpit) is to wrap a towel around my wrist. The towel will catch any oil! Works perfectly!🙂

I use a Stahlbus Oil Drain Plug which is valved for my drain plug which has a tube with an adaptor which when installed it opens the valve so no mess, no over or under torquing the drain plug. Makes oil changing a breeze. Heck even my zero-turn lawn mower has a valve for changing oil which operates differently but less messy for sure. BTW 5/16" is the basically same as 8mm which is probably the size you should be using to remove the drain plug much like 19mm vs 3/4".

The cars that seemed easiest for the customer to work on were the Japanese cars at least in the early years. Manufacturers kept in mind the owner's convenience in maintaining it. Your German joke of torquing to "Gudenteit" (good 'n tight) reminds me of the time I was going to say that but then sneezed! My friend then said "Gazunheit"😂

Hey man, you are my oil change hero. I do the same thing almost every time I do an oil change. I always have oil spilled somewhere, where it’s not supposed to go. I was laughing saying “ that’s just like me” I’m not the only one who does that. Nothing goes always correct when you plan your oil change. Thanks. YOU THE MAN! Easy peasy Sold my Cornish for peanuts,everything was wrong with it,could not handle it anymore, wife called it the Rolls Canhardly; it rolled well downd the hill but could hardly make it up the next one; brakes were intermittent also, sometimes i needed both feet, had new sensors, computer,more sensors, injectors,pump, cats, intake gaskets, you name it, still could not pass state inspection first time,CO through the roof; a gimmick saved the day,but i was sick of it; now i went back to my V12 XJS Hess and Eisenhardt convertible, still runs like new, i just finished the oil filter housing gasket,that was the only oil leak,and a very serious one, the oil lands right on the red hot cat!! ; a monster of a job due to the exhausts, but the part is only 12 dollars;also very easy to cut it yourself.

Please use a torque wrench and metric Allen key bit sump plug can be trouble if over tighten

Tip from a Swedish hobby mechanic. You have these pet plastic 1,5l bottles? Cut off the top part of the bottle, tejp it on the allankey and it will work as oilcatch when you remove the plugg. Kind of an upsidedown funnel. No more oil an the arms.

I remember a friend of my father took his RR on a drive through the Serengeti and the transmission broke. RR made the repair without hesitation or customer cost saying Our transmissions never break. You won't hear that from BMW EVER. Sad to see an iconic vehicle reduced to what it has become. Sad. Just sad.

To make a part that is in a vulnerable spot that if broken could destroy the engine fairly quickly out of plastic is insane. To do it on a $200,000 car is actually an insult.

Old engine oil should be blackened, it shows that it is doing it's work & suspending particulates which then drain out.

I bought a plastic cover that goes to the plastic trash barrel, drilled like 20 holes on the cover and used it for my drain bucket and it stop the oil from going all over the drain bucket onto the floor.
